Male Coercive Sexual Behavior As A Function Of Male Resource-Potential And Respondent Gender., Christy D. Wolfe Dec 2000

Male Coercive Sexual Behavior As A Function Of Male Resource-Potential And Respondent Gender., Christy D. Wolfe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study examined whether the resource-potential (RP) of a male dater (i.e., potential financial success and status) and/or respondent gender related to attitudes toward coercive sexual behavior by the male. Participants (59 males and 82 females) read a hypothetical dating scenario in which a heterosexual couple went out for dinner and then returned to the female’s apartment to watch a movie. The RP of the male dater was set at high and low. Following the scenario, rating scales posing increasing levels of coercive sexual behavior (a sexual advance, verbal persuasion, and physical coercion) were presented. The participants rated the …

Comparative Literature As Textual Anthropology, Antony Tatlow Dec 2000

Comparative Literature As Textual Anthropology, Antony Tatlow

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article, "Comparative Literature as Textual Anthropology," Antony Tatlow proposes textual anthropology as a critic's approach in the comparative study of literature. If anthropology is "behavioural hermeneutics" (Clifford Geertz) with the implication of self-reflexivity, the anthropologist will be disposed to fashion in the object of attention what is neglected and that can therefore be described as the unconscious of his/her own culture. In an application of his framework, Tatlow relates totemic and utopian thought through the use of animal signs. In his article, Tatlow shows how cultural demands both fashion the ethnographer-critic and select the perspectives he/she must transcend. …

Faint Radio Sources And Star Formation History, Deborah B. Haarsma, R. B. Partridge, R. A. Windhorst, E. A. Richards Dec 2000

Faint Radio Sources And Star Formation History, Deborah B. Haarsma, R. B. Partridge, R. A. Windhorst, E. A. Richards

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

The centimeter-wave luminosity of local radio galaxies correlates well with their star formation rate. We extend this correlation to surveys of high-redshift radio sources to estimate the global star formation history. The star formation rate found from radio observations needs no correction for dust obscuration, unlike the values calculated from optical and ultraviolet data. Three deep radio surveys have provided catalogs of sources with nearly complete optical identifications and nearly 60% complete spectroscopic redshifts: the Hubble Deep Field and Flanking Fields at 12h + 62°, the SSA13 field at 13h + 42°, and the V15 field at 14h + 52°. …

How To Be Critical, Stephen M. Feldman Dec 2000

How To Be Critical, Stephen M. Feldman

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Many opponents of critical legal thought assert that it is easy to be critical but hard to be constructive. From this perspective, critical legal activity is simple, while traditional theory is difficult. Feldman argues otherwise. Hans-Georg Gadamer's emphasis on the role and power of tradition in the hermeneutic process suggests how tradition forcefully constrains us. Our prejudices, derived from our communal traditions, limit what we can understand and perceive. Thus, to perform critical activity proves often to be a formidable challenge. It requires the writer somehow to disrupt the reader's basic and deep-seated assumptions, assumptions that typically emerge from a …

Identification And Characterization Of Zinc-Responsive Genes In Pseudomonas Fluorescens, Thomas L. Wilson Dec 2000

Identification And Characterization Of Zinc-Responsive Genes In Pseudomonas Fluorescens, Thomas L. Wilson

Masters Theses

Genes responsive to elevated concentrations of zinc were identified via transposon mutagenesis in the common soil bacterium, Pseudomonas fluorescens ATCC13525. Some of these genes were essential to maintain metal homeostasis in the bacterial cell. DNA sequences of the transposon-tagged genes were determined by DNA sequencing of arbitrary PCR products. DNA sequence analysis indicated that one gene was similar to P-type ATPases responsible for transporting metal ions out of the cell. The corresponding mutant was sensitive to zinc, cadmium, and lead indicating that this gene may be responsible for defending Pseudomonas fluorescens against these metal ions. Four zinc-induced genes shared similarity …

Do Safety Observers Perform More Safely As A Result Of Conducting Observations?, Alicia M. Alvero Dec 2000

Do Safety Observers Perform More Safely As A Result Of Conducting Observations?, Alicia M. Alvero

Masters Theses

Behavior-based safety (BBS) is an effective approach to improving safety within organizations, and has been implemented across a wide variety of settings. The two major components of BBS are the observation process and the delivery of feedback. Literature on feedback is abundant, but experimentation and scientific evidence on effects of the observation process are nonexistent. Typically, supervisors or employees involved in BBS implementations conduct observations of other employees' behavior, but the effects of conducting observations on an observer's safety performance is not known. The present study was a first attempt at assessing these effects. A multiple baseline counterbalanced across two …

The Roles Of Ca2+ And Camp In The Nematocyst Discharge Of The Sea Anemone Tentacle, Veysel Haktan Ozacmak Dec 2000

The Roles Of Ca2+ And Camp In The Nematocyst Discharge Of The Sea Anemone Tentacle, Veysel Haktan Ozacmak

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The phylum Cnidarians are aquatic animals, including jellyfish, hydra, sea anemones, and corals. They are the simplest metazoans having a nervous system and are diploblastic. Cnidarians are obligate predators that capture prey using specialized stinging cells called cnidocytes. The cnidocyte contains a nematocyst, which is a capsule containing an inverted, hollow tubule. Prey contacting the tentacle triggers the nematocyst tubule to rapidly evert; a process called discharge. The everting tubule penetrates and envenomates the prey, which is carried to the mouth by tentacle movements.

Generally both chemical and mechanical stimuli are needed to trigger discharge. The cnidocytes, in sea anemones, …

Finite-Aperture Wire Grid Polarizers, Michael A. Jensen, Gregory P. Nordin Dec 2000

Finite-Aperture Wire Grid Polarizers, Michael A. Jensen, Gregory P. Nordin

Faculty Publications

The transmission characteristics of wire grid polarizers fabricated in finite apertures are investigated by using a three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain formulation. Specifically, the optical transmissivity and extinction ratio are characterized for a wide variety of geometrical parameters including aperture size in both dimensions, conducting wire fill factor, and polarizer thickness. A dispersive material model is used to investigate the performance of polarizers fabricated by using realistic metals at infrared wavelengths. The results indicate that the aperture dimension significantly impacts the polarizer transmission behavior and that the extinction of the unwanted polarization is often limited by depolarizing scattering that is due to …

Direct Generation Of Optical Diffractive Elements In Perfluorocyclobutane (Pfcb) Polymers By Soft Lithography, Gregory P. Nordin, J. Ballato, P. C. Deguzman, S. Foulger, H. Shah, D. Smith Dec 2000

Direct Generation Of Optical Diffractive Elements In Perfluorocyclobutane (Pfcb) Polymers By Soft Lithography, Gregory P. Nordin, J. Ballato, P. C. Deguzman, S. Foulger, H. Shah, D. Smith

Faculty Publications

Optically diffractive line gratings with 0.58- m feature sizes have been generated in 100- m perfluorocyclobutane (PFCB) polymer films by direct micromolding using only a silicon master. Strong reflectivities from the green to red portions of the visible spectrum, depending on incident beam angle, were observed with 3 dB bandwidths of approximately 30 nm. This negative mold-free technique permits, for the first time to our knowledge, feature reproduction at submicrometer size scales, eliminates several steps from conventional soft lithographic methods, and marks itself as a practical means for rapidly generating planar photonic structures that operate spectrally in the visible and …

Eustasy Determination From Borehole Data, Onshore New Jersey: New Boreholes And New Porosity Estimates, William Alan Van Sickel Dec 2000

Eustasy Determination From Borehole Data, Onshore New Jersey: New Boreholes And New Porosity Estimates, William Alan Van Sickel

Masters Theses

Backstripping analysis of detailed stratigraphic data from the Bass River and Ancora boreholes on the New Jersey Coastal Plain (Ocean Drilling Project Leg 17 4AX) was conducted to test and refine previous eustatic estimates (Kominz et al., 1998) and provide new Upper Cretaceous estimates. Porositydepth relationships required by the backstripping method were estimated to supplement those from the Cost B-2 well (Rhodehamel, 1977). Sand and mud porosity at shallow depths (<500 m) obtained here are higher than was seen at the Cost B-2 well.

The Bass River and Ancora boreholes targeted older sequences of the Upper Cretaceous to Paleocene. This new data allow for more accurate estimate of the magnitude of long-term sea-level …

Reductive Photocarboxylation Of Aromatic Hydrocarbons In Supercritical Co2: A Mechanistic Investigation, Jingsheng Zhang Dec 2000

Reductive Photocarboxylation Of Aromatic Hydrocarbons In Supercritical Co2: A Mechanistic Investigation, Jingsheng Zhang

Masters Theses

Recent research interest on supercritical CO2 includes the following three important issues: 1) the development of supercritical CO2 as an environmental benign reaction medium and as a viable alternative to hazardous organic solvents, 2) the use of supercritical CO2 as a C1 feedstock for fixation of CO2 and 3) characterization of photoinduced electron transfer reactions under supercritical conditions.

The reductive photocarboxylation of aromatic hydrocarbons such as anthracene and phenanthrene in supercritical CO2, have been chosen for study. Supercritical CO2 was utilized as both a replacement solvent and as a reacting reagent for …

Disinfection Of Dentin By Intracanal Laser Irradiation: An In Vitro Model, Silvia Cristina Mafra Cecchini Dec 2000

Disinfection Of Dentin By Intracanal Laser Irradiation: An In Vitro Model, Silvia Cristina Mafra Cecchini

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A possible cause for root canal failure is the persistence of bacteria that have colonized dentinal tubules. To reduce this risk and, if possible, to also shorten the time consuming endodontic therapy, new equipment and materials are constantly being introduced. The aim of the present investigation was to study the effect of disinfection of dentinal tubules by intracanal laser irradiation using an in vitro model. The groups irradiated by various lasers were compared with calcium hydroxide, a material frequently used as intracanal medication between appointments. Freshly extracted, intact bovine incisors were used. The root cementum was removed and the teeth …

Reconstructing Ancient Egyptian Tombs, Hany Farid

Computer Science Technical Reports

From the pyramids of Giza to the tombs of Thebes (modern Luxor), ancient Egypt's glorious history has produced remarkable architecture. Sadly, the nearly four million yearly tourists have taken a heavy toll on many of these ancient structures. Of particular concern are many of the tombs located opposite to Luxor on the western bank of the Nile. Digital reconstruction of these tombs has the potential to help document and preserve these important historical structures. Photographing and reconstruction of these tombs poses new and unique problems that this paper begins to address. Techniques for removing image distortions, recovering 3-D shape, and …

Defensible Space In East Palo Alto: University And Bay Mixed-Use Development, Thanicha Niyomwan Dec 2000

Defensible Space In East Palo Alto: University And Bay Mixed-Use Development, Thanicha Niyomwan

Master's Projects

University and Bay Mixed-use Development will be planned based mainly on the defensible space concept. The concept of a pedestrian-friendly environment would be a secondaiy concept to be applied to the development plan. Since the defensible space concept deploys residents themselves as the key players to ensure their own security, the success of the proposed development depends on residents. Only when the residents choose to adopt the intended role, the proposed development becomes defensible (Newman, 1975).

Residents’ cooperation plays a vital role not only in this proposed development but also in any neighborhood revitalization. Attempts to save a declining neighborhood …

Convenants, Conditions, And Restrictions: Their Influence On Neighborhood Transitions And Quality Of Life, Mark A. Pecchenino Dec 2000

Convenants, Conditions, And Restrictions: Their Influence On Neighborhood Transitions And Quality Of Life, Mark A. Pecchenino

Master's Projects

Today urban planners have many tools at their disposal to develop, nurture and endorse proper planning techniques in both future urban developments and existing neighborhoods. However, when it comes to existing neighborhood code enforcement many planning departments lack proper funding to efficiently enforce code compliance issues in existing neighborhoods. Financial constraints placed on our urban planning departments, coupled with increasing urban sprawl, make code enforcement of existing neighborhoods difficult and time consuming. Today’s big city planners are investing more time on current issues like rapid growth, affordable housing, water, sewage, traffic congestion, and other pressing infrastructure issues. In general, neighborhood …

Housing Policies In Santa Clara County: Are They Solving The Housing Crisis?, Bryan Briggs Dec 2000

Housing Policies In Santa Clara County: Are They Solving The Housing Crisis?, Bryan Briggs

Master's Projects

Trying to evaluate complex activities involves one in a series of difficult problems that have not yet been solved. It is particularly difficult to deal with public policymaking, which not only is complex, but also involves many values. Nevertheless, we can develop a rigorous approach to analyzing, evaluating, and improving public policymaking if we start by developing explicit criteria and standards that will replace the implicit assumptions, one-sided views, and halo effects we all use for lack of anything better.

Zoning For Artists’ Live/Work Space In San Francisco, Sara Krieger Dec 2000

Zoning For Artists’ Live/Work Space In San Francisco, Sara Krieger

Master's Projects

Since the late 1800s land-use planning in America has existed to separate manufacturing, commercial, residential, and agricultural activities to “encourage orderly management into the building and maintenance of cities. One of the first examples of regulating the location of urban land-use activities occurred in New York City. In 1916 a group of prosperous Fifth Avenue merchants wanted to halt the encroachment of Lower Manhattan garment manufacturers to the Upper East Side. The Fifth Avenue Association claimed that such loft buildings would “ruin the ambiance of the streets for their customers”^ by intruding on the residential neighborhood and impacting the property …

These four families represent approximately 34% of the total flora. Numerous county extensions, as well as rare, threatened, …

Social Climate In The University Social System, Peter L. Groff Dec 2000

Social Climate In The University Social System, Peter L. Groff

Theses and Dissertations

Social climate (campus climate), which is defined as "Equal Opportunity Climate, 1" has been deemed important by recent legislation requiring that federally funded institutions demonstrate a good faith effort to assess "climate" as an ongoing concern. The 1991 Civil Rights Act has expanded the working definition of social climate by including both the atmosphere and the behavior of discrimination. Social climate then becomes a legally recognized dimension of the workplace that is assumed to be a measurable concept, as an organizational level characteristic, that can be measured by individual perceptions and experiences with the social climate. One purpose of this …
