Fast-Floquet Method Of Hingeless-Rotor Trim And Stability Including Comparisons With Experiments And Approximate Methods, Guifa. Ma Jan 2000

Fast-Floquet Method Of Hingeless-Rotor Trim And Stability Including Comparisons With Experiments And Approximate Methods, Guifa. Ma

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The trim and stability of an isolated hingeless rotor in forward flight are predicted for two coning angles with advance ratio, shaft angle and collective pitch variations. These predictions are correlated with measurements from a test model with four soft-inplane, soft-torsion blades. The test was conducted by the U.S. Army Aeroflightdynamics Directorate at Ames. The collective pitch and shaft angle are set prior to each test point, and the rotor is trimmed as follows: the longitudinal and lateral cyclic pitch controls are adjusted through a swashplate to minimize the 1/rev flapping moment at the 12% radial station. The database includes …

Enforcing Budgetary And Legal Compliance In The Government Sector: An Assessment Of Preauditing In The State Of Kuwait, Yousef Mohammad Almutairi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Auditing has become both a vital activity that validates correct operations of an accounting system and is an important tool to measure financial and public accountability. Preauditing implementation in Kuwait since 1994 has been designed to ensure and improve compliance with budgetary laws and regulations by governmental units before budget execution. The purpose of this study is to examine whether compliance has been improved in those governmental units that apply preauditing and to determine the factors that affect compliance with budgetary laws and regulations. The research framework is based on a literature review of governmental auditing, enforcement research, and the …

Frequency-Dependent Characteristics Of Microstrip Transmission Lines, Settapong. Malisuwan Jan 2000

Frequency-Dependent Characteristics Of Microstrip Transmission Lines, Settapong. Malisuwan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This dissertation is concerned with the studies on the frequency-dependent characteristics of microstrip line structures. Relevant considerations are applied to evaluate crosstalk in symmetric, coupled and lossy (dispersive) microstrip transmission lines. The technique adopted supplements the wide-range of semi-empirical expressions available in the literature on the frequency-dependent even- and odd-mode effective dielectric constants as well as the characteristic impedances of coupled microstrip lines. The accuracy of a crosstalk transfer function deduced is verified with theoretical and experimental results. The behavior of crosstalk versus line-spacing, dielectric substrate characteristics, and line-length is analyzed. This study is also extended to address the influence …

Feasibility Study On Using Lonworks Power Line Transceivers For Underwater Communications, Jennifer Cairns Powell Jan 2000

Feasibility Study On Using Lonworks Power Line Transceivers For Underwater Communications, Jennifer Cairns Powell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This project consisted of a feasibility study to ascertain whether or not an inexpensive acoustic modem for an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) could be developed using low cost commercially available products. Our AUV's at Florida Atlantic University currently use LonWorks for their internal control networks, so we have plenty of experience with their parts. The LonWorks Power Line Transceivers are capable of generating a signal that can be sent to a transducer for communication through the water. The PLT-30 Power Line Transceiver generates a direct sequence spread spectrum signal (DSSS) that offers many useful operating features; such as anti-jam, interference …

Flexural Failure Of Curved Sandwich Beams With Implanted Interfacial Debonds, Andrew Maxwell Layne Jan 2000

Flexural Failure Of Curved Sandwich Beams With Implanted Interfacial Debonds, Andrew Maxwell Layne

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Effects of face/core debonding on the structural integrity of curved sandwich beams subjected to opening bending moments has been examined experimentally. Curved beams of glass/polyester faces and PVC H30 foam core were manufactured. Various sizes of debonds were created using thin Teflon sheets inserted at the outer face/core interface during processing. A fixture for testing curved beams in flexure was designed, manufactured and evaluated. Surface strains at the middle of the curve were recorded. Buckling of the debonded face sheet occurred followed by face/core propagation of the debond. Strength reduction of the beams under opening moments due to face/core debonding …

Flame In The Grate: The Kullus Character In A Selection Of Harold Pinter's Early Works, Brian Charles Nudelman Jan 2000

Flame In The Grate: The Kullus Character In A Selection Of Harold Pinter's Early Works, Brian Charles Nudelman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Between the years 1949 and 1955, Harold Pinter was writing not plays, but poems and prose. Three works written during this period are "Kullus," "The Task," and "The Examination." Not only do these works follow chronologically, but also the intricate relationship between the narrator and Kullus established within each seems to continually refer back to a previous work. When read together, with "The Task" central, the three works form a continuing narrative of conflict and personal struggle, and for each to be fully appreciated and understood, one needs that knowledge gained from seeing the progression in relationship that is developed …

Forecasting Foreign Exchange Rates Using Neural Networks, Amit H. Talati Jan 2000

Forecasting Foreign Exchange Rates Using Neural Networks, Amit H. Talati

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Time series is a phenomena which appears in the financial world in various forms. One of the objectives of time series is to forecast the future based on the past. The goal of this thesis is to use foreign exchange time series, and predict its future values and trends using neural networks. The thesis covers background work in this area and discusses the results obtained by other researchers. A neural network is then developed to predict the future values of the USD/GBP and USD/DEM exchange rates. Both single-step and iterated multi-step predictions are considered. The performance of neural networks strongly …

Habitat Suitability And Population Demographics Of The Seagrass, Thalassia Testudinum, In The Northeast Salt Ponds Of Key West, Florida, Cheryl L. Miller Jan 2000

Habitat Suitability And Population Demographics Of The Seagrass, Thalassia Testudinum, In The Northeast Salt Ponds Of Key West, Florida, Cheryl L. Miller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Reconstructive aging techniques were used to construct the age frequency distributions of T. testudinum short shoots in the Salt Ponds of Key West, FL. Median short shoot age was approximately two years. No evidence of sexual reproductive effort was found. A site-specific leaf emergence rate was not used, which may have contributed error in the reconstructive technique. Gradients in salinity, phosphorous availability, community composition, and leaf width were observed along the water flow pathway through the ponds. Populations of short shoots more distal from the tidal source exhibited an older age structure reflecting higher salinity, temperature, and dissolved oxygen stresses. …

From Policy To Practice To Management: A Restorative Justice Framework, Sandra Pavelka O'Brien Jan 2000

From Policy To Practice To Management: A Restorative Justice Framework, Sandra Pavelka O'Brien

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Two distinct models have guided the juvenile justice system during the past century---individual treatment/rehabilitation and retributive justice. While its historical orientation has been individual treatment, in recent years it has become predominately punitive (Bazemore and Day, 1998; Bazemore, 1993). The organizational mission and goals of the juvenile justice system have become internally inconsistent as it tries to satisfy competing goals, such as punishment, treatment, and protection of public safety. Currently, justice professionals have sought to clarify the aims of juvenile justice management and policy. Several possibilities exist for the future of the juvenile justice system. One proposal for the future …

Functional Stabilization Of Unstable Systems, Patrick Stephen Foo Jan 2000

Functional Stabilization Of Unstable Systems, Patrick Stephen Foo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Humans are often faced with tasks that require stabilizing inherently unstable situations. We performed four experiments to explore the nature of functional stabilization. In Experiment 1 participants balanced a pole until a time criterion was reached. The geometry, mass, and characteristic "fall time" of the pole were manipulated. Distributions of timing between pole and hand velocities showed strong action-perception coupling. When actions demonstrated a potential for failure, the period of hand oscillation correlated significantly with the "time to balance" (t bal=theta/theta.), where q is pole angle re: the vertical balance point, but not other quantities such as theta and theta. …

Group-Level Consequences Of Communication About Physical Appearance, Donna Jill Schwartz Jan 2000

Group-Level Consequences Of Communication About Physical Appearance, Donna Jill Schwartz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Recent research has looked at sociocultural standards and social comparison to explain body image disturbances (Thompson, 1996). This study uses Latane's Dynamic Social Impact Theory to explore the emergence of group level consequences of discussing these societal standards of physical appearance. It was hypothesized that there would be more clustering, consolidation, correlation and continued diversity amongst the participants opinions by the end of the five week discussion. These hypotheses were not supported by measures of clustering, consolidation, correlation and continued diversity. These results indicate that Dynamic Social Impact Theory alone may not be useful for studying the consequence of group …

A Qualitative Analysis Of The Socialization Factors Experienced By Induction Phase Physical Education Teachers From One University., Derek Jason Mohr Jan 2000

A Qualitative Analysis Of The Socialization Factors Experienced By Induction Phase Physical Education Teachers From One University., Derek Jason Mohr

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A topic of considerable interest in the educational research community is the process of learning to teach and the role that socialization plays in that process. Numerous educational researchers have focused their attention on examining these processes (e.g., Doyle, 1985; Graham, French, & Woods, 1993; Lawson, 1988; Schempp & Graber, 1992). Recent investigative approaches have attempted to broaden the perspective for viewing and interpreting teacher development, and socialization factors in addition to field experiences and student teaching have been examined (Graham, Hohn, Werner, & Woods, 1993; Widden, Mayer-Smith, & Moon, 1998; Woods & Earls, 1995). The purpose of this study …

Where The Stranger Bides: Resisting America With The Autobiographical Word., Lisa N. Muir Jan 2000

Where The Stranger Bides: Resisting America With The Autobiographical Word., Lisa N. Muir

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The recent republication of the works of Anzia Yezierska and Rose Cohen, as well as the first ever publications of the autobiographies of Bella Spewack and Rachel Cohen, demonstrate the current interest in the autobiographical experiences of turn-of-the-century female immigrant writers. These women were not politicos of the Progressive Era, nor were they literary revolutionaries in the stricter sense of writing against a patriarchal literary environment. Instead, these women pay particular attention to how ethnicity was constructed for them by cultural attitudes existing outside the text. Their autobiographical works confirm for the diverse readers of today that ethnicity is not …

Paradoxical Interventions With Severe Conduct-Disordered Adolescents: Research Of Treatment Effectiveness., Marsha Anne Mills Jan 2000

Paradoxical Interventions With Severe Conduct-Disordered Adolescents: Research Of Treatment Effectiveness., Marsha Anne Mills

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Paradoxical interventions are therapeutic techniques in which the therapist appears to promote the worsening or continuation of the problem rather than its removal. The objective of this treatment is to lessen or eliminate the problematic behavior through the unusual means of encouraging it. Only two previous studies have empirically evaluated these techniques with resistant and defiant youths; those results suggested that paradoxical interventions may be effective with severely conduct-disordered adolescents. This study applied the techniques of symptom scheduling and restraining with three conduct-disordered adolescents residing in a therapeutic group home. The experimental design was a nonconcurrent multiple baseline across participants; …

Disappearing Acts: The State And Violence Against Women In The Twentieth Century, Michelle Fine, Lois Weis Jan 2000

Disappearing Acts: The State And Violence Against Women In The Twentieth Century, Michelle Fine, Lois Weis

Publications and Research

As children we held our breath, our senses filled with the musty smells of elephants, the staccato flashes of twirling plastic flashlights, the terrors of trapeze. With mystery, moustache, and elegance, the magician waved a wand, invited a woman, usually White, seemingly working class, into a box. She disappeared or was cut in half. Applause. Our early introduction to the notion of the sponsored disappearing act. So, too, at the end of the twentieth century, we witness poor and working-class women shoved into spaces too small for human form, no elegance, no wand. And they too disappear. Disappearing from welfare …

Dynamic Behavior Characterization Of Fine Powders Consisting Of A Homogeneous Emulsion, And, Synthesis And Decomposition Of Methane Gas Hydrate: A Reaction Engineering Study., Sridhar Narasimhan Jan 2000

Dynamic Behavior Characterization Of Fine Powders Consisting Of A Homogeneous Emulsion, And, Synthesis And Decomposition Of Methane Gas Hydrate: A Reaction Engineering Study., Sridhar Narasimhan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This work quantitatively characterizes the flow and mixing properties of aerated bulk fine powders between the minimum fluidization and minimum bubbling velocities (Umf < U < Umb). In order to accomplish this characterization, the viscosity of the emulsion phase was measured using the Maxwell’s model for the rheological behavior of complex bodies along with the set of rheological parameters proposed by Kono et al (1994). A unique property of the bulk fine powder called the relaxation time (t) was measured experimentally and this property was combined with another rheological parameter called the plastic deformation coefficient (Y) to give the viscosity of the emulsion phase as m = Yt. SECTION II This work describes the first homogeneous formation and decomposition of methane gas hydrates within several different synthetic sediments by using a highpressure batch reaction system. The pressure of the formation reaction was varied in the range of 6.8 – 13.6 MPa while the temperature was maintained constant at 273.5 K Decomposition of hydrate was accomplished through controlled depressurization starting at a pressure of 2.7 MPa, maintaining the temperature constant at 273.5 K. Overall reaction order, both for the formation and decomposition were also determined.

The Effects Of Supported Employment Level On The Psychosocial Experiences Of Integrated Workers With Mental Retardation., Jennifer L. Schwartz-Mitchell Jan 2000

The Effects Of Supported Employment Level On The Psychosocial Experiences Of Integrated Workers With Mental Retardation., Jennifer L. Schwartz-Mitchell

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Supported employment approaches may have a significant impact on the Psychosocial experiences of workers with mild and moderate mental retardation. The present study examined the influence of supported employment level (i.e., individual vs. group) on the depression, loneliness, and lifestyle satisfaction of employees participating in a vocational rehabilitation program. It was hypothesized that supported employment level differences would be reflected in the dependent variables of depression, loneliness, and lifestyle satisfaction reported by participants (N = 54). Additional predictions were made about relationships between these dependent variables and measures of social support and social skills. Supported employment level differences on depression, …

The Development And Validation Of Science Learning Inventory (Sli): A Conceptual Change Framework., Mehdi Seyedmonir Jan 2000

The Development And Validation Of Science Learning Inventory (Sli): A Conceptual Change Framework., Mehdi Seyedmonir

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A multidimensional theoretical model, Conceptual Change Science Learning (CCSL), was developed based on Standard Model of Conceptual Change and Cognitive Reconstruction of Knowledge Model. The model addresses three main components of science learning, namely the learner's conceptual ecology, the message along with its social context, and the cognitive engagement. A learner's conceptual ecology is organized around three clusters, including epistemological beliefs, existing conceptions, and motivation. Learner's cognitive engagement is represented by a continuum from peripheral processing involving shallow cognitive engagement to central processing involving deep cognitive engagement. Through reciprocal, non-sequential interactions of such constructs, the learners' conceptual change is achieved. …
