Human Taste And Cognition In Tzeltal Maya Medicinal Plant Use, David G. Casagrande Jan 2000

Human Taste And Cognition In Tzeltal Maya Medicinal Plant Use, David G. Casagrande

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

Results of recent research strongly suggest that people find beneficial phytochemicals by selecting plants to use as medicinals and that taste plays a major role in this process. The research reported here involved an experiment performed with Highland Tzeltal Maya of Chiapas, Mexico to determine if bitterness served as a chemical cue for plants appropriate for treating gastrointestinal versus respiratory illnesses. Eight Tzeltal men and two women were asked to taste common medicinal preparations, describe the taste, and provide the name and medicinal use of the source plant. They were also shown dried specimens of the same plants and asked …

The Role Of Information In The U.K. Passenger Rail Industry, Glenn Lyons, Graeme Mclay Jan 2000

The Role Of Information In The U.K. Passenger Rail Industry, Glenn Lyons, Graeme Mclay

Journal of Public Transportation

In 1993, the U.K. passenger rail industry was privatized with expectations of greater investment, increased efficiency, and improved network performance. To date, progress has been mixed and the industry has been subject to a critical national press and passenger complaints that have reached record levels. The industry is continuing to develop a service that can do justice to its privatization. Passenger information is an important aspect of these improvements and national rail journey planning services are now heavily used. However, relatively little consideration has been given to understanding the role that information might play in assisting passengers who have already …

An Economic Analysis Of The Use Of Citations In The Law, Richard A. Posner Jan 2000

An Economic Analysis Of The Use Of Citations In The Law, Richard A. Posner

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

This paper examines the use of citations analysis as an empirical tool for understanding aspects of the legal system and for improving the performance of the system. Emphasis is laid on the use of such analysis as a means to evaluate courts and judges (and therefore as judicial-management tool), to test hypotheses about judicial behavior, and to evaluate and improve legal scholarship. It is argued that economic models, particularly of reputation and of human capital, can frame and guide the use of citiations analysis in law.

Catholic And Intellectual: Conjunction Or Disjunction?, Marcia L. Colish Jan 2000

Catholic And Intellectual: Conjunction Or Disjunction?, Marcia L. Colish

Marianist Award Lectures

Marcia L. Colish lectures on the apparent disconnect that is being formed in the contemporary world of the notion that Catholicism could not be related to anything rational. She highlights the idea that throughout history and through her practice, the Church in her institutions and universities has been a supporter of intellectual formation and development, not an inhibitor.

Internationalism, Regionalism, And National Culture: Music Control In Bavaria, 1945–1948, David Monod Jan 2000

Internationalism, Regionalism, And National Culture: Music Control In Bavaria, 1945–1948, David Monod

History Faculty Publications

For many Germans in the immediate postwar period, all that remained of their country was its art. Subjugation, destruction, the pain of unfathomable guilt: these had ripped away at the national psyche, severing nation from nationalism, person from people, the present from the past. “We are,” wrote Wolfgang Borchert in 1946, “a generation without a homecoming, because we have nothing to which we can return.” Nation: what would that word now mean? An occupied state no longer possessing statehood, a conquered people starved even of the moral strength that might come from resisting. Even if the institutions of national governance …

The Epistemic Contract Of Bisexual Erasure, Kenji Yoshino Jan 2000

The Epistemic Contract Of Bisexual Erasure, Kenji Yoshino

Faculty Articles

In this article, Professor Kenji Yoshino seeks to explain why the category of bisexuality has been erased in contemporary American political and legal discourse. He first argues that the invisibility of bisexuality relative to homosexuality does not reflect the incidences of those orientations in the population. Defining bisexuality as the possession of more than incidental desire for both sexes, Yoshino shows that the major sexuality studies demonstrate that the incidence of bisexuality is in fact greater than or comparable to the incidence of homosexuality. Yoshino explains the erasure of bisexuality by positing that both self-identified heterosexuals and self-identified homosexuals have …

I Spy: The Newsgatherer Under Cover, Diane L. Zimmerman Jan 2000

I Spy: The Newsgatherer Under Cover, Diane L. Zimmerman

Faculty Articles

Hysteria about the press, like the flu, breaks out periodically, and when it does, few of us are better off for having lived through the experience. We are currently on what I sincerely hope will prove to be the receding edge of the latest epidemic ofpublic outrage about the press, and, as usual, the frenzied state has not brought out the best in either the media or its critics.

Working Identity, Devon W. Carbado, Mitu Gulati Jan 2000

Working Identity, Devon W. Carbado, Mitu Gulati

Faculty Articles

The basic concepts of signaling and identity performance are familiar to most. This Article explores how those incentives and pressures to signal and work one's identity shape the workplace behavior and experiences of outsider groups, such as women and minorities. We argue that, because members of these groups are often likely to perceive themselves as subject to negative stereotypes, they are also likely to feel the need to do significant amounts of "extra" identity work to counter those stereotypes. Depending on the context, that extra work may not only result in significant opportunity costs, but may also entail a high …

The Repudiation Of The Marvelous: Jonson’S The Alchemist And The Limits Of Satire, Ian Mcadam Jan 2000

The Repudiation Of The Marvelous: Jonson’S The Alchemist And The Limits Of Satire, Ian Mcadam

Quidditas

Our present conception of alchemy is, at best, shadowy and confused. As Charles Nicholl states in The Chemical Theatre, "The modern image...tends in two directions: one scientific, the other magical. The first defines alchemy simply and chronologically as early chemistry...out of which modern chemistry began to emerge during the seventeenth century.” On the other hand, “alchemy is popularly defined as one of the ‘occult arts’.... To us, the alchemist’s avowed quest for miraculous substances—the Philosopher’s Stone which converts all to gold, the Elixir Vitae which confers immortality—belongs to the realm of magic rather than science.” Nevertheless, to consider Renaissance …
