Univercity News (2000-04-03)

UniverCity News, 1998-2001

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Modern Parents And Postmodern Adolescents Conflicts And Solutions: A Theoretical Model, Benjamin R. Dobbeck Apr 2000

Modern Parents And Postmodern Adolescents Conflicts And Solutions: A Theoretical Model, Benjamin R. Dobbeck

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

The past 30 years has witnessed a dramatic shift in worldview from [he modern m the postmodern. This can be seen everyday in an, architecture, teaching, music- virtually any expressive medium and recent philosophy. The underpinnings for the postmodern shift in culture revolve around 1.hc Lack of absolutes, non-representative language, a new tolerance and diversity for different ideas and beliefs, and a belief that individuals create their own reality in the social context of community. The family is not immune to these culture shifts and is reflecting them in many ways. Parents of the modem era, the era defined by …

A Controlled Investigation Of Female Migraineurs' Psychological And Physiological Reactivity To Stress During Two Phases Of The Menstrual Cycle., Tricia Cook Myers Apr 2000

A Controlled Investigation Of Female Migraineurs' Psychological And Physiological Reactivity To Stress During Two Phases Of The Menstrual Cycle., Tricia Cook Myers

Theses and Dissertations

Empirical evidence supports the hypothesis that migraine headache activity can covary with psychological stress and often with phases of a woman's menstrual cycle. However, the specific parameters of the relationships between migraines, stress, and menstrual cycle variations are not well understood. It has been suggested that stress may interact with hormonal fluctuations associated with a woman's menstrual cycle to impact her headache activity. The present study examined the physiological and psychological reactivity of 32 female participants (17 controls, 15 migraineurs) in response to a laboratory speech stressor on two separate occasions corresponding to menses and the early luteal phase of …

Evaluation Of Selected Scales Of The Revised Neo Personality Inventory (Neo Pi-R) And The State -Trait Anger Expression Inventory (Staxi) With A College Student Population., John Raeburn Reid Apr 2000

Evaluation Of Selected Scales Of The Revised Neo Personality Inventory (Neo Pi-R) And The State -Trait Anger Expression Inventory (Staxi) With A College Student Population., John Raeburn Reid

Theses and Dissertations

It has been noted that some individuals seem to be chronically angry and hostile but experience little dysfunction in their lives because of that anger. On the other hand, other individuals experience high levels of anger around certain stimuli, experience dysfunction, and display problematic behaviors. Further, if an anger assessment is indicated and one of two such assessing instruments must be chosen, it would seem to be important to know which is most appropriate. In this study dimensional anger is investigated through the use of the Revised Neo Personality Inventory (NEO PI-R) and The State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory (STAXI). Selected …

A Longitudinal Measure Of The Perceptual Impact Of A Cultural Diversity Teaching Practicum On The Interpersonal Competency Of Student Teachers, Lloyd C. Bell

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the longitudinal effect of a planned in-school practicum experience addressing cultural diversity on the self perception of student teachers regarding their interpersonal competency in such situations. Subjects of the study were eighteen student teachers of agricultural education and six student teachers of family and consumer science enrolled in the Colleges of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, and Human Resources and Family Sciences respectively. Evaluation was accomplished through the administration of a multi-cultural attitudinal inventory to all subjects prior to, immediately after, and at least one year after the experience. Development And Construct Validity Of Scores On The Community Service Attitudes Scale, Ann Harris Shiarella, Anne M. Mccarthy, Mary L. Tucker Apr 2000

Development And Construct Validity Of Scores On The Community Service Attitudes Scale, Ann Harris Shiarella, Anne M. Mccarthy, Mary L. Tucker

Evaluation/Reflection

This study reports the multistage development of the Community Service Attitudes Scale (CSAS), an instrument for measuring college students' attitudes about community service. The CSAS was developed based on Schwartz's helping behavior model. Scores on the scales of the CSAS yielded strong reliability evidence (coefficient alphas ranging from .72 to .93). Principal components analysis yielded results consistent with the Schwartz model. In addition, the CSAS scale scores were positively correlated with gender, college major, community service experience, and intentions to engage in community service. The CSAS will be useful to researchers for conducting further research on the effects of service …

Using The Levels Of Family Involvement Model With Religious Professionals, Dale R. Hawley, Carla M. Dahl Apr 2000

Using The Levels Of Family Involvement Model With Religious Professionals, Dale R. Hawley, Carla M. Dahl

Faculty Publications

Serving as a religious professional is a complex task with a wide variety of demands and responsibilities. This variety contributes to a professional identity that requires the fulfillment of a number of roles. The Levels of Family Involvement (LFI) model (W. J. Doherty, 1995) offers a structure for helping clergy ascertain which roles may be most beneficial to a family in a given set of circumstances, as well as which roles are beyond their training and mission. The LFI is offered as a guideline for helping clergy select modes of intervention and identify areas for personal and professional development. Case …
