Exposure Drafts, Comment Letters, and Statements of Position

The following is a summary of the significant proposed changes to the attestation standards. 1. This proposed SSAE would supersede SSAE Nos. 1 through 9 (a list of these Statements is included in the transmittal letter to this proposal). 2. The body of the attestation standards is codified and organized in AT sections in the AICPA Professional Standards. This proposed SSAE would change the numbering and order of the AT sections. This reorganization and renumbering will be effected with the approval of the new standard. This exposure draft retains the existing AT section numbers. 3. The proposed revision of AT …

Large-Scale Temporal And Spatial Patterns Of Marine Phytoplankton In The North-East Atlantic, Martin Edwards Jan 2000

Large-Scale Temporal And Spatial Patterns Of Marine Phytoplankton In The North-East Atlantic, Martin Edwards

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Phytoplankton constitute the main algal biomass in pelagic ecosystems and, therefore, play a fundamental role in the functioning of the marine trophic web. Information on long-term trends in marine phytoplankton may help to distinguish between biological responses to natural oscillations in climate and global warming, and to evaluate possible regional effects of eutrophication. The aim of this work was to contribute to the general understanding of how phytoplankton are spatio-temporally structured at the large-scale. To achieve this aim, the Continuous Plankton Recorder (CPR) survey data were used to identify the dominant large-scale spatial patterns of phytoplankton in north-western European continental …

The 2-Way Thrashing-Avoidance Cache (Tac): An Efficient Instruction Cache Scheme For Object-Oriented Languages, Yul Chu, M. R. Ito Jan 2000

The 2-Way Thrashing-Avoidance Cache (Tac): An Efficient Instruction Cache Scheme For Object-Oriented Languages, Yul Chu, M. R. Ito

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper presents a new instruction cache scheme: the TAC (Thrashing-Avoidance Cache). A 2-way TAC scheme employs 2-way banks and XOR mapping functions. The main function of the TAC is to place a group of instructions separated by a call instruction into a bank according to the Bank Selection Logic (BSL) and Bank-originated Pseudo-LRU replacement policies (BoPLRU). After the BSL initially selects a bank on an instruction cache miss, the BoPLRU will determine the final bank for updating a cache line as a correction mechanism. These two mechanisms can guarantee that recent groups of instructions exist in each bank safely. …

Why Communication Is Important: A Rationale For The Centrality Of The Study Of Communication, Sherwyn P. Morreale, Michael M. Osborn, Judy C. Pearson Jan 2000

Why Communication Is Important: A Rationale For The Centrality Of The Study Of Communication, Sherwyn P. Morreale, Michael M. Osborn, Judy C. Pearson

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article defends the importance of studying communication. Academic disciplines in higher education are routinely called upon to explain and justify their role in the educational enterprise. Some academic fields such as history and philosophy are more central in the pursuits of liberal arts, while others such as business administration and engineering are more related to career development. The discipline of communication is fairly unique as it crosses these boundaries. As a result, a need exists to provide a rationale for the study of communication. The National Communication Association, in response to requests from communication departments and administrators for evidence …

What Is Good Communication?, Brian H. Spitzberg Jan 2000

What Is Good Communication?, Brian H. Spitzberg

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This articles examines the question: What is good communication? The nature of good communication is both ambiguous and ambivalent. This claim can be taken as a reference to the characteristics that defame good communication, or as a reference to the state of scholarly knowledge about the concept of good communication. On its face, the statement seems clear, and yet, in claiming ambiguity and ambivalence, it is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Such are some of the subtleties of communication itself, and it is such subtleties that require a re-examination of the composition of good communication. The qualifier "good" suggests a nexus of …

Developments In Communication Ethics: The Ethics Commission, Code Of Professional Responsibilities, Credo For Ethical Communication, Kenneth E. Andersen

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article looks at the state of communication ethics study and practice in the U.S. Ethics has always been a dimension of communication theory and practice. But the definition of its role and the awareness of and emphasis given to it varies from communication theorist to theorist and practitioner to practitioner. These variations can be traced from the rhetorical theories and practices of ancient Greece to the present. Similarly, the approach to and emphasis given ethics as an element in communication has varied in the communication field's teaching and research. The academic units historically identified as speech, speech communication, communication …

The Communication Department In A State Of Perpetual Crisis: Discount Store University?, David Ritchie Jan 2000

The Communication Department In A State Of Perpetual Crisis: Discount Store University?, David Ritchie

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article explores the implications of the discount store metaphor as it is commonly used and understood, and considers its implications for how academic departments are led and administered. The metaphor of the discount store is often offered as an implicit criticism of the legislators, trustees and administrators who demand that academic departments justify their curriculum and methods in financial terms. It is also sometimes offered as an implicit criticism of the students and parents who ask about the relevance or usefulness of course content, choose courses and majors with an eye to career and earning potential, complain about the …

Assessing The Perceived Effectiveness Of The Basic Communication Course: An Examination Of The Mass-Lecture Format Versus The Self-Contained Format, Timothy S. Todd, Lou Davidson Tillson, Stephen A. Cox, Barbara K. Malinauskas Jan 2000

Assessing The Perceived Effectiveness Of The Basic Communication Course: An Examination Of The Mass-Lecture Format Versus The Self-Contained Format, Timothy S. Todd, Lou Davidson Tillson, Stephen A. Cox, Barbara K. Malinauskas

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article evaluates the most effective and efficient instructional format for basic communication courses. The results of the analysis lend support to the use of the mass-lecture/laboratory format. Although B. Erikson and D. Strommer indicated that feelings of anonymity, common in the large lecture class, diminished motivation, commitment and personal responsibility of the students, this study did not find similar results. Students indicated, across both instructional formats, comparable perceptions of student motivation, teacher nonverbal immediacy and teacher credibility. It appears that the mass-lecture/laboratory format was perceived by students as being as effective as self-contained sections of basic courses.

Relationships Among Central Administrators, Chairs, And Faculty: Academic Change Agents In Theory And Practice, Mark Hickson Iii Jan 2000

Relationships Among Central Administrators, Chairs, And Faculty: Academic Change Agents In Theory And Practice, Mark Hickson Iii

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article explores the impact of the academic changes in the higher education in the U.S. on the relationship among administrators, chairs and faculty. Times have changed in higher education in the U.S. In the 1960s and 1970s higher education grew rapidly. State and local governments, as well as private donors, willingly and enthusiastically supported higher education. But the Vietnam conflict brought changes in that colleges were often considered the training grounds for protesters as well as escape routes from military conscription. Today it appears that most of heard are requests for raising money not at the president's level nor …

Multimedia As Persuasive Agent: Using Visual Metaphors To Establish The Rhetorical Agenda In A Communication Department Video, Sarah R. Stein Jan 2000

Multimedia As Persuasive Agent: Using Visual Metaphors To Establish The Rhetorical Agenda In A Communication Department Video, Sarah R. Stein

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article emphasizes the significance of computer-mediated communication technologies to communication studies based on a video document made by the communication department of North Carolina State University. The goals for the production of a video included promoting the Communication Department within and outside the university, educating viewers' as to the study of communication and its role in an information society, and advocating implicitly for the benefits of umbrella departments. The development of visual metaphors came as an unexpected by-product of grappling with those three challenges. Making the video highlighted the tension that exists between technological demand and communication imperatives.

Information Utility, Reader Interest, Publication Rating And Student Newspaper Readership, Carolyn Lin Jan 2000

Information Utility, Reader Interest, Publication Rating And Student Newspaper Readership, Carolyn Lin

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article investigates student motivations for reading a college student paper, including evaluations of performance and content preferences. The declining interest in newspaper readership, particularly among college-age readers has attracted concern among scholars in recent years. In a democracy founded on freedom of the press, fewer than 40% of adults today under the age of 30 subscribe to a paper. This suggests that time spent with newspapers continues to decline even as new media use accounts for the bulk of audience leisure.

Principal Succession: Realities Encountered By Successor Principals During The Succession Process, Kenneth Lester Rigdon Jan 2000

Principal Succession: Realities Encountered By Successor Principals During The Succession Process, Kenneth Lester Rigdon

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In order to better understand the realities of principal succession (an interactive sequencing process for changing school administrators) it was the purpose of this study to examine the relationship between four organizational frames (structural, human resource, political, and symbolic) delineated by Bolman and Deal (1997) and three traits noted in the literature as evident during school principal succession (predecessor leave-taking, succession source, and experience). There is little research regarding school principal succession, and concern exists regarding the adequacy of transition practices within organizations. A questionnaire was employed to survey all school principals in the state of Kansas who succeeded during …

Beyond The Smokestack: Environmental Protection In The Service Economy, James Salzman Jan 2000

Beyond The Smokestack: Environmental Protection In The Service Economy, James Salzman

Faculty Scholarship

When our pollution control statutes were drafted in the 1970s, smokestack sources sat squarely in these laws' regulatory cross hairs. Over the past few decades, however, manufacturing's relative importance has declined while the service sector has ascended to a position of dominance in America's economy. Yet consideration of services remains almost entirely absent from environmental law and policy scholarship. In this Article, Professor James Salzman addresses the implications for environmental protection of the service sector's ascent. Commentators have suggested that the ascent of services provides an important path toward sustainable development. In Part I of this Article, Salzman examines the …

Bayesian Reconstruction Of 3d Human Motion From Single-Camera Video, Nicholas Howe, Michael E. Leventon, William T. Freeman Jan 2000

Bayesian Reconstruction Of 3d Human Motion From Single-Camera Video, Nicholas Howe, Michael E. Leventon, William T. Freeman

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

The three-dimensional motion of humans is underdetermined when the observation is limited to a single camera, due to the inherent 3D ambiguity of 2D video. We present a system that reconstructs the 3D motion of human subjects from single-camera video, relying on prior knowledge about human motion, learned from training data, to resolve those ambiguities. After initialization in 2D, the tracking and 3D reconstruction is automatic; we show results for several video sequences. The results show the power of treating 3D body tracking as an inference problem.

Using Artificial Queries To Evaluate Image Retrieval, Nicholas Howe Jan 2000

Using Artificial Queries To Evaluate Image Retrieval, Nicholas Howe

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

This paper addresses the evaluation and comparison of algorithms for generalized image retrieval. The forms of evaluation currently in vogue are not calibrated with each other and thus do not allow the comparison of results reported by different research groups. We address the problem by proposing a class of tests that are algorithmically defined and relatively independent of the image test set. The proposed tests can be tailored to investigate retrieval performance under specific sets of adverse conditions, allowing additional insight into the strengths and weaknesses of different retrieval mechanisms.

Integrating Color, Texture, And Geometry For Image Retrieval, Nicholas Howe, Daniel P. Huttenlocher Jan 2000

Integrating Color, Texture, And Geometry For Image Retrieval, Nicholas Howe, Daniel P. Huttenlocher

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

This paper examines the problem of image retrieval from large, heterogeneous image databases. We present a technique that fulfills several needs identified by surveying recent research in the field. This technique fairly integrates a diverse and expandable set of image properties (for example, color, texture, and location) in a retrieval framework, and allows end-users substantial control over their use. We propose a novel set of evaluation methods in addition to applying established tests for image retrieval; our technique proves competitive with state-of-the-art methods in these tests and does better on certain tasks. Furthermore, it improves on many standard image retrieval …

Data As Ensembles Of Records: Representation And Comparison, Nicholas Howe Jan 2000

Data As Ensembles Of Records: Representation And Comparison, Nicholas Howe

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Many collections of data do not come packaged in a form amenable to the ready application of machine learning techniques. Nevertheless, there has been only limited research on the problem of preparing raw data for learning, perhaps because widespread differences between domains make generalization difficult. This paper focuses on one common class of raw data, in which the entities of interest actually comprise collections of (smaller pieces of) homologous data. We present a technique for processing such collections into high-dimensional vectors, suitable for the application of many learning algorithms including clustering, nearestneighbors, and boosting. We demonstrate the abilities of the …
