If You Let Me Play: Determining Which Arguments "Count" In Debates About Title Ix And Gender Equity In College Athletics, Katherine L. Turpen, Catherine H. Palczewski
Iowa Journal of Communication
Despite women athletes' recent gains and the increasing popularity of women's team sports, disparities between men's and women's collegiate athletic programs persist. Twenty-seven years after the passage of Title IX federally funded college education programs still discriminate against their female athletes and there is Little, if anything, done to reprimand these schools. This essay argues that the disparity in treatment of men and women athletes may, in part, be attributed to the disparities in arguments far men's and women's athletics. The arguments advanced far female participation in sports focus on individual and affective issues such as self-esteem, teen pregnancy, and …

Legal Representation For Children In Protection Proceedings: Two Distinct Lawyer Roles Are Required, Donald N. Duquette
Legal Representation For Children In Protection Proceedings: Two Distinct Lawyer Roles Are Required, Donald N. Duquette
Articles
The thesis of this article is that it is a mistake to try to develop a single lawyer role for children in protection cases which tries to accommodate their developing capacities from infants to articulate teens. Sometimes a child needs a traditional attorney; sometimes a best interests advocate. We should adopt different standards for the different lawyer roles. Trying to define a single lawyer role for children of all ages and all capacities is an impossible task. This article argues that we should resolve the ambivalence not by adopting a client-directed or a best interests approach, but by having two …
Avoiding Common Problems In Using Teaching Assistants: Hard Lessons Learned From Peer Teaching Theory And Experience, Edward R. Becker, Rachel Croskery-Roberts
Avoiding Common Problems In Using Teaching Assistants: Hard Lessons Learned From Peer Teaching Theory And Experience, Edward R. Becker, Rachel Croskery-Roberts
Articles
A majority of American law schools rely on teaching assistants to help administer first-year legal writing, research, and analysis (LWRA) courses. Specifically, surveys jointly conducted by the Association of Legal Writing Directors (ALWD) and the Legal Writing Institute (LWI) consistently detail the extensive use many LWRA professors make of teaching assistants. Likewise, Julie Cheslik recognized in her article about her 1994 survey on the use of TAs in the typical LWRA course that "[o]ne of the most prevalent uses of peer teachers in the law school setting is the employment of upper-level law students as teaching assistants in the first-year …

Reviews
I shall argue that despite the occasional and charmingly belligerent pose struck by some economists of offering a superior alternative to conventional moral and political theory, economics is covertly parasitic on that theory. I begin in Part I by describing some of the core features of economic analysis and by disclosing my own sentiments about that analysis. The description will be terse, the disclosure partial. My aim is to identify, but certainly not pretend to resolve, some thorny methodological issues that surface in these two books. As for the disclosure, well, even if full disclosure were possible, which I doubt, …

Fifty years ago, a famous book was published that chronicled the sea change then occurring in society. David Reisman's The Lonely Crowdl made us aware of the decline of concern for the common good and the rise of the search for individual meaning. What was going on at that time was one of the most profound cultural changes that has ever taken place in such a short time. It was not just the beginning of the Me Generation but, it turned out, the beginning of the Me Culture, which continues to this day.
There Is A Lot To Be Repaired Before We Get To Reparations: A Critique Of The Underlying Issues Of Race That Impact The Fate Of African American Reparations, Art Alcausin Hall
There Is A Lot To Be Repaired Before We Get To Reparations: A Critique Of The Underlying Issues Of Race That Impact The Fate Of African American Reparations, Art Alcausin Hall
The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice
Reparations are vital to enfranchise a group historically denied access to the opportunities required to enjoy the civil and political rights every United States citizen possesses. However, before African Americans will receive reparations, underlying issues of race must be resolved. The United States has provided reparations for some domestic groups, as well as support for at least one international group. Unfortunately, neither the Supreme Court, nor Congress seems willing to grant the same relief to African Americans. Because of this, outside of small settings and academic arenas, little debate has occurred. The resulting stalemate reveals underlying problems that stem from …
