Masculinity And Femininity: Origins And Implications (Chapter Two Of Growing Strong Daughters), Lisa Graham Mcminn Jan 2000

Masculinity And Femininity: Origins And Implications (Chapter Two Of Growing Strong Daughters), Lisa Graham Mcminn

Faculty Publications - Department of Sociology

Excerpt: "God could have made one sex, but he chose to create two distinct image-bearing creatures. Articulating conclusions about how women and men bear God's image differently is difficult, perhaps because we believe we must first figure out which differences to attribute to environment and which are knitted into our beings at conception."

Book Review: Ken Goldberg's "The Robot In The Garden", Cindy Ahuna Jan 2000

Book Review: Ken Goldberg's "The Robot In The Garden", Cindy Ahuna

SWITCH

In this book review, Cindy Ahuna summarizes Ken Goldberg's view on the relationships between technology and shared experiences of telepresence and cybernetic systems. The book, "Robot in the Garden" is a collective transcription of telerobotic research and documentation. In the article, Ahuna dissects this book as a breakdown of telerobotic and its relationship with the internet, epistemology, and subcategories of technology based around the internet. The book illustrates critical points of reference regarding telerobotic “case studies in progress; theoretical beliefs; telerobotic scenarios; arguments and parallels of epistemology; questions and approaches to mediation; differences between using the Internet and other acknowledge-based …

A Preferred Vision For Administering Elementary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Carole J. Bernard Jan 2000

A Preferred Vision For Administering Elementary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Carole J. Bernard

Graduate Research Papers

Working together in a cohort group and acting as a quasi-administrator has afforded me the opportunity to receive theoretical knowledge as well as on-the-job training. The cohort has also helped me as a participant develop an understanding and respect for individuals from different backgrounds and experiences. Through on-the-job training I have been able to develop and practice my own leadership style while working and learning effective strategies from my principal. The blending of these two aspects of leadership experience have contributed significantly to prepare me as a future principal. I believe the cohort, a cadre of leaders, is dedicated to …

The Influence Of School Staffs On Primary Pgce Trainee Teachers' Professional Learning, Robin Michael Yeomans Jan 2000

The Influence Of School Staffs On Primary Pgce Trainee Teachers' Professional Learning, Robin Michael Yeomans

Plymouth Institute of Education Theses

This thesis is a multi-case study of the placement professional learning of fifteen primary PGCE trauiees within the school-based part of teacher training. It is concerned with the influence of individual staff, especially mentors and host class teachers, as well as of whole staffs and sub-groups, on adult and pupil oriented aspects of teachers' jobs (though excluding a detailed study of the development of subject knowledge or of specific classroom skills). A participant observer strategy was used within a grounded theory approach to develop agenda for semi-structured interviews with trainees. The main findings are that trauiees leamt through four modes …

Nature And Justifiability Of The Act Of Collective Worship In Schools, Jeanette Gill Jan 2000

Nature And Justifiability Of The Act Of Collective Worship In Schools, Jeanette Gill

Plymouth Institute of Education Theses

This thesis, which moves through three stages, asks whether the compulsory provision of a daily act of collective worship can be justified in the schools of a liberal society. It begins with an analysis of the public debate which has surrounded its presence since legislation in 1944 formalised existing practice, and notes that its arguments are based on differing perceptions of the value of religious practice, the needs of the child, the relationship between religion and morality, and the nature of society. Because this public debate is often distanced from actual practice, research was undertaken in primary and secondary schools …

An Investigation Of Lower Secondary Pupils' Images Of Mathematics And Mathematicians, Susan Helen Picker Jan 2000

An Investigation Of Lower Secondary Pupils' Images Of Mathematics And Mathematicians, Susan Helen Picker

Plymouth Institute of Education Theses

This thesis reports on a three-part research project in which the images of mathematics and mathematicians held by lower secondary pupils were investigated. A survey tool which asked pupils to draw a picture of a mathematician at work, and which included a Likert-type scale and open-ended writing prompts, was designed and developed for use in an international study of pupils in five countries (n = 476). The results indicate that while some pupils hold stereotypical images in common, all pupils appear to know very little about mathematicians and the work they do. Mathematicians' invisibility to pupils of this age appears …

Speciation Of Mercury By Chromatography Coupled With Atomic Spectrometry, Helen Elisabeth Louise Armstrong Jan 2000

Speciation Of Mercury By Chromatography Coupled With Atomic Spectrometry, Helen Elisabeth Louise Armstrong

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

A commercial GC-AFS instrument has been developed and optimised for the speciation of organomercury. This instrument couples a GC oven to a modified atomic fluorescence detector via a ceramic pyrolyser. Organomercury compounds in dichloromethane solvent were directly injected through a Programmable Temperature Vaporiser Injector onto a DBl Megabore column. Once separated, the compounds eluted from the column and were atomised in the pyrolyser then detected by AFS. The direct injection technique, ceramic pyrolysis design and argon purged detector have improved previous instrument designs by enhancing and maintaining sensitivity. The instrumental limit of detection was determined to be 0.25 pg Hg …

Evidence Issues In Domestic Violence Civil Cases, Jane C. Murphy, Jane H. Aiken Jan 2000

Evidence Issues In Domestic Violence Civil Cases, Jane C. Murphy, Jane H. Aiken

All Faculty Scholarship

New laws and policies aimed at protecting victims of domestic violence have been adopted across the country over the last twenty years. The legal approaches taken to protect battered women and control family violence have resulted in significant changes in family law. New laws include statutes permitting civil protection or restraining orders, and laws requiring that domestic violence be considered in custody and/or visitation decisions. Both of these types of statutory reforms can provide protection to adult victims of domestic violence and their children. Evaluating a parent's fitness by considering past acts of violence to other family members results in decisions …

When Daddy Wants Out: The Issue Of Paternity, Jane C. Murphy, Cheri Wyron Levin

All Faculty Scholarship

Perhaps you've seen the signs along a number of major highways in Maryland. A pregnant Mona Lisa advertising a DNA testing company with the caption "Who's the Daddy?" With the rise in the number of children born out of wedlock in Maryland in the last several decades, paternity testing is becoming routine and family law practitioners are handling more cases in which the father or mother or both are trying to change who is named as the legal father in a paternity or divorce judgment. The law governing such cases has changed substantially since 1995. This article will guide the …

When The Wall Has Fallen: Decades Of Failure In The Supervision Of Capital Juries, José F. Anderson Jan 2000

When The Wall Has Fallen: Decades Of Failure In The Supervision Of Capital Juries, José F. Anderson

All Faculty Scholarship

Since the return of capital punishment after Furman v. Georgia nearly three decades ago, the Supreme Court of the United States has struggled to control the administration of capital punishment when those decisions are made or recommended by a citizen jury. Although there is no constitutional requirement that a jury participate in the death penalty process, most states do provide, through their capital punishment statutes, that a jury will participate in the decision. The preference for jury sentencing in these circumstances reflects a reluctance to leave power over life solely in the hands of one judge. Still, some scholars have …

The Effect Of Therapeutic Horsemanship Program On Emotionally Disturbed Boys, Alisa J. Greenwald Jan 2000

The Effect Of Therapeutic Horsemanship Program On Emotionally Disturbed Boys, Alisa J. Greenwald

Other Faculty of Health Theses

The relationships between humans and animals have been associated with various therapeutic implications. While there is no agreed upon name, the term "pet facilitated therapy" has become widely accepted. Pet facilitated therapy has been particularly adopted to describe the relationship between humans and domestic animals. In contrast to public attitudes of twenty years ago, the field of animal-human relationships is now respected as a legitimate area of research investigation (Levinson, 1982.) Numerous studies have been conducted on the benefits of the relationships between domestic animals and humans; however, there continues to be little empirical evidence that specifically addresses the relationship …

Writing The Real: The Collages Of Hannelore Baron, Valerie James Reardon Jan 2000

Writing The Real: The Collages Of Hannelore Baron, Valerie James Reardon

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Baron's work has not been extensively studied nor is it known in full. Critical writings and scholarly attention have focused on the work as representative of Holocaust suffering. This thesis intervenes in that assumption by arguing that it is possible to understand Baron's processes of making collage as a significant case study in the problematic of signification and a complex of differences none of which are reducible to or deducible from each other. Drawing together a range of biographical information, primary source material and close readings of many of Baron's collages (including two hitherto unseen series) traces are revealed of …

Multidimensionality Of Entrepreneurial Firm-Level Processes: Do The Dimensions Covary?, Phil E. Stetz, Roy Howell, Alex Stewart, John D. Blair, Myron D. Fottler Jan 2000

Multidimensionality Of Entrepreneurial Firm-Level Processes: Do The Dimensions Covary?, Phil E. Stetz, Roy Howell, Alex Stewart, John D. Blair, Myron D. Fottler

Management Faculty Research and Publications

Covariance (or not) among the first-order dimensions of firm-level entrepreneurial processes underpins a fundamental and non-trivial difference between the entrepreneurial orientation and entrepreneurial posture constructs. Utilizing a typology developed for multi-dimensional constructs, we operationalized each construct according to its specific conceptualization (relationships among the dimensions) and compared and contrasted each construct in an identical nomological network. Although we found support for both theories, the entrepreneurial orientation construct was more robust in explaining additional variance in growth. Additionally, our findings suggest that the means through which the first-order dimensions are operationalized—latent vs. summates— significantly affect the analysis.

South Asian Divorce And Disputes Involving Children Of South Asian Origin, William Hay Jan 2000

South Asian Divorce And Disputes Involving Children Of South Asian Origin, William Hay

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis is concerned with two discrete but related themes that are of considerable socio-legal significance: South Asian divorce and disputes involving South Asian children. Both themes are explored empirically by means of a qualitative research study conducted in an urban and industrial area of Britain with a high South Asian population. The thesis thus seeks to provide much needed information concerning what are currently two poorly understood social problems. The material is presented in three main sections. The first section provides the wider context to the study including a discussion of the changing face of South Asian social relations …

Processing Writing: From Text To Textual Interventions, Caroline Bergvall Jan 2000

Processing Writing: From Text To Textual Interventions, Caroline Bergvall

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This submission comprises the main bulk of the critical and textual work I have researched and developed over the last five years. Throughout this period, I have been particularly interested in exploring issues of interdisciplinarity for writers and text-practitioners, at both a critical and a methodological level. An interest in cross-media and site-related approaches to writing plays an important role in this. This is reflected in the thematics of the various critical texts, as well as in the fairly broad range of textual modes submitted. As a whole, this work can be seen in close continuity with my pedagogical involvement …

Discrimination Based On Hiv/Aids And Other Conditions: "Disability" As Defined Under Federal And State Law, Lawrence O. Gostin, David W. Webber

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

In this Article, we examine the disability definition "problem" from the standpoint of HIV infection, specifically HIV infection in its "asymptomatic" phase . . . We begin by summarizing the need for federal nondiscrimination standards offering protection for individuals with HIV. We then provide a brief discussion of the definition of disability under the resulting legislation, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA). We summarize the early judicial and administrative views of the ADA as protecting individuals with HIV. We next turn to judicial interpretation of the ADA in cases in which that understanding has been disputed, including, most …

Collaborative teaching is then defined as an alternative to students being pulled out to receive resource room services. The premises of collaborative teaching are shared. Included …

Impact Of Insecure Attachment On Children's Social Skill Development, Kimberly A. Conrad Jan 2000

Impact Of Insecure Attachment On Children's Social Skill Development, Kimberly A. Conrad

Graduate Research Papers

This paper focuses primarily on the importance of secure parent/child attachment to healthy development of children. Attachment theory is utilized to explain possible causes of pathological and anti-social behavior. In particular, it describes how insecure (both anxious and avoidant) attachments between parent (caretaker) and child may lead to angry, coercive, immature, withdrawn, or even suicidal behaviors in children. Parent/child attachment problems are linked to social skill deficits and problems in peer relationships. Implications for school psychologists and for future research are offered.

Effective Multidisciplinary Team Problem Solving : A Review Of Literature, Debra S. Meyer Jan 2000

Effective Multidisciplinary Team Problem Solving : A Review Of Literature, Debra S. Meyer

Graduate Research Papers

The historical legislation mandating multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) in schools is well known, yet relatively little attention has been directed toward either evaluating systematic processes that would lead to the desired outcome of better services to all students or educating team members in problem solving content and process. The purpose of the study was to examine the factors that influence problem solving outcomes and other aspects of service delivery in MDT settings, including the changing role of school psychologists.

Results indicated much variability and little consensus in several areas: clarity of role expectations, family involvement, interdisciplinary collaboration, continuing educational training, and …

Literacy In The Multiage Classroom : A Review Of The Research, Barbara Avaux Messer Jan 2000

Literacy In The Multiage Classroom : A Review Of The Research, Barbara Avaux Messer

Graduate Research Papers

Multi-age grouping has a long history and is once again being studied as a viable alternative to the age-graded education model. Research indicates that multi-age programs are academically effective as well as being beneficial in promoting feelings of self-efficacy in students. Our society has changed since the inception of the age-graded model and teachers today are looking at multi-age education as a way to meet the diverse needs of their students. Successful multi-age programs have similar characteristics, but each program needs to be designed to meet the needs of the community it serves. Specific teaching strategies, materials, and assessment methods, …
