Whose Turn Is It Anyway : The Impact Of Job Rotation On The Reduction Of Cumulative Trauma Disorders, Francesco Dimiceli Jr. May 2000

Whose Turn Is It Anyway : The Impact Of Job Rotation On The Reduction Of Cumulative Trauma Disorders, Francesco Dimiceli Jr.

Theses

In today's fast-paced world, repetitive activity on the job has become very demanding. Many workers are suffering from injuries known as cumulative trauma disorders (CTDs). Job rotation can be an effective and powerful tool when seeking to minimize CTDs by allowing workers to experience different activities, thereby distributing the physical demands on the workers' bodies.

A case study was conducted on a northwestern New York manufacturing facility to identify the presence of excessive work stressors and to formulate potential corrective actions, including an analysis of their current job rotation system. The jobs were evaluated using the Rapid Upper Limb Assessment. …

A Study Of The Parameters And Stipulations Involved In The Design Of Prosthetic Limb Socket Liners, Sally F. Shady May 2000

A Study Of The Parameters And Stipulations Involved In The Design Of Prosthetic Limb Socket Liners, Sally F. Shady

Theses

The objective of this thesis is to illustrate the parameters that define and characterize the elements necessary for an optimal prosthetic socket interface design. Previous studies have revealed that the industry is manufacturing materials that are causing irregularities in gait patterns and causing major discomfort for transtibial amputees. As a result, chances for recovery and rehabilitation of many patients have been greatly reduced.

This study has indicated that the success of a socket liner depends on quantitative and qualitative factors that assess the overall efficacy of an artificial limb. Quantitative analysis is observed through calculations and deviations in gait cycles, …

Mathematics Achievement By Immigrant Children: A Comparison Of Five English-Speaking Countries, Gary G. Huang May 2000

Mathematics Achievement By Immigrant Children: A Comparison Of Five English-Speaking Countries, Gary G. Huang

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

In this study, I examined academic achievement of immigrant children in the United States, Canada, England, Australia, and New Zealand. Analyzing data from the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), I gauged the performance gaps relating to the generation of immigration and the home language background. I found immigrant children's math and science achievement to be lower than the others only in England, the U.S., and Canada. Non-English language background was found in each country to relate to poor math and science learning and this disadvantage was stronger among native-born children—presumably children of indigenous groups—than among immigrant children. I …

Fort, Da: The World Of Play, Kevin Marc Ginger May 2000

Fort, Da: The World Of Play, Kevin Marc Ginger

Dissertations and Theses

The theoretical and contextual placement of my work is informed by child development psychology. The intention is to evoke and analyze what children do, not to imitate. My use of faux fur, comforting blankets and the form of play balls all function to create objects and environments that lend themselves to absurdity, humor, and of course child-like play.

"fort, da" is titled in spirit from Sigmund Freud's observation of a child throwing a toy with an accompanying statement fort, German for "gone." The child then delights in retrieving the object while exclaiming da or "here." The anxiety …

Prevalence Of Physical And Psychological Abuse In Adolescent Dating Relationships In A Suburban High School, Stacy L. Johnson May 2000

Prevalence Of Physical And Psychological Abuse In Adolescent Dating Relationships In A Suburban High School, Stacy L. Johnson

Theses and Graduate Projects

The purpose of this study is to measure the prevalence of violence in dating relationships in a suburban high school. Although dating violence is commonly considered male to female aggression, the research reviewed in this study indicates that girls are perpetrators more often than boys are. The Revised Conflict Tactics Scale was administered to tenth and twelfth grade students at a suburban high school. There were 126 surveys distributed and 12 were returned. The findings show that 84% of the students admitted to at least one violent incident with their dating partner in the past year. The results of this …

On Communicative Competence: Its Nature And Origin, Mary Lou Emerson May 2000

On Communicative Competence: Its Nature And Origin, Mary Lou Emerson

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to trace the lineage of the term communicative competence (CC) and to provide a framework for understanding the term CC, a controversial term introduced by Hymes (1972). This pager argues that the term CC is only meaningful if it includes competence in the same sense as Chomsky (1980) defines it--underlying knowledge of the rules of language severed from ability. Although Chomsky discusses competence in terms of grammar, he suggests that there may be underlying knowledge of language use-pragmatic competence. In the end, I will attempt to demonstrate the possibility that there is a competence …
