Teen Pregnancy Prevention Programs: Linking Research And Practice, Marilyn J. Johns, Fe Moncloa, Elizabeth J. Gong Aug 2000

Teen Pregnancy Prevention Programs: Linking Research And Practice, Marilyn J. Johns, Fe Moncloa, Elizabeth J. Gong

Journal of Extension

Although the overall rate of teen pregnancy in the United States has been declining, rates have remained high for younger unmarried teens. Evaluation studies of pregnancy prevention programs indicate that many are ineffective or not well evaluated. The focus of this article is to identify and share 10 suggested "best practices" from the field and literature. Three critical practices identified are: a youth development component, family involvement, and culturally relevant practices. Implications for Cooperative Extension programming are discussed.

Baseline Susceptibility Of The Corn Earworm (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) To The Cry1ab Toxin From Bacillus Thuringiensis, Blair D. Siegfried, Terrence A. Spencer, Jessica Nearman Aug 2000

Baseline Susceptibility Of The Corn Earworm (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) To The Cry1ab Toxin From Bacillus Thuringiensis, Blair D. Siegfried, Terrence A. Spencer, Jessica Nearman

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Susceptibility to Cry1Ab toxin from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) was determined for 12 field populations of neonate corn earworm, Helicoverpa zea (Boddie), from the United States. Earworm larvae were exposed to artificial diet treated with increasing Bt concentrations, and mortality and growth inhibition were evaluated after 7 d. The range of variation in Bt susceptibility indicated by growth inhibition was very similar to that indicated by mortality. Although interpopulation variation in susceptibility to both proteins was observed, the magnitude of the differences was small (less than or equal to fivefold). These results suggest that the observed susceptibility differences reflect natural variation …

Effects Of Water Conditions On Clutch Size, Egg Volume, And Hatchling Mass Of Mallards And Gadwalls In The Prairie Pothole Region, Pamela Pietz, Gary Krapu, Deborah Buhl, David A. Brandt

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

We examined the relationship between local water conditions (measured as the percent of total area of basins covered by water) and clutch size, egg volume, and hatchling mass of Mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) and Gadwalls (A. strepera) on four study sites in the Prairie Pothole Region of North Dakota and Minnesota, 1988–1994. We also examined the relationship between pond density and clutch size of Mallards and Gadwalls, using data collected at another North Dakota site, 1966–1981. For Mallards, we found no relationships to be significant. For Gadwalls, clutch size increased with percent basin area wet and pond …

Determining The Effects On Parental Attitudes And Parenting Styles Towards Child Rearing After Participation In A Rural Parenting Program, Kathryn A. Canter

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The intent of this study was to examine parental attitudes toward parenting and parenting styles before and after participation in a rural parent education program. The parental attitudes toward parenting were measured by the Parental Attitude Research Instrument (PARI). The three parenting styles; authoritarian, authoritative, and permissive, were measured by the Parenting Style Dimension (PSD). The participants in this study were six mothers of children who attended either the Starting Points Center Happy School or who visited the Food Pantry at Scott's Run Settlement House in Morgantown, West Virginia.;Cronbach's alphas were run on all measures with high reliability found on …

Adapting Parent -Child Interaction Therapy To Train Head Start Teachers In Behavior Management, Alisa B. Bahl Aug 2000

Adapting Parent -Child Interaction Therapy To Train Head Start Teachers In Behavior Management, Alisa B. Bahl

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Efforts toward greater inclusion of children with a range of presenting problems have resulted in increasingly more children with difficult behavior in non-specialized classrooms. Unfortunately, teachers report that they have not been trained adequately to work with children who exhibit extreme behaviors. It is important, therefore, that effective methods of training teachers are empirically investigated. In clinical settings, strategies for training parents of young children with disruptive behavior disorders have substantial empirical support. Therefore, using these techniques to train teachers is a logical step. Parent-Child Interaction Therapy is one empirically validated parent training approach that uses coaching as a means …

Effects Of Nitrogen And Water On Growth, Photosynthesis, And Leaf Properties Of Deciduous Tree Species With Consequences For Gypsy Moth Herbivory, Teri S. Myers Aug 2000

Effects Of Nitrogen And Water On Growth, Photosynthesis, And Leaf Properties Of Deciduous Tree Species With Consequences For Gypsy Moth Herbivory, Teri S. Myers

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study addressed the hypothesis that plants exposed to elevated N availability are more susceptible to drought and insect herbivory. I grew seedlings of gray birch (Betula populifolia), yellow birch (B. alleghaniensis), and red oak (Quercus rubra) for two years under varying levels of N and water availability in the field. Growth and biomass allocation were examined for the three species. Photosynthetic response was determined and feeding trials with gypsy moth larvae were conducted with both birch species. I found that the effects of nitrogen on growth and biomass allocation depended on species, while water had no significant effect on …

Induction Of Myosin Cross-Reactive Antibody And Cytolytic T Cell Responses In Mice With Streptococcus Pyogenes, Cynthia Ann Cunningham Aug 2000

Induction Of Myosin Cross-Reactive Antibody And Cytolytic T Cell Responses In Mice With Streptococcus Pyogenes, Cynthia Ann Cunningham

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Impetigo and pharyngitis are two common suppurative infections in man elicited by Streptococcus pyogenes that lead to autoimmune complications in susceptible individuals. Although the underlying mechanisms for the onset of post-streptococcal autoimmunity have yet to be established, experimental information gained thus far suggests that the resultant pathology is a consequence of immunological cross-reactivity between streptococcal antigens, namely the anti-phagocytic factor M protein and host proteins, specifically myosin. Experimental animal model systems developed to date have predominantly relied on the immunization of adult animals with M protein emulsed in adjuvant. In the laboratory we have undertaken studies with mice to examine …

The resident teachers' perceptions and experiences were studied from January 1999 through the completion of their teaching experience in May 1999.

Qualitative research methods were used in this phenomenological study, including a brief period of observation, analysis of mentor/resident teacher communications journals, and interviews with participants in the Resident Teacher …

Comparison Of Health Promotion Behaviors And Performance On The Navy Physical Readiness Test Among Active Duty Shipboard Personnel With And Without Anterior Knee Pain, Robin Theresa Mckenzie Phd, Msn, Rn Aug 2000

Comparison Of Health Promotion Behaviors And Performance On The Navy Physical Readiness Test Among Active Duty Shipboard Personnel With And Without Anterior Knee Pain, Robin Theresa Mckenzie Phd, Msn, Rn

Dissertations

Health promotion is the number one health priority of the nation, yet, health promoting behaviors (HPB) are rarely part of the management plan for persons with anterior knee pain (AKP). In an active duty military population, AKP can interfere with performance on the required, semi-annual physical readiness test (PRT). The purpose of this descriptive, comparative study was to compare the relationships among HPB, AKP and performance on the PRT between two groups of active duty Navy shipboard personnel (those with AKP and those without AKP). Pender's (1996) Health Promotion Model (HPM) served as the theoretical framework. Subjects completed demographic and …

Pagophagia And Hemoglobin Levels In Pregnant Women, Contessa Ward Aug 2000

Pagophagia And Hemoglobin Levels In Pregnant Women, Contessa Ward

MSN Research Projects

Pica is a behavior characterized by the compulsive, persistent ingestion of non-food substances. It is a longstanding practice that has far-reaching implications for prevention and treatment. Pagophagia, or the excessive, compulsive consumption of ice, is a subcategory of pica. Although pica has been documented for centuries, there are limited studies regarding pagophagia and its effects in pregnant women. A comparative descriptive study was conducted to determine whether pagophagia is related to hemoglobin levels during pregnancy. Becker's Health Belief Model was utilized as the theoretical framework. Data were gathered by means of retrospective chart audit. The hypothesis was there would be …
