The Relationship Between The Health-Promoting Practices Of Advanced Practice Nurses And Their Counseling Of Patients, Wanda Marie Boyer Jan 2000

The Relationship Between The Health-Promoting Practices Of Advanced Practice Nurses And Their Counseling Of Patients, Wanda Marie Boyer

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Among healthcare professionals, there is little research on health promotion and health-promoting practices, particularly advanced practice nurses (APN's) The literature also reveals a paucity of research on the counseling practices of APN's. The purpose of this descriptive, correlational study was to examine the relationships between selected variables, derived from Pender's revised Health Promotion Model (1996), and the degree to which they explain advanced practice nurses' current practice of health-promoting behaviors from a random sample of APN's (N = 357). The random sample was obtained from the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. The study also described the relationship between these behaviors …

Due to the vast resources allocated to training, it is important to fully understand its impact. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of level of training on employees' perceived psychological empowerment, commitment, and resultant job performance within the hospitality industry. Data were collected from 158 Air Force employees working on one of two military bases in the areas of food service, lodging, recreation, fitness, linen exchange, and mortuary affairs. Specifically, this research …

The Ban On Reason: Gays In The Military, Justin Cohen Jan 2000

The Ban On Reason: Gays In The Military, Justin Cohen

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis seeks to explain how and why President Bill Clinton's 1993 attempt to drop the ban on homosexuals serving in the military was vehemently opposed by key stakeholders, even though empirical evidence strongly indicates that the ban is unwarranted and conflicts with America's democratic ethos; The theoretical framework for this paper is based on Roger Cobb and Charles Elder's writings on the political use of symbols. By manipulating cultural symbols, such as that of the masculine warrior, opponents of policy change forced Clinton into a compromise, the unsuccessful "don't ask, don't tell" policy. In torpedoing Clinton's effort, these antagonists …

Tainted Perceptions: Liberal-Democracy And American Popular Images Of China, Thomas Laszlo Dorogi Jan 2000

Tainted Perceptions: Liberal-Democracy And American Popular Images Of China, Thomas Laszlo Dorogi

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The primary thesis of this study is that beginning with the pre-Tiananmen Square incident of 1989, American popular and institutional images of China focused on the reformist nature the government, but following the military crackdown in June 1989, this optimism dwindled and resulted in the creation of an ambivalent cross-cultural atmosphere toward the Chinese for the next half decade. When Chinese leaders decided to undertake military exercises in the Taiwan Strait in mid-1995, America's perception of the PRC swung even further in a distinctly negative direction; an event that marked the outset of a three year period during which Chinese …

The floor-persons were asked to rank a selection of ten variables that may be important to their motivation and satisfaction at work. Their immediate supervisors were also surveyed to see whether they could correctly predict the job attributes the floor-persons considered most important. A review of general motivational theories, and operational specifics for the position of slot floor-person are presented; The results of the survey were compared with the results of similar studies on casino table games dealers, hospitality employees, and general …

Fear As A Predictor Of Firearm Ownership And Concealed Weapons Permits In Clark County, Nevada, Becky Beckstead Harris Jan 2000

Fear As A Predictor Of Firearm Ownership And Concealed Weapons Permits In Clark County, Nevada, Becky Beckstead Harris

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study is specific to Clark County, Nevada. Two relationships, the relationship between fear and gun possession [defined in terms of firearms registration] and the relationship between fear and the issuance of concealed weapons permits, were posited. Data for the number of registered firearms and issued concealed weapons permits were obtained from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Firearms Detail and CCW Detail. Criminal incidents involving firearms in public areas that appeared to be random in nature [stranger to stranger violence] were gathered through an archive search of Nevada's largest newspaper servicing Clark County, the Las Vegas Review-Journal; Statistical analysis …

A Study Of The Effect Of Music Genre And Intensity On Ethnic Menu Item Selection In A Military Dining Facility, Tammy S Hinskton

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Restaurateurs spend millions of dollars yearly in the design, building, and renovations to their establishments. In many cases, atmosphere has a greater influence over consumers' purchase decisions than the product itself. One of the most easily and inexpensively adjusted element of the atmosphere is music; The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of music genre and intensity on patrons' ethnic menu item selection of a military dining facility in the Southwestern United States. The extent to which ethnic music could influence associated ethnic menu items was examined; Three research questions were formulated to address this issue. The …

Selection Of Exercise Intensity Using Perceptual Cues During Television Distraction, Wendee Ellen Kukuwich Jan 2000

Selection Of Exercise Intensity Using Perceptual Cues During Television Distraction, Wendee Ellen Kukuwich

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The selection of exercise intensity during television distraction was studied in 20 highly-fit males (VO2peak: 63.2 +/- 10.7 ml·kg -1·min-1) between the ages of 28 and 45 years. It was hypothesized that the perception of exercise intensity during cardiovascular exercise would be influenced by an environmental distraction, such as watching television (TV). A within-subjects design was used to compare heart rate (HR), stride frequency (SF), and MET level responses recorded during 15 minutes of exercise performed with and without distraction. Seventeen of the 20 subjects had a change in HR of greater than 5 bpm between conditions, with 9 subjects …

Basic Skills Teacher Licensure Test Scores As College Of Education Admission Criteria, Audrey Lawrence Jan 2000

Basic Skills Teacher Licensure Test Scores As College Of Education Admission Criteria, Audrey Lawrence

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The objective of this paper is to analyze the criterion-related validity of the Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) cut-scores as teacher education program admission criteria. PPST and American College Test (ACT) scores of 372 graduates, and PPST scores and other academic characteristics of 1,062 graduates of a Nevada teacher education program were examined. Findings of this study support that PPST and ACT subtests measure similar constructs, PPST scores do not predict success in student teaching, nor do they predict teacher candidates' college GPAs over and above ACT scores. In addition, over 99 percent of students who received scores of 22 or …

An Outcomes Study Of Diabetes Education, Tara Lynn Mcgill Jan 2000

An Outcomes Study Of Diabetes Education, Tara Lynn Mcgill

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a twelve-hour diabetic education program on self-care behaviors and level of integration of diabetes in patients with type 1 & type 2 diabetes. Using the Theory of Integration (Hernandez, 1995) as the study's conceptual framework, an outcomes study was conducted. Thirty-five questionnaires were distributed to subjects at the initial class of the diabetes education program, with 22 being able to be utilized for analysis; The results of this study showed that there was a significant increase in the level of integration of diabetes (t(21) = 2.998, p < .005). When individual statements of integration were assessed, three areas were found to have a significant increase. These included, understanding how diabetes affects one's body by living with diabetes (t(21) = 2.890, p < .005), being aware of bodily cues that distinguish blood glucose levels (t(21) = 2.822, p < .005), and knowing more about taking care of one's diabetes more than anyone (t(21) = 3.044, p < .005); Analysis of individual statements of self-care behavior included significant changes in eating the foods according to a diabetes meal plan (t(22) = 2.802, p < .005), eating snacks at the right time of day (t(21) = 3.049, p < .005), knowing how to treat a hypoglycemic reaction (t(22) 3.323, p < .005) and carrying a sugar source to treat those hypoglycemic reactions (t(22) = 3.045, p < .005). Significant increases were also noted in the logging of blood glucose results (t(22) = 3.239, p < .005), and in obtaining the amount of exercise needed for diabetes (t(22) = 3.023, p < .005). This study is an important initial evaluation of the effects of a diabetes education program on diabetes patients' selfcare behaviors and level of integration.

The Effect Of Self-Generated Information On The Plausibility Of Unlikely Autobiographical Events, Michele Dawn Sheremeta Jan 2000

The Effect Of Self-Generated Information On The Plausibility Of Unlikely Autobiographical Events, Michele Dawn Sheremeta

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Plausibility of unlikely events was investigated using a pre-test and post-test of the Life Events Inventory (Garry, et al, 1996). Students (N = 55) at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas completed two sessions, including a plausibility scenario phase in which they were asked to describe four events chosen by the researcher from the pre-test on the basis of reported plausibility. Two of the events were rated low in plausibility and two were rated high in plausibility. Results indicate that plausibility ratings increase more for low rated items when participants are asked to describe those items than for control items …

Physiological Effects Of Progressive Relaxation In Trained Runners During Submaximal Treadmill Exercise, Thomas James Westendorf Jan 2000

Physiological Effects Of Progressive Relaxation In Trained Runners During Submaximal Treadmill Exercise, Thomas James Westendorf

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

To determine the physiological effects of a one-week progressive relaxation protocol on exercise efficiency, five trained, male runners volunteered to participate in this study. The results of this study show that it is possible to reduce heart rate during progressive relaxation at rest, after one week of training. In addition, the results of this study indicate that although there was a significant reduction in minute ventilation during exercise, VO 2 did not change. These results suggests that there was no carry-over effect while exercising, therefore one week of progressive relaxation may not be long enough or an effective technique to …

The Effectiveness Of Functional Family Therapy In Substance-Involved Family Preservation Clients, Andrew D Butcher Jan 2000

The Effectiveness Of Functional Family Therapy In Substance-Involved Family Preservation Clients, Andrew D Butcher

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Abuse and neglect of children has been a recognized problem in America for many years. Recent developments in the child welfare system have introduced intensive, family-based services, otherwise known as family preservation services. The aim is to preserve the family and provide reasonable efforts to avoid out of home placement. State and private family preservation programs across the country have been faced with the challenge of evaluating program effectiveness and to better meet the needs of client populations by enhancing treatment models and programs; The Nevada State Division of Child and Family Services (DCFS) has utilized valuable resources to evaluate …

The Integration Of Facial And Auditory Affect: An Emotional Mcgurk Effect?, Teri Jean Forrest Jan 2000

The Integration Of Facial And Auditory Affect: An Emotional Mcgurk Effect?, Teri Jean Forrest

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Research investigating human emotion processing has typically studied either auditory (vocal) or visual (facial) information in isolation. However, speech perception literature supports integration of auditory and visual phonetic information by way of the McGurk effect. This study hypothesized an emotional McGurk effect (i.e., integration of auditory and visual emotional information). To evaluate this hypothesis, emotionally incongruent auditory-visual stimuli (e.g., a joyful voice with a sad face) were developed on a sample of 120 participants. These stimuli were then presented to 30 additional participants who categorized them according to one of eight common emotions. Results indicated significant (p < .001) Condition by Emotion interaction effects, suggesting that emotional information from auditory and visual sources is integrated during the perception of auditory emotion. This integration appears to occur in a predictable manner. To understand emotion perception, future studies will need to consider the interaction of auditory and visual emotional information.

The Effects Of Adhd Child And Parenting Groups, Tonya Yvonne Gardner-Hernandez Jan 2000

The Effects Of Adhd Child And Parenting Groups, Tonya Yvonne Gardner-Hernandez

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most commonly diagnosed childhood disorders in the United States. The symptomatic behaviors of ADHD often start as noncompliant behaviors, which can manifest themselves into increasingly inappropriate behaviors. If left untreated ADHD can become the catalyst for additional disruptive behavior disorders, as the child develops and begins to experience an increase in academic demands, family and peer rejection; This study used a one-group pretest-posttest design that was implemented in four separate ADHD parent and child groups. There were 16 child participants and 9 parent participants. Three of the five hypotheses were accepted. The children's …

The Philosophical And Historical Dynamics Of Watsuji Tetsuro's Cultural Phenomenology, Edgar Allan Weir

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study will examine one of the greatest modern Japanese philosophers, Watsuji Tetsuro. In a long and prodigious life Watsuji produced some of the most insightful works now extant in ethics, cultural identity, and intellectual history. This work will explicate two pillars of Watsuji's philosophy: the source of authentic Japanese identity and the primacy of human relationships within that authenticity. This study will also uncover the conjunctures between history and thought that sparked the developments and transformations in Watsuji's philosophy. More importantly, it will attempt to free Watsuji's theories from telelogical approaches that have utilized the war, erroneously conflating Watsuji's …

Evoked Expectations And Evaluational Reactions To Accented English, Caridad F. Brito Jan 2000

Evoked Expectations And Evaluational Reactions To Accented English, Caridad F. Brito

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Researchers have found that variations in listeners' judgments of speakers are associated with the speakers' accent. It was hypothesized that: (1) Spanish accented speakers would be evaluated less favorably than standard English speakers; (2) listeners would rate both accented and non-accented speakers on the basis of their expectations and not according to the speakers' actual vocal characteristics; (3) listeners would evaluate speakers differently, depending upon the lexical complexity of the speech utilized by speakers; and (4) listeners would evaluate standard and nonstandard English speakers differently, depending upon the speakers' gender. One hundred-twenty subjects evaluated four speakers on semantic differential type …
