Que Chua Textiles: Preserving A Living Tradition, Nilda Callanaupa Jan 2000

Que Chua Textiles: Preserving A Living Tradition, Nilda Callanaupa

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Quechua Weavings as living art in the Andes today represent the contemporary textiles as result of transition of Pre-Colombian textiles of South America a textile tradition at least 2000 years. In Peru, after the Spanish arrival of 1532-33, many traditional arts were systematically replaced or mixed with European art styles. Fortunately, however, the strong tradition of backs trap loom weaving has survived.

Many changes have occurred in our traditional patterns, but a wide range of warp patterned techniques have today developed into the richest and most extraordinary dress that Andean villagers have known. Indigenous people living in outlying communities today …

Symbolic Content In Textile Motifs: Using The Semiotic Approach, Patricia Williams Jan 2000

Symbolic Content In Textile Motifs: Using The Semiotic Approach, Patricia Williams

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

John Deely (1990) stated that "the whole of human experience .. .is an interpretive structure mediated and sustained by signs". The investigation of the role of signs in the sphere of textiles is, to use Deely's phrase, one of "semiotic consciousness" or the awareness of symbolic content in clothing, cloth and textile motifs.

Semiotics is the theoretical accounting for signs and what they do. It is the study of signs and sign-using behavior including semiosis or the action of signs. The action, which may be physical or psychological, takes place between two subjects that exist physically plus a third element …

Self-Defense: Agent-Neutral And Agent-Relative Accounts, Jeremy Waldron Jan 2000

Self-Defense: Agent-Neutral And Agent-Relative Accounts, Jeremy Waldron

Faculty Articles

One of the innumerable debts I owe Sandy Kadish is in respect of his warm and consistent encouragement to invest some portion of my philosophical energies in the problems of the criminal law. When I replied that what I knew most about was the history of political philosophy, Sandy was undeterred. "Kant wrote about criminal law," he would say. "So did Hobbes and Locke. Those guys talked about capital punishment, individual responsibility and self-defense, just as much as they dealt with topics in political theory like the nature of law and the obligation to obey." He was right. There is …

The Social And Economic Status Of Eritrean Women: Advances And Reversals, Asgedet Stefanos Jan 2000

The Social And Economic Status Of Eritrean Women: Advances And Reversals, Asgedet Stefanos

Trotter Review

In assessing the post-independence status of women in Eritrea, I want to pose two questions. First, how did the leadership of the national liberation movement, the Eritrean People's Liberation Front (EPLF), embark on promoting women's emancipation, given the attitudes firmly rooted in the minds of both men and women that ran counter to the idea of an emancipated woman? Secondly, what changes were established in Eritrean women's public and personal lives during the national liberation struggle — in politics, economics, and the social realm?

This is an excerpt of the speech delivered by Asgedet Stefanos at the 20th Anniversary of …

Comparable Worth: Pay Equity And Women Of Color, Elizabeth A. Sherman Jan 2000

Comparable Worth: Pay Equity And Women Of Color, Elizabeth A. Sherman

Trotter Review

The relationship between women of color and community economic development is fundamentally a question of income. And, for women, questions of income more often than not become questions of pay equity - whether or not women and men are receiving equal pay for equal, or comparable work. Because the economy retains entrenched vestiges of sexual discrimination, the solutions to such problems lie within the political realm, where laws to ensure equality are created and enforced. In this regard, women themselves have a vital role to play as activists focusing on mitigating the barriers to opportunity that have depressed women's well …

An Instrument To Assess Self-Statements During Public Speaking: Scale Development And Preliminary Psychometric Properties, Stefan G. Hofmann, Patricia Marten Dibartolo Jan 2000

An Instrument To Assess Self-Statements During Public Speaking: Scale Development And Preliminary Psychometric Properties, Stefan G. Hofmann, Patricia Marten Dibartolo

Psychology: Faculty Publications

Public speaking is the most commonly reported fearful social situation. Although a number of contemporary theories emphasize the importance of cognitive processes in social anxiety, there is no instrument available to assess fearful thoughts experienced during public speaking. The Self-Statements During Public Speaking (SSPS) scale is a 10-item questionnaire consisting of two 5-item subscales, the Positive Self-Statements (SSPS-P) and the Negative Self-Statements subscale (SSPS-N). Four studies report on the development and the preliminary psychometric properties of this instrument.

Narrative Preaching: A Study Of Contemporary Theory And The Development And Implementation Of An Integrative Model In The Walla Walla College Church, John C. Cress Jan 2000

Narrative Preaching: A Study Of Contemporary Theory And The Development And Implementation Of An Integrative Model In The Walla Walla College Church, John C. Cress

Doctor of Ministry Projects

The Topic

The topic of this project is narrative preaching. Post-modern culture is characterized by a surfeit of information and a famine of meaning. A cacophony of voices competes for its attention and in such an environment God’s Word frequently goes unheard. Thus it is of critical importance that the gospel be heard in a "language" this culture readily understands. Because it is specifically attuned to the contemporary sensibility of human beings (i.e., it is a “language” most individuals intuitively understand), narrative and narrative forms of preaching have particular power to assist individuals in coming to saving faith in Jesus …

Development Of A Series Of Bible Study Guides To Prepare Preteens For Baptism And Membership In The Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Francois J. Sarault Jan 2000

Development Of A Series Of Bible Study Guides To Prepare Preteens For Baptism And Membership In The Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Francois J. Sarault

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

According to the 1992 Valuegenesis Study, a survey of Adventist youth in grades 7-12 showed that 77 percent wanted a deeper relationship with God, and 66 percent were interested or very interested in Bible study. Yet, an informal survey of existing materials created to lead SDA youth into a deeper relationship with Christ through Bible study, baptism into Christ, and active membership in the Adventist Church points to these existing materials as being inadequate in approach and content. Preparing preteens for baptism and active membership in the Seventh-day Adventist Church must include something more than simplifying adult Bible studies …
