Sequence Analysis Of Bacterial Dna In The Colon And Stomach Of The Tyrolean Iceman, Raul J. Cano, Friedrich Tiefenbrunner, Massimo Ubaldi, Clarissa Del Cueto, Stefania Luciani, Tobe Cox, Paula Orkand, Karl H. Kunzel, Franco Rollo

Biological Sciences

The male human body found in an Alpine glacier on September 19, 1991 ("Tyrolean Iceman") has, for the first time in history, given scientists a chance to perform detailed anatomical, histological, and molecular investigations on the organs of a person from the Neolithic Age (5350-5100 B.P.). In the present study, tissue samples aseptically taken from the stomach and the colon of the mummy were utilized for DNA extraction, and the DNA was PCR-amplified, using primer pairs designed to bind to fragments of the 16s ribosomal RNA gene (16s rDNA) of a broad range of bacteria. The PCR products were cloned …

Trade Liberalization And International Migration: The Philippine Case, Fernando T. Aldaba Jul 2000

Trade Liberalization And International Migration: The Philippine Case, Fernando T. Aldaba

Economics Department Faculty Publications

The paper examines the determinants of international migration in the Philippines. Specifically, it looks at the relationship of trade and migration. It proposes an eclectic migration model and shows by regression analysis that goods and labor mobility are substitutes in the medium and long terms. In the short run, as economies expand due to market reforms, migration may still continue. Other determinants of international migration include the economic growth of the country and specific factors related to the destination countries like wage rates and the existence of networks. Political stability in the Philippines did not turn out to be significant. …

Vitamin A And Cancer, Richard M. Niles Jul 2000

Vitamin A And Cancer, Richard M. Niles

Biochemistry and Microbiology

Vitamin A, its physiological metabolites and synthetic derivatives (retinoids) have been shown to have protective effects against the development of certain types of cancer. In addition, pharmacological amounts of retinoids have been used with some success in the treatment of a few human tumors. The chemoprevention effect of retinoids is most likely exerted at the tumor promotion phase of carcinogenesis. Retinoids block tumor promotion by either inhibiting proliferation, inducing apoptosis, inducing differentiation, or a combination of these actions. Clinically, isotretinoin (13-cis-retinoic acid) significantly decreases the incidence of second primary tumors in patients with head and neck cancer and also reduces …

A Livable Wage: What Does It Take To Get By In Nebraska?, Lisa Darlington Jul 2000

A Livable Wage: What Does It Take To Get By In Nebraska?, Lisa Darlington

Business in Nebraska

Welfare reform in the 19905 brought a renewed interest in the working poor, prompting analysts around the country to develop basic family budgets. Basic family budgets attempt to measure the amount of income families require to meet their basic needs without public assistance. It is generally accepted that the basic needs of a family include food, shelter, health care, transportation, childcare, and household and personal expenses (clothing, etc.). as well as a minimal amount of leisure activity.

This study estimates the level of income, or livable wage, required to cover the basic needs and taxes1 of individuals and families in …

Development And Validation Of A Questionnaire To Evaluate Patient Satisfaction With Diabetes Disease Management, Lisa E. Paddock, J J. Veloski, Mary Lou Chatterton, Felicia O. Gevirtz, David B. Nash

CRMEHC Faculty Papers

OBJECTIVE: To develop a reliable and valid questionnaire to measure patient satisfaction with diabetes disease management programs.

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Questions related to structure, process, and outcomes were categorized into 14 domains defining the essential elements of diabetes disease management. Health professionals confirmed the content validity. Face validity was established by a patient focus group. The questionnaire was mailed to 711 patients with diabetes who participated in a disease management program. To reduce the number of questionnaire items, a principal components analysis was performed using a varimax rotation. The Scree test was used to select significant components. To further …

Swine Nutrition Guide, Duane E. Reese, Robert C. Thaler, Michael C. Brumm, Austin J. Lewis, Phillip S. Miller, George W. Libal

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

This publication is a revision of the previous swine nutrition publication prepared by the University of Nebraska and South Dakota State University. The focus of the publication continues to be on nutrient recommendations for swine. Specific factors (nutritional, environmental and managerial) that affect nutrient recommendations (Figure 1) have been considered and discussed. We believe that the identification and description of the factors in Figure 1 provide the framework for the nutrient recommendations presented in Tables 11 to 16. Industry advisors representing various facets of the pork industry were recruited to review and challenge the concepts incorporated in this publication. Also, …

Chronic Arsenic Exposure And Risk Of Infant Mortality In Two Areas Of Chile, Claudia Hopenhayn-Rich, Steven R. Browning, Irva Hertz-Picciotto, Catterina Ferreccio, Cecilia Peralta, Herman Gibb Jul 2000

Chronic Arsenic Exposure And Risk Of Infant Mortality In Two Areas Of Chile, Claudia Hopenhayn-Rich, Steven R. Browning, Irva Hertz-Picciotto, Catterina Ferreccio, Cecilia Peralta, Herman Gibb

Preventive Medicine and Environmental Health Faculty Publications

Chronic arsenic exposure has been associated with a range of neurologic, vascular, dermatologic, and carcinogenic effects. However, limited research has been directed at the association of arsenic exposure and human reproductive health outcomes. The principal aim of this study was to investigate the trends in infant mortality between two geographic locations in Chile: Antofagasta, which has a well-documented history of arsenic exposure from naturally contaminated water, and Valparaíso, a comparable low-exposure city. The arsenic concentration in Antofagasta's public drinking water supply rose substantially in 1958 with the introduction of a new water source, and remained elevated until 1970. We used …

Assets As A Measure Of Household Welfare In Developing Countries, David E. Sahn, David Stifel Jul 2000

Assets As A Measure Of Household Welfare In Developing Countries, David E. Sahn, David Stifel

Center for Social Development Research

This paper was commissioned for Inclusion in Asset Building: Research and Policy Symposium, an event hosted in September 2000 by the Center for Social Development at Washington University in St. Louis. The paper identifies and explores the use of an asset-based metric of welfare. The metric relies on assets data that are easy to collect and analyze. The authors demonstrate that the asset index functions well in identifying and profiling the poor, in targeting transfers, and even in estimating demand or production functions for outcomes that are useful for designing programs and policy.

The Application Of Product Liability Principles To Publishers Of Violent Or Sexually Explicit Material, Richard C. Ausness Jul 2000

The Application Of Product Liability Principles To Publishers Of Violent Or Sexually Explicit Material, Richard C. Ausness

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

There have been a number of tragic incidents during the past few years in which mentally unstable teenagers have carried guns into school and shot teachers and fellow students. These schoolyard killings have generated an intense debate about the problem of violence in our society. Some social commentators have attributed teenage violence to the widespread availability of firearms, while others blame parental neglect, lack of discipline in the schools, or the declining influence of religion and morality in contemporary culture. However, another source of concern is the popular media, which stands accused of purveying sex and violence on a massive …
