Career And Family: A Qualitative Study Of Working Mothers, Barbara Crummer Lincoln Edd Jan 2000

Career And Family: A Qualitative Study Of Working Mothers, Barbara Crummer Lincoln Edd

Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation was to explore the lives of working mothers. The dramatic increase of mothers in the workforce in the past 40 years has led to an increasingly common lifestyle: women filling the roles of mother and professional concurrently. This dissertation used the personal narrative qualitative methodology to examine the lives of working mothers. Ten female graduates of the University of San Diego's Law School (JD), Business School (MBA) and Educational Administration Programs were interviewed by the researcher. These women have been in the workplace for an extended period of time, are currently raising at least one …

A Comparative Study Of Leadership Characteristics Of Principals In Charter Schools And Traditional Schools, Roger M. Mestinsek Edd

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the similarities and differences in preferred leadership qualities among a random sample of principals of traditional elementary schools in California, traditional elementary schools in Alberta, Canada, and selected charter schools in the United States. The intent of the research was to identify the preferred leadership practices of each study group to determine and report significant differences and similarities. Seventy-five principals were randomly selected, 25 from each of the three study groups, to complete the survey. Forty-two principals (56%) returned surveys. Of the surveys returned, 40 were usable for the study. The theoretical …

The End Of Innocence: Rethinking Noncombatancy In The Post-Kosovo Era, Charles J. Dunlap Jr. Jan 2000

The End Of Innocence: Rethinking Noncombatancy In The Post-Kosovo Era, Charles J. Dunlap Jr.

Faculty Scholarship

The protection of civilians and their property in war is an accepted norm of international law - even where the putatively "noncombatant" populace openly supports the immoral use of force by its military. NATO's Kosovo operation suggests, however, that the imposition of hardship on the sentient, adult "noncombatant" population through property loss can erode a society's appetite for malevolence. While civilians should not be targeted, a new paradigm for noncombatancy that allows the destruction of certain property currently protected by international law but not absolutely indispensable to civilian survival may well help shorten conflict and effect necessary societal change.

Ethical Issues In Dementia, Peter J. Whitehouse Jan 2000

Ethical Issues In Dementia, Peter J. Whitehouse

Faculty Scholarship

The growing number of individuals affected by dementia will intensify the ethical issues that emerge in clinical practice and research, issues early in disease relate to genetic testing, use of medications in mildly affected persons, and diagnostic disclosure. Research issues relate to appropriate informed consent processes, conflict of interests, and research design issues, such as the use of placebos and the use of biological tissues. In the later stages of disease concern about appropriate therapeutic goals and end-of-life care is appropriate.

Strategic Verbal Aggression: Attacking The Self-Concept To Enhance Motivation In The Classroom., Alan D. Heisel

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Numerous studies have identified a variety of negative consequences associated with the use of verbal aggression. This study examines the impact of verbal aggression in the instructional context as strategic verbal aggression. A self-report survey of 552 students enrolled in basic communication courses at West Virginia University was collected. Participants received measures reflecting the teacher's immediacy, competence, character, and perceived caring, as well as indices of the participants' argumentativeness, self-esteem, verbal aggressiveness, and Machiavellianism. Each Participant received a scenario reflecting either high/low intensity verbal aggression or high/low intensity no verbal aggression. Finally, participants were asked to evaluate the appropriateness, future …

Repeatability, Recency, And Response Recovery: An Experimental Analysis Of Resurgence., Gregory Alan Lieving Jan 2000

Repeatability, Recency, And Response Recovery: An Experimental Analysis Of Resurgence., Gregory Alan Lieving

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Four experiments were conducted to assess some of the variables controlling resurgence. The basic procedure involved three conditions: (1) reinforcement of key pecking, (2) reinforcement of treadle pressing, (3) the resurgence condition. In Experiment 1, the resurgence condition was conventional extinction. The extent to which resurgence is replicable was assessed by repeating the three conditions within subjects. Resurgence was demonstrated to be a repeatable effect. In Experiment 2, the effects of reinforcement recency were examined by manipulating the number of sessions (5 versus 30) of Condition 2, and the resurgence condition consisted of conventional extinction. Resurgence was not a function …

The Influence Of Context, Amount Of Experience, And Rater Characteristics On Temperament Ratings Of Toddlers., Melinda Maher Jan 2000

The Influence Of Context, Amount Of Experience, And Rater Characteristics On Temperament Ratings Of Toddlers., Melinda Maher

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Although temperament is generally defined as an individual’s stable behavioral style, comparisons of temperament ratings derived from different sources typically yield only low to moderate correlations. The present study investigated three potential influences on toddler temperament ratings: the context of the observation, the raters’ amount of experience with the child, and rater characteristics. Thirty toddlers (14 to 36 months old) were included in the study. For each toddler, temperament ratings were provided by his/her mother, father, two day care teachers, a home observer, and a day care observer. Toddler temperament was assessed using the TTS, EAS, and a global temperament …

Children Of Adam, Children Of God: Christian Nurture In Early Nineteenth-Century America, Margaret Bendroth Jan 2000

Children Of Adam, Children Of God: Christian Nurture In Early Nineteenth-Century America, Margaret Bendroth

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Contemporary attitudes toward children are, in many ways, social and theological products of the early nineteenth century. Like their Victorian predecessors, modern Americans sentimentalize and celebrate children, but they also entertain some fundamental doubts about their true nature. Indeed, recent anxieties about children, following a chain of bloody schoolyard shootings, have brought some old theological questions, raised in debate a century and a half ago, into sharp relief. While most American parents today do not worry whether their smiling babe is destined for an eternal lake of fire, the growing popularity of v-chips and parental-control software suggests an active suspicion …

Brothers In Arms: Case Studies Of Officer And Nco Integration In The New States Of The Federal Republic Of Germany., Charles Anson Steele Jan 2000

Brothers In Arms: Case Studies Of Officer And Nco Integration In The New States Of The Federal Republic Of Germany., Charles Anson Steele

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation seeks to describe the effects of Germany's recent unification upon the officers and NCOs of the former East German armed forces, the Nationalvolksarmee, and their counterparts in the Federal Republic's Bundeswehr. Specifically, the study attempts to demonstrate that the absorption of East German officers and NCOs occurred without introducing any element of unreliability to the Bundeswehr. Furthermore, the study seeks to demonstrate that the Bundeswehr was able to complete this portion of unification without compromising its standing either as a pillar of a democratic regime or as a bulwark of European security. In addressing the Bundeswehr's role in …

Attendance And Participation In The College Classroom: The Role Of The Instructor., Kelly A. Rocca Jan 2000

Attendance And Participation In The College Classroom: The Role Of The Instructor., Kelly A. Rocca

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study examined the attendance and participation behaviors of undergraduate students. Much of the existing literature had focused on student variables in determining attendance and participation in the classroom. Here, the focus was on instructor variables instead. Students completed questionnaires and reported their own perceptions on their attendance and participation in class as well as their perceptions of their instructor's nonverbal immediacy, homophily, interpersonal attraction, and verbal aggression. The results indicated that students who perceived their teachers as higher in immediacy, homophily, and interpersonal attraction were more likely to attend class and more likely to participate in class. Students who …

The Influence Of Friendship, Friendship Quality, And Gender On Collaborative Processes And Performance., Lisa Marie Swenson Jan 2000

The Influence Of Friendship, Friendship Quality, And Gender On Collaborative Processes And Performance., Lisa Marie Swenson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Characteristics of peer collaborators (gender) and the collaborative context (friendship, friendship quality, same-gender peer) may affect task processes and performance. Forty six same-gender adolescent dyads (26 girl dyads, 20 boy dyads; mean age = 15.69 yrs) collaborated on a problem-solving task that involved planning a route around a hypothetical town to obtain various items. Goals for and perceptions of collaboration were assessed as an index of collaborative processes. Performance was assessed through route length, time to complete the task, total cost, and errors on the task. Contrary to predictions, collaborating with a friend, though not detrimental to performance, did not …

An Empirical Analysis Of Unit Trust Performance In Singapore, Joseph H. H. Chia, Yiu Kuen Tse Jan 2000

An Empirical Analysis Of Unit Trust Performance In Singapore, Joseph H. H. Chia, Yiu Kuen Tse

Research Collection School Of Economics

The Singapore government’s recent strategic plan to develop the financial sector has placed much emphasis on the fund management industry. In this paper we examine the unit trust performance in Singapore in the 90s. Our results show that fund managers in general performed poorly in security analysis and market timing. However, they performed fairly well in risk-adjusted returns and generally maintained well-diversified portfolios. We find that there is little consistency in the performance ranking of the evaluated portfolios, although there is evidence of repeat performance of some top funds. Our analysis also shows that fund managers could indeed make excess …

Development And Initial Validation Of A Structured Interview For The Detection Of Malingered Mild Head Injury, Margaret Anne Ackley Jan 2000

Development And Initial Validation Of A Structured Interview For The Detection Of Malingered Mild Head Injury, Margaret Anne Ackley

Open Access Dissertations

Neuropsychologists often assess individuals involved in litigation, and who may be in a position to obtain significant financial compensation. Malingering measures are often employed in these assessments, however, the accuracy of these measures may be less than satisfactory. Most malingering measures are not targeted to mild head injury, a very common type of claim. The goal of this research was to begin the development and validation of a measure specifically designed to detect malingering of mild head injury symptoms. More accurate assessment can help identify false claims, and also establish the merit of genuine claims.

A 472-item questionnaire was developed …

African American Identity, Experience With Racism, And Meaning In Life Among Black College Students, Brian L. Ragsdale Jan 2000

African American Identity, Experience With Racism, And Meaning In Life Among Black College Students, Brian L. Ragsdale

Open Access Dissertations

Experience with racism and its relationship to meaning in life (i.e., the degree to which a person feels the world is a safe and caring place), African American identity, and African American acculturation were explored in a sample of Black college students (N = 48) who attended a predominately White, public, state university in the Northeastern United States. Black men and women who have Black nationalistic ideals and were immersed in Black culture reported more lifetime racist experience than those students who were less immersed in African American culture. As a group, Black women who were under the age of …

Regulating Tempo In A Continuation Finger-Tapping Task, Arthur Allen Little Jan 2000

Regulating Tempo In A Continuation Finger-Tapping Task, Arthur Allen Little

Open Access Dissertations

It is well known that people can produce regular rhythms, such as clapping or finger tapping-what is not well known is how such rhythms are maintained over time. One of the simplest activities to measure human rhythms is "continuation finger tapping," in which subjects are first asked to copy an audible rhythm by tapping along with their finger, and then attempt to maintain that tapping rate after the pacer tones stop.

The purpose of this study was to learn more about how tempo is regulated in continuation finger-tapping. In this context, "regulated" refers to the rules, both empirical and hypothetical, …

Studies Of Grief: Narratives Of Incarcerated Women Who Experienced The Death Of A Significant Person While In Prison, Ginette Gosselin Ferszt Jan 2000

Studies Of Grief: Narratives Of Incarcerated Women Who Experienced The Death Of A Significant Person While In Prison, Ginette Gosselin Ferszt

Open Access Dissertations

One of the most important issues that an individual confronts during one's life is the death of a significant person. Given the contextual nature of grief, incarcerated women are faced with unique challenges when the death of a person occurs during their imprisonment. Yet, little is known about grief experiences under these circumstances.

The research questions guiding this qualitative study were: What are the meanings of the grief experience of incarcerated women? How does their grieving process compare with images of grief depicted as a normal process? To what extent do the women perceive incarceration influencing their grief? In-depth interviews …

Recovered And Continuous Memories Of Childhood Sexual Abuse: A Quantitative And Qualitative Analysis, Linda Ribble Stoler Jan 2000

Recovered And Continuous Memories Of Childhood Sexual Abuse: A Quantitative And Qualitative Analysis, Linda Ribble Stoler

Open Access Dissertations

This study is an in-depth examination of women who reported childhood sexual abuse (CSA). Among a non-clinical sample of 26 women, ages 22 - 65, 11 reported they had always remembered CSA (continuous memories) and 15 reported they had forgotten CSA for some period of their lives (delayed memories). Participants completed a questionnaire which included demographics, abuse history, therapy history, symptom checklists, Family Functioning Scale, Dissociative Experiences Scale, and the Adult Sexual Victimization Scale, and were then interviewed. Eighty-six percent of women with delayed, and 46% with continuous, memories reported corroboration. Only one woman reported a therapist was the first …
