Replication: Regressive Reproduction Or Progressive Evolution?, Graham Wright Sep 2000

Replication: Regressive Reproduction Or Progressive Evolution?, Graham Wright

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

Increasing numbers of organizations are "replicating" the programs of successful microfinance institutions (MFIs). This approach allows rapid start-up using tested models and systems. These strengths are also weaknesses, though, since the models being replicated usually require substantial modifications to make them appropriate for local conditions. Furthermore, close adherence to "blueprints" is likely to substitute for careful research into the needs and opportunities for the provision of financial services to the poor--and thus the design of appropriate systems. Replication also risks the suppression of innovative ways of providing still better financial services--particularly when promoted by powerful apex funding organizations, as is …

Vesicular-Arbuscular Mycorrhizae On Sapium Glandulosum In Pastures And Light Gaps, September 2000, Karen Leigh Sonnenblick Sep 2000

Vesicular-Arbuscular Mycorrhizae On Sapium Glandulosum In Pastures And Light Gaps, September 2000, Karen Leigh Sonnenblick

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

The purpose of this study was to look at the frequency of infection and percent root infection of vesiculararbuscular mycorrhizae present in saplings of Sapium glandulosum in pasture and gaps. Saplings in the pasture had a significantly higher frequency of infection than saplings in the gaps (Two-by-two contingency table, X² = 27.855, p < 0.0001). Saplings in the pasture also had a significantly higher mean percent infection than saplings in the gaps (Mann-Whitney U test, U = 370.00, tied p-value = 0.0013). These findings indicated that the amount of disturbance that an area has been subjected to strongly influences the levels of VAM growth on S. glandulosum.

Tiller Recruitment Patterns And Biennial Tiller Production In Prairie Sandreed, J. R. Hendrickson, Lowell E. Moser, Patrick E. Reece Sep 2000

Tiller Recruitment Patterns And Biennial Tiller Production In Prairie Sandreed, J. R. Hendrickson, Lowell E. Moser, Patrick E. Reece

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Tiller recruitment is an essential process for ensuring the perenniality of grasses. The timing and extent of tiller recruitment and the role of biennial tillers must be documented for key range species. Prairie sandreed [Calamovilfa longifolia (Hook) Scribn.] is an important grass in the Nebraska Sandhills for both ecological functioning and as a forage. The objective of this study was to document tiller recruitment patterns and the occurrence and contribution of current year and biennial tillers to biomass production in prairie sandreed at 2 locations in Nebraska. Tiller recruitment was monitored at 2-week periods throughout the growing season during …

Using Expert Systems For Simulation Modeling Of Patient Scheduling, Charles R. Standridge, Duane Steward Sep 2000

Using Expert Systems For Simulation Modeling Of Patient Scheduling, Charles R. Standridge, Duane Steward

Peer Reviewed Articles

Modeling the scheduling of patient appointments is an important issue in simulating a health care delivery facility. A simulation model must include the control logic of appointment scheduling software and the explicit and implicit decision rules used by the human scheduler in selecting an appointment time. Expert systems provide one way of modeling such control logic and decision rules. We describe a structure for an expert system that models patient appointment scheduling and the integration of such an expert system within a simulation model. An example expert system for a small animal veterinary clinic is presented.

Using Hypermedia And Multimedia To Promote Project-Based Learning Of At-Risk High School Students, Tracy Carr, Asha K. Jitendra Sep 2000

Using Hypermedia And Multimedia To Promote Project-Based Learning Of At-Risk High School Students, Tracy Carr, Asha K. Jitendra

Special Topics, General

The term at-risk in this article refers to those students who are in danger of dropping out of school (Rodriguez, 199i). Often, these students have low self-esteem resulting from persistently low academic achievement. One possible reason for academic failure is a mismatch between the student's needs and the curricular expectations. Consequently, it is important to plan to meet individual student needs appropriately and minimize the rate of dropouts. Planning more appropriately requires individualization of goals and curricula.
