Paper Session Iii-C - A Portable Mba Guide To The Commercialization Of Space, Robert N. Mcgrath Ph.D.

Space Congress® Proceedings

This paper adopts reputable analytical techniques for identifying near and long term strategic success factors in the space telecommunications industry. Main conclusions of an industry analysis point to leverage attainable through moving quickly and massively, establishing large market share and production volumes, and getting unit costs down. However, limitations in the efficiency of launch vehicles, and the capacity of the global launch infrastructure, will continue to pace progress. It is then proffered that launch costs per pound might not be the best strategic metric of progress; rather, that more strategically important cost-reduction opportunities might lie in improving the overall characteristics …

“The Way Of The Scientist Deepens Beauty By Increasing Understanding”: Teaching Physics As An Aesthetic Form, Claudine Indigo Kavanagh

Dissertations and Theses

Educators have struggled to find an appropriate and efficacious method to engage students of science in their classrooms and lecture halls, This investigation presents a theoretical foundation for the use of aesthetic criteria when teaching physics in high school or undergraduate settings and suggests that this may be an effective learning tool. The relationship between science aesthetics and science literacy is pursued here. Included in this study are discussions of the applications of aesthetic judgement by theoretical physicists in the 20th century and and methods for bringing a dialogue concerning natural philosophy and beauty in the science classroom. Discourse Analysis: Backchanneling Behavior Of Advanced Speakers Of English/Japanese As A Second/Foreign Language, Keiko Ikeda

Dissertations and Theses

When a Japanese speaker or an American English speaker is engaged in an interaction in their second/foreign language (L2), they have choices in terms of language performance. They can maintain their behavior as what is conventional in their own first language/culture, what is expected in the partner's first language/culture, or what is believed to be the appropriate language behavior in the language in use (L2).

In this current study, backchanneling behavior is chosen to be one socio-pragmatic behavior that can be very different depending on language/culture. Data were collected in telephone conversations from a total of four listeners, all advanced …

Paper Session Ii-B - A Strategy For The Initial Wetting Of A Plant Cultivation Unit In Space, Howard G. Levine, Kristie Louie, Oscar Monje

Space Congress® Proceedings

NASA seeks to utilize plants to recycle air, water, wastes, provide food and contribute to the psychological well being of the crew during prolonged space flight missions. We believe that the provision of adequate levels of water (without causing water logging) and oxygen to the root zone are the most crucial components holding back major advancements in this area. As part of the Microgravity Plant Nutrient Experiment (MPNE-02) space flight investigation, the plant growth hardware will be launched in an unpowered, dry condition and initiated by the crew on-orbit. We report here on preliminary efforts at developing a strategy for …
