The Effect Of Individual Difference Variables, Learning Environment, And Cognitive Task On Statistical Learning Performance., Ernest Frank
The Effect Of Individual Difference Variables, Learning Environment, And Cognitive Task On Statistical Learning Performance., Ernest Frank
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The problem of this research was to determine the effect of six independent individual difference variables (cognitive control, learning style, achievement motivation, locus of control, learning environment, and cognitive task) on the dependent variable of learning performance. Post facto research was conducted that resulted in significant findings for two of the twelve research hypotheses postulated. Specifically, the mean performance score of field independent students was found to be significantly higher than that of field dependent students and the mean performance score of the web-based learning environment condition was found to be significantly higher than that of the traditional learning environment …
Attribution: A Political Psychology Perspective On The Democratic Peace., Edward Michael Goldcamp
Attribution: A Political Psychology Perspective On The Democratic Peace., Edward Michael Goldcamp
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Currently there appears to be irrefutable evidence of the existence of a democratic peace. The concept of pacific interaction between democratic nations has become a virtual law in the study of Political Science. Many explanations exist, generally following one of two tracts. There are both structural and normative explanations. The premise of this dissertation is that neither current set of explanations is adequate. Therefore, it is necessary to pursue a third type of explanatory theory. This study examines the role of culture and attribution in foreign policy. The notion of polity similarity is replaced with cultural similarity. I examine the …
An Examination Of The Multiple Domain Predictor Profiles Of Successful Exercise Behavior In A Health Resort Population., Cheryl Lynn Goldman
An Examination Of The Multiple Domain Predictor Profiles Of Successful Exercise Behavior In A Health Resort Population., Cheryl Lynn Goldman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The present study examined the multiple domain predictor profiles of successful exercise behavior in a health resort population. Successful exercise behavior is operationally defined as maintaining, or changing from a sedentary or somewhat sedentary lifestyle to, an engagement in physical activity at least three times a week for at least twenty minutes each bout (ACSM, 1983). Demographic information, physiological variables, health status and risk factors were assessed at baseline from a sample of repeat guests from a southwestern health and fitness resort. A number of independent variables from each of the three domains were assessed for their ability to predict …
The Usefulness Of Admission Data As A Predictor Of Completion Of An Associate Degree Nursing Program., Shelia Marie Kyle
The Usefulness Of Admission Data As A Predictor Of Completion Of An Associate Degree Nursing Program., Shelia Marie Kyle
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this descriptive study was to examine whether or not selected variables used in the admission process can predict and the extent to which they can predict whether or not the student will graduate from an associate degree nursing program. The independent variables for this study were: Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), number of courses completed prior to beginning the nursing program, the pre-admission Grade Point Average (GPA), the number of science courses completed pre-nursing, the number of courses repeated to earn a grade of C or better pre-nursing, and the number of hours transferred from other institutions of …
The Effects Of Social Support On Men's Exercise-Related Cardiovascular Reactivity., Daniel Benjamin Hollander
The Effects Of Social Support On Men's Exercise-Related Cardiovascular Reactivity., Daniel Benjamin Hollander
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A predictor of cardiovascular disease is increased heart rate and blood pressure reactivity to physical tasks. One psychological factor that is associated with a reduced cardiac (i.e., heart rate) and vascular (blood pressure) reactivity has been social support. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the effects of social support on exercise-related CV reactivity. It was hypothesized that participants would demonstrate lower CVR in the Partner Present condition than in the Alone condition and that level of intimacy would be related to CVR. Male participants (N = 32) who were in an enduring romantic relationship (i.e., minimum duration …
The Effects Of Fearful Responding Of Arithmetic Performance., Derek Richard Hopko
The Effects Of Fearful Responding Of Arithmetic Performance., Derek Richard Hopko
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Although anxiety-related responding and skill deficits have historically been associated with performance-based problems such as high mathematics anxiety, the relative contributions of these variables to substandard performance remains poorly understood. Utilizing a 7% carbon dioxide gas mixture to induce fear, the present study was designed to determine the impact of fear-related responding to cognitive task performance. Independent variables included anxiety group, gender, and gas condition. Dependent variables included behavioral, physiological, and self-report indices. A total of 64 university undergraduate students participated in the study. High and low math anxious individuals were randomly assigned to either a carbon dioxide or control …
The Development And Validation Of Science Learning Inventory (Sli): A Conceptual Change Framework., Mehdi Seyedmonir
The Development And Validation Of Science Learning Inventory (Sli): A Conceptual Change Framework., Mehdi Seyedmonir
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A multidimensional theoretical model, Conceptual Change Science Learning (CCSL), was developed based on Standard Model of Conceptual Change and Cognitive Reconstruction of Knowledge Model. The model addresses three main components of science learning, namely the learner's conceptual ecology, the message along with its social context, and the cognitive engagement. A learner's conceptual ecology is organized around three clusters, including epistemological beliefs, existing conceptions, and motivation. Learner's cognitive engagement is represented by a continuum from peripheral processing involving shallow cognitive engagement to central processing involving deep cognitive engagement. Through reciprocal, non-sequential interactions of such constructs, the learners' conceptual change is achieved. …
The Effects Of Supported Employment Level On The Psychosocial Experiences Of Integrated Workers With Mental Retardation., Jennifer L. Schwartz-Mitchell
The Effects Of Supported Employment Level On The Psychosocial Experiences Of Integrated Workers With Mental Retardation., Jennifer L. Schwartz-Mitchell
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Supported employment approaches may have a significant impact on the Psychosocial experiences of workers with mild and moderate mental retardation. The present study examined the influence of supported employment level (i.e., individual vs. group) on the depression, loneliness, and lifestyle satisfaction of employees participating in a vocational rehabilitation program. It was hypothesized that supported employment level differences would be reflected in the dependent variables of depression, loneliness, and lifestyle satisfaction reported by participants (N = 54). Additional predictions were made about relationships between these dependent variables and measures of social support and social skills. Supported employment level differences on depression, …

A Research Study To Determine Customer Service At Universities In The Dominican Republic, Thelma Roman
Theses
This study was conducted at Pontificia Universidad Catolica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM), to determine customer service at universities in the Dominican Republic. The sample population consisted of 250 undergraduate students and 16 academic and administrative head of departments. As results indicate, there is lack of evaluating mechanisms to determine customer satisfaction in all departments at PUCMM. The only evaluation in place is a survey done by students every semester to evaluate faculty' s performance and academic quality; nevertheless, such evaluation does not determine customer satisfaction. Furthermore, there are few evaluations to determine students' needs . On the other hand, according …
Perception Vs. Reality.. What Do Athletes Really Eat And Why?, John Kralles
Perception Vs. Reality.. What Do Athletes Really Eat And Why?, John Kralles
Theses
This study demonstrated an inconsistency between perception and reality concerning the diet of today's amateur athlete as well as the reasons why this disparity may occur. Here, a gap opens between perception and reality. A review of current literature and case study sets the stage for parameters of judgment. This study also exhibits the forms of misinformation that amateur athletes utilize to construct tainted views on their dietary endeavor. This study established that the perceptions of the amateur athletes studied concerning their diet are skewed and the causation is the effect of poor hand me down information, illegitimate press and …
Understanding Cyclic Behavior In Tourism Destinations: Analysis Of Theories And Concept For A New Strategic Management Model, Beverly Foster
Understanding Cyclic Behavior In Tourism Destinations: Analysis Of Theories And Concept For A New Strategic Management Model, Beverly Foster
Theses
The purpose of this study was to gather and analyze information on lifecycle theories that may provide tourist destinations with a better understanding on how to have more control over their long-term sustainability. An extensive literature review was conducted that resulted in identifying and analyzing four applicable models and theories. As a result of this analysis, the researcher concluded that these four theories and models do not independently nor collectively offer a single, comprehensive working model for destinations to use in evaluating and monitoring their strategy for long term success. To help bridge this gap and point the way toward …

OBJECTIVE: The authors report findings from a study of 5,092 community residents who constituted 90% of the elderly resident population of Cache County, Utah. METHOD: The 5,092 participants, who were 65 years old or older, were screened for dementia. Based on the results of this screen, 1,002 participants (329 with dementia and 673 without dementia) underwent comprehensive neuropsychiatric examinations and were rated on the Neuropsychiatric Inventory, a widely used method for ascertainment and classification of dementia-associated mental and behavioral disturbances. RESULTS: Of the 329 participants with dementia, 214 (65%) had Alzheimer’s disease, 62 (19%) had vascular dementia, and 53 (16%) …
Executives And Hedging: The Fragile Legal Foundation Of Incentive Compatibility, David M. Schizer
Executives And Hedging: The Fragile Legal Foundation Of Incentive Compatibility, David M. Schizer
Faculty Scholarship
Options are granted to executives to inspire better performance by tying pay to the employer's stock price. Yet this incentive rationale no longer holds if executives can use the derivatives market to simulate a sale of their options, a practice known as hedging. This Article evaluates the effectiveness of existing legal constraints on hedging by executives, including limits derived from contract, securities and tax law. Although investment bankers have been searching for ways around these constraints, the bottom line is that, at least for now, executives are unable to hedge option grants: While contractual limits are rare, the securities law …
Localism And Regionalism, Richard Briffault
Localism And Regionalism, Richard Briffault
Faculty Scholarship
Localism and regionalism are normally seen as contrasting, indeed conflicting, conceptions of metropolitan area governance. Localism in this context refers to the view that the existing system of a large number of relatively small governments wielding power over such critical matters as local land use regulation, local taxation, and the financing of local public services ought to be preserved. The meaning of regionalism is less clearly defined and proposals for regional governance vary widely, but most advocates of regionalism would shift some authority from local governments, restrict local autonomy, or, at the very least, constrain the ability of local governments …
Convergence And Its Critics: What Are The Preconditions To The Separation Of Ownership And Control?, John C. Coffee Jr.
Convergence And Its Critics: What Are The Preconditions To The Separation Of Ownership And Control?, John C. Coffee Jr.
Faculty Scholarship
Recent commentary has argued that deep and liquid securities markets and a dispersed shareholder base are unlikely to develop in civil law countries and transitional economies for a variety of reasons, including (1) the absence of adequate legal protections for minority shareholder, (2) the inability of dispersed shareholders to hold control or pay an equivalent control premium to that which a prospective controlling shareholder will pay and (3) the political vulnerability of dispersed shareholder ownership in left-leaning "social democracies." Nonetheless, this article finds that significant movement in the direction of dispersed ownership has occurred and is accelerating across Europe. To …

An advantage of the collegiate format is the potential to foster intellectual and ethical growth as well as professional pilot skills. Advances in flight training technology and proven methods of flight instruction serve to effectively train a diverse student pilot population who attend university flight programs and civilian flight academies. Flight training programs traditionally focus on repetitive learning structures and psychomotor skill mastery. Despite the cognitive growth structures in place on a college campus, flight students may experience …
General Aviation Landing Flare Instructions, Danny Benbassat, Charles J. Abramson
General Aviation Landing Flare Instructions, Danny Benbassat, Charles J. Abramson
Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research
The present paper discusses the ability to determine low altitudes and challenges the effectiveness of current general aviation landing flare instructions. Conclusions are based on literary review from a variety of sources such as general aviation flight instruction manuals, aviation literature, and scientific publications. Key findings suggest that current flare instructions are inconsistent, ambiguous, and of limited helpfulness to pilots wishing to learn how to determine altitude before initiating the landing flare.
After The "Social Meaning Turn": Implications For Research Design And Methods Of Proof In Contemporary Criminal Law Policy Analysis, Bernard E. Harcourt
After The "Social Meaning Turn": Implications For Research Design And Methods Of Proof In Contemporary Criminal Law Policy Analysis, Bernard E. Harcourt
Faculty Scholarship
The social norm movement in criminal justice has received a lot of attention in academic and public policy circles. This essay critically examines social norm writings and explores some of the implications for methods of proof and research design in the social sciences. In the process, the essay offers an alternative theoretical approach. This alternative focuses on the multiple ways in which the social meaning of practices (such as juvenile gun possession, gang membership, or disorderly conduct) and the social meaning of policing techniques (such as juvenile snitching policies, youth curfews, or order-maintenance policing) may shape us as contemporary subjects …
The Limits Of Behavioral Theories Of Law And Social Norms, Robert E. Scott
The Limits Of Behavioral Theories Of Law And Social Norms, Robert E. Scott
Faculty Scholarship
The law influences the behavior of its citizens in various ways. Well understood are the direct effects of legal rules. By imposing sanctions or granting subsidies, the law either expands or contracts the horizon of opportunities within which individuals can satisfy their preferences. In this way, society can give incentives for desirable behavior. The direct effects of legal rules on individual behavior have been a fruitful source of inquiry for analysts using the techniques of law and economics. Modeling the incentive effects of legal rules provides a useful predictive tool for positive theory and normative critique. Indeed, the tools of …
