Neurosciences

OBJECTIVE: This study reports the results of a questionnaire design to elicit doctors views about epilepsy. METHODS: Sixty-two percent of medical staff working in different regions of Oman responded. The questionnaire covered certain topics regarding the source of the knowledge of the doctors on seizure disorders and the personalities and behavior of people with epilepsy. RESULTS: The study suggests that although doctors in Oman gained knowledge on epilepsy prior to medical education, more doctors judged people with epilepsy ‘negatively’ compared to ‘positively’ for normal people. CONCLUSION: A developing country such as Oman needs to inculcate perceptions and attitude that are …

Childhood Enuresis. Epidemiology, Pathophysiology And Management, Yaser S. Al-Ghamdy, Naseem A. Qureshi, Muzamil H. Abdelgadir

Neurosciences

The goal of this article is to review childhood enuresis, which is a common behavioral condition reported in millions of children worldwide. An online computer search was made, and the literature up to 1997 was screened in order to include relevant data for this review. The prevalence of childhood enuresis varies across reviewed studies. This was attributed to a variety of sociodemographic and cultural dynamics of societies. Similarly, the pathophysiology of this ubiquitous symptom is determined by multiple risk factors including biological, psychological, social, and cultural, but the developmental/maturational delay influenced by genetics remains the most plausible explanation. Although a …

In-Patient Treatment For Resistant Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Mohammed A. Al-Sughayir Jan 2000

In-Patient Treatment For Resistant Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Mohammed A. Al-Sughayir

Neurosciences

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is one of the increasing psychological disorders. If not detected early and treated properly, obsessive-compulsive disorder usually becomes an incapacitating illness adversely affecting almost all aspects of the patient’s life. Outpatient behavioral and pharmacotherapies frequently fail. This is a report on a severe case of obsessive-compulsive disorder that was treated as an in-patient with both behavior and pharmacotherapies, she was then followed up for 5 years with no relapse. The case reflects the importance and the need for in-patient units for severe resistant obsessive compulsive cases especially in Saudi Arabia where we have an increasing number of …

A Novel Experimental Approach To The Explication Of Information Processing Differences Between High And Low Anxious Individuals., Gina M. Manguno-Mire

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The information processing perspective of cognition and emotion has been a fruitful area of research inquiry in recent years. As a result of this recent spate of interest, emotional processing biases in anxiety have been consistently demonstrated, indicating that anxious individuals possess a processing priority for threatening information. This study is an attempt to further examine the processing biases which characterize anxious and nonanxious individuals. Pilot work was conducted to investigate the utility of a novel approach, the affective categorization task, to examine the affective meaning of lexical stimuli. Pilot research using the affective categorization task with socially anxious individuals …

Perceived Social Support Of Survivors Of Suicide Who Attend A Support Group Compared To Those Survivors Of Suicide Who Are Non-Attendees, Tina M. Murphy

Theses

Death from suicide results in a troublesome and complex adjustment for the surviving friends and family members. As compared to other forms of bereavement, suicide survivors are likely to experience different grief reactions than people dealing with other types of loss. The survivor of suicide may suffer from social rejection and alienation. In this study, the level of perceived social support of survivors of suicide who attend a support group (n=22 ) was compared to the level of perceived social support in survivors of suicide who do not attend a support group (n=20). Subjects had lost a friend or family …

Attachment Styles And Levels Of Enacted Social Support In Adults, Virginia B. Schenck Jan 2000

Attachment Styles And Levels Of Enacted Social Support In Adults, Virginia B. Schenck

Theses

Virginia B. Schenck’s thesis explores how adult attachment styles relate to the actual use of social support—known as enacted social support. While much prior research focuses on perceived support (people’s beliefs about the availability of help), this study shifts focus to what people actually do when they need assistance. Schenck surveyed 110 adults using two self-report measures: the Social Support Behaviors Scale and the Attachment Styles Scale. Participants were categorized into secure, avoidant, and preoccupied attachment styles, though the preoccupied group was too small to analyze statistically. The findings showed that adults with avoidant attachment styles reported significantly lower levels …

The Relationships Of Income, Predisposed Depression, And Marital Satisfactionto, Brian D. Dement Jan 2000

The Relationships Of Income, Predisposed Depression, And Marital Satisfactionto, Brian D. Dement

Theses

This study investigated the relationships of income, depression level and marital satisfaction, in the second trimester of pregnancy, to levels of depression approximately six months after childbirth. Data from thirty-eight women, completing self-report questionnaires that included the CES-O depression scales, were analyzed from within a larger survey of one hundred and fifty-one primiparous mothers. The investigation revealed that levels of depression prior to delivery and income were strongly correlated to levels of depression postpartum. The relationship between marital satisfaction and depression was inconclusive.

The Effects Of Praise On Student Motivation In The Basic Communication Course, B. Scott Titsworth Jan 2000

The Effects Of Praise On Student Motivation In The Basic Communication Course, B. Scott Titsworth

Basic Communication Course Annual

This exploratory study tested the effects of praise on student motivation and affect toward a class and instructor. Participants (N=64) listened to a teacher-student interaction containing either praise or neutral feedback from the teacher. Students hearing praise reported higher levels of hypothetical affect and motivation than students hearing neutral feedback. Qualitative data were examined to help explain these results. Results are discussed in terms of future research possibilities in the basic course.

The Relationship Between A Required Self-Disclosure Speech And Public Speaking Anxiety: Considering Gender Equity, Deanna D. Sellnow, Tamara Golish Jan 2000

The Relationship Between A Required Self-Disclosure Speech And Public Speaking Anxiety: Considering Gender Equity, Deanna D. Sellnow, Tamara Golish

Basic Communication Course Annual

This study examines the relationship between a required self-disclosure speech and public speaking anxiety levels expressed by student speakers. If students report higher anxiety levels when asked to self-disclose during a speech, then the potential classroom climate warming advantages of such an assignment may not outweigh the disadvantages. Results indicated: (1) that most students did not report increased anxiety when presenting the self-disclosure speech; (2) there appeared to be no significant gender differences with regard to anxiety and self-disclosure in a public speaking situation; (3) students revealed that feeling confident, in control, and respected are primary factors necessary to reduce …

Assessment Of The Repeated Speech Performance As A Pedagogical Tool: A Pilot Study, Mark A. Gring, Jera W. Littlejohn Jan 2000

Assessment Of The Repeated Speech Performance As A Pedagogical Tool: A Pilot Study, Mark A. Gring, Jera W. Littlejohn

Basic Communication Course Annual

Realizing the ongoing need to develop pedagogy in public speaking, these researchers investigated the learning achieved by asking students to repeat one of their speech assignments. They assessed the value of this practice from the students' viewpoint as well as the statistical change in performance outcomes. Across the eight competencies evaluated, students' average scores increased significantly on the repeated speech. Students who scored in the lower quartile on the first speech benefited most from the second opportunity. The researchers conclude that allowing students to repeat a speech appears to have pedagogical and practical merit.

An Examination Of Male And Female Students' Perceptions Of Relational Closeness: Does The Basic Course Have An Influence?, Jennifer M. Heisler, Susan M. Bissett, Nancy L. Buerkel-Rothfuss Jan 2000

An Examination Of Male And Female Students' Perceptions Of Relational Closeness: Does The Basic Course Have An Influence?, Jennifer M. Heisler, Susan M. Bissett, Nancy L. Buerkel-Rothfuss

Basic Communication Course Annual

Several scholars have argued that men and women are socialized to establish interpersonal relationships, such as friendships, in different ways. Traditionally feminine individuals emphasize empathy, self-disclosure, and interdependence while masculine individuals rely on activities, helping behaviors, and advice/problem-solving. In spite of these differences, basic communication courses have provided students with only a model of traditionally feminine closeness skills in coursework and materials. This study sought to determine if, after 16 weeks of instruction in a basic communication course emphasizing feminine intimacy skills, male students would prefer masculine closeness behaviors. Three-hundred and seventy-three male and female students provided self-report data on …
