Critical Connections: Meaningful Mentoring Relationships Between Women Doctoral Students And Their Dissertation Chairpersons., Dawn Deann Wallace

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this research is to explore meaningful mentoring relationships between women doctoral students and their advisors. Specifically, this study examines how graduate women and their advisors navigate and perceive their mentoring relationships during the doctoral program of study. Although research in higher education has addressed the lived experiences of women doctoral students, few have examined the doctoral student/advisor mentoring dynamic from both the student and advisor perspectives. This study provides an understanding of the mentoring experiences of women doctoral students and advisors through qualitative conversation. The participants in the study are 6 women post-doctoral students and their advisors, …

Analysis Of The Relationship Between Student Satisfaction And Student Perception Of Interaction In A Compressed Video Setting, Monty E. Sullivan

Doctoral Dissertations

This study used subjects participating in courses offered via the statewide Louisiana Compressed Video Network for the purpose of analyzing the relationship between student perception of interaction and student satisfaction. A correlation analysis was used to determine the relationship between student perception of interaction (sixteen interaction directionalities) and student course satisfaction (including instructional, technical, and overall satisfaction). Data were collected using the Compressed Video Student Perception of Interaction Scale and the Compressed Video Course Student Satisfaction Scale. The nine correlations used to answer the nine research questions resulted in a considerable number of significant correlations. The data generally indicated that …

Graduate Record 2000: The Future Is Now., Southwestern Oklahoma State University Jan 2000

Graduate Record 2000: The Future Is Now., Southwestern Oklahoma State University

SWOSU Yearbooks

We waited for the world to end… It didn't happen. We watched the skies for catastrophic or miraculous events. The sky was empty. As the clock struck midnight on December 31, 1999, we were ready for whatever the world was going to throw our way. And the world balked. After months, even years, of weathering predictions of disaster and chaos descending with the advent of Year 2000, we got nothing. The worried analysts who said computers around the world would crash just looked like fools. The doomsday predictors didn't even have good excuses as to why nothing happened.

So we …

Rwanda, Burundi, And Their "Ethnic" Conflicts, Stephen B. Isabirye, Kooros M. Mahmoudi Jan 2000

Rwanda, Burundi, And Their "Ethnic" Conflicts, Stephen B. Isabirye, Kooros M. Mahmoudi

Ethnic Studies Review

This paper demonstrably dispels the assumption that ethnic conflict in Rwanda and Burundi is a chronic endemic phenomenon. It emphasizes the consolidation of the caste system during the colonial era, intra regional disparities within the two communities, high population densities, very weak economic bases, poverty, and international interference as some of the cardinal dynamics behind the current deadly contentions within the two states. An analysis behind the genocidal tendencies in the two countries is well illustrated, with special emphasis on the Rwandese tragedy of 1994 as well as its parallels and divergences with the Nazi Holocaust.

[Review Of] America Rodriguez. Making Latino News: Race, Language, Class, M. L. (Tony) Miranda

Ethnic Studies Review

This is an excellent book. In the writing of this edition the author has left little to be criticized. The only criticism that could be made is that most of her analysis focuses on Latino media in Los Angeles and Miami and glosses over other U.S. cities with large Latino populations, however she provides valid reasons for this.

From Helplessness To Hope: The Seminal Career Of Martin Seligman, S. F. Maier, C. Peterson, Barry Schwartz

Psychology Faculty Works

Provides a background to the history of research on learned helplessness and learned optimism, as well as M. Seligman's own involvement in these areas. The development of research in this area also illustrates two other important lessons in how science actually proceeds. First, it is often difficult to predict at the outset where research will lead. Work on learned helplessness began in the animal laboratory and for several years was directed at deep theoretical issues in the psychology of learning and not at depression, academic achievement, and other significant human phenomenon. And second, the history of learned helplessness research demonstrates …

Self-Mutilation : Using Pain To Cope, Wendy S. Cook Jan 2000

Self-Mutilation : Using Pain To Cope, Wendy S. Cook

Graduate Research Papers

Self-mutilation is a serious mental and physical health problem that is often under-reported and misdiagnosed. The mutilation is a reaction to negative internal feelings, such as despair, anxiety, anger, or cognitive constriction. The goal of the self-mutilation is relief from emotional pain by using physical pain. The self-mutilator has low self-esteem, bouts of depression, difficulty forming intimate relationships, and usually suffered some type of trauma such as physical or sexual abuse. Pharmacological treatment for the self-mutilator has been experimental but has not been well researched. However, research seemed to indicate that individual and group therapy, specifically cognitive-behavioral therapy, is helpful …

Men As Supportive Partners In Reproductive Health: Moving From Rhetoric To Reality, Saraswati Raju, Ann Leonard Jan 2000

Men As Supportive Partners In Reproductive Health: Moving From Rhetoric To Reality, Saraswati Raju, Ann Leonard

Reproductive Health

This book builds on presentations of the Workshop on Men as Supportive Partners in Reproductive and Sexual Health held in Kathmandu, Nepal, in 1998. By analyzing the experiences of nongovernmental organizations across India, this publication reviews important concerns that should inform the discourse on male partnership. The previous views of reaching men as contraceptive users and removing them as impediments to women’s efforts to control fertility are too limited. The argument is not whether men and women should use family planning, but rather the extent to which men can become supportive of women’s reproductive and sexual rights and actively take …

Sexual And Reproductive Health And Health Sector Reform In Latin America And The Caribbean: Challenges And Opportunities, Ana Langer, Gustavo Nigenda, Sandra G. Garcia, Rosario Valdez, Emanuel Orozco, Jennifer Catino Jan 2000

Sexual And Reproductive Health And Health Sector Reform In Latin America And The Caribbean: Challenges And Opportunities, Ana Langer, Gustavo Nigenda, Sandra G. Garcia, Rosario Valdez, Emanuel Orozco, Jennifer Catino

Reproductive Health

Most countries in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) are at varying stages of a reform process to improve the response capacity of health systems by upgrading the effectiveness and sustainability of programs and services. Changes promoted by the reform focus on priority health needs and underprivileged society groups. Some problems, such as sexual and reproductive health (SRH), can be tackled with cost-effective technologies. Reform projects offer a unique opportunity to reconsider policies, programs, and services aimed at facing the issues encompassed in the term SRH. Nonetheless, the formulation of a strategy and the identification of concrete measures represent a …

Disease Prevention And The Genetic Revolution: Defining A Parental Right To Protect The Bodily Integrity Of Future Children, Megan Anne Jellinek Jan 2000

Disease Prevention And The Genetic Revolution: Defining A Parental Right To Protect The Bodily Integrity Of Future Children, Megan Anne Jellinek

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

Recent advances in genetic and reproductive technology broaden the capacity of parents to make crucial life decisions for their children. In light of the current technological revolution, the scope of parental decision making seems to reach into the realm of embryonic screening and genetic selection. But can embryos be considered children? While labeling embryos as potential children might offer some protections for parents who wish to screen out harmful diseases, the label poses a serious threat to women's somewhat tenuous abortion rights. How then can parental autonomy rights and abortion rights coexist? Is there a constitutional test that protects both …

Not In My Womb: Compelled Prenatal Genetic Testing, Wendy E. Roop Jan 2000

Not In My Womb: Compelled Prenatal Genetic Testing, Wendy E. Roop

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

Rapid advances in genetic technology in recent years have profoundly affected prenatal care. What once seemed like science fiction is today a reality. Currently, physicians routinely offer prenatal testing for genetically linked diseases. In utero fetal surgery and genetic treatment is fast becoming widely available. This evolution in prenatal care has quickly outpaced corresponding legal developments, and raised difficult questions as to when prenatal genetic testing is appropriate and to what extend the state should be involved. Statutorily mandated neonatal screening and court ordered caesareans suggest a precedent upon which a woman might be compelled to undergo prenatal genetic testing. …

Bad Girls And Good Sports: Some Reflections On Violent Female Juvenile Delinquents, Title Ix &(And) The Promise Of Girl Power, Cheryl Hanna Jan 2000

Bad Girls And Good Sports: Some Reflections On Violent Female Juvenile Delinquents, Title Ix &(And) The Promise Of Girl Power, Cheryl Hanna

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

In recent years, the number of female juvenile offenders has been increasing at a faster pace than that of their male counterparts. This Article explores the link between criminality and competition among women. Specifically, it examines the role that involvement in organized sports, or conversely, lack of competition, plays in the development of criminal behavior. Part I addresses the theme of female competition, violence, and sports, and draws conclusions from secondary interdisciplinary research and conversations with incarcerated juvenile females. Part II focuses upon Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 and suggests that the rationale behind gender equity in …

Juvenile Curfews And Fundamental Rights Methodology, Calvin Massey Jan 2000

Juvenile Curfews And Fundamental Rights Methodology, Calvin Massey

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

A spate of cases in the federal courts of appeals has produced sharply divergent views upon the constitutionality of municipal laws establishing a nocturnal curfew for juveniles. The principal disagreement among the circuits concerns the appropriate level of scrutiny to be applied to such laws. Professor Massey canvasses the cases and comments on what these cases may tell us about the methodology of determining fundamental rights for due process purposes. As is often true of substantive due process issues, the dispute is really about the level of generality with which the putative fundamental right ought to be stated. Professor Massey …
