Existential Mental Health Implications For Kin-Caregivers Of Alzheimer's Victims, Brock K. Knoll

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this paper is to briefly outline assessment and progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in afflicted individuals (i.e., care recipients [CRs]) and review relevant research concerning the effects of AD progression on caregivers (CGs) as they care for loved ones. With this background, consideration will be made of how these findings suggest relevant tenets of Existential therapy. Saint Benedict’s Monastery Books

In With Lamps Burning, Sister Grace McDonald traced the growth of Saint Benedict’s Monastery from its establishment in Minnesota in 1857 to its centennial in 1957. It is the purpose of this sequel to capture the exciting and often troublesome challenges that faced this community in the last half of the twentieth century. It is a story of moving from a stable and predictable era to an explosive era of expanded knowledge, information, and communications that resulted in irreversible societal changes effected by such grassroots movements as civil rights, women’s rights, and environmental concerns, and by a Christian religious …

Service-Learning As A Tool For Enhancing Student Outcomes In A College-Level Lecture Course, Amy Strage Jan 2000

Service-Learning As A Tool For Enhancing Student Outcomes In A College-Level Lecture Course, Amy Strage

Faculty Publications

This article reports on the effects of infusing a 20-hour per semester service-learning requirement into a large Introductory Child Development course. Analyses of student outcomes on course assignments revealed that the 166 students in the service-learning cohorts (2 classes) out-performed the 309 students who took the course during the three semesters prior to the introduction of the service-learning requirement. The advantage for the service-learning students appeared to stem primarily from stronger performance on narrative assessments (midterm and take-home final essays), and appeared to manifest itself only later in the semester. Analyses of students’ journals confirmed that students reflected thoughtfully about …

This research studied the effects of childhood sexual abuse on substance use in adolescent females. Eighty females from The Cherry Hill Shelter located in Daniels, West Virginia were involved in the research. This research involved a between-subjects random design. The data was analyzed using the chi-square technique. Race, history of sexual abuse, history of substance use, and residence were involved in the analysis. The Stroop Color Word Test And Learning Disabilities, Nathan E. Arnett

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This Thesis study critically explored the feasibility of utilizing the Stroop Color Word test as a psychological instrument to aid in the determination of learning disabilities (LD) in children aged nine to sixteen years old. Children with a previous diagnosis of LD were sought out for the experimental group by participating graduate students and, when confirmed by personal administration of intelligence and achievement tests, were administered a battery of nine neuropsychological instruments. A comparison was made with a control group of children with the same age and geographical background on the four different Stroop variables: the Word, Color, Color-Word, and …

The Power Of Codification In Latin America: Simón Bolívar And The Code Napoléon, M C. Mirow Jan 2000

The Power Of Codification In Latin America: Simón Bolívar And The Code Napoléon, M C. Mirow

Faculty Publications

Codification can be an effective means to centralize and to consolidate state power. The use of codification in this manner runs against the commonly perceived notion that it promotes republican and egalitarian values. As Simon Bolivar's dictatorship quickly crumbled around him, he turned to codification based on the Code Napoleon as part of an attempt to unify Gran Colombia. Factors leading him to this undertaking and source were the need for legal reform, his emulation of Napoleon, his exposure to the works of Jeremy Bentham, and, speculatively, the influence of Andres Bello. Boivar's attempt at codification was not to complete …

Variables And Risk Factors In Day Care Settings, Ruth B. Schumacher Ph.D., Rebecca S. Carlson B.M. Jan 2000

Variables And Risk Factors In Day Care Settings, Ruth B. Schumacher Ph.D., Rebecca S. Carlson B.M.

Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education

Objective: This article was developed to identify the variables associated with abuse of children in day care centers and homes, and to specify risk factors to guide professionals and parents.

Method: The literature regarding child abuse [physical (PA), sexual (SA), and ritual (RA)] was reviewed, with emphasis on identification of variables associated with victims, perpetrators, and settings. Three factors increased the complexity of the review: (1) Differences in definition and categorization complicated study comparison. (2) Emotional tone affected some reviewers' definitions, methodology, and conclusions. (3) Some aspects of child abuse in day care homes and centers have not been well …
