Foraging Preference Of Atta Cephalotes (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), November 2000, Laurel Klein, Joseph Reid Nov 2000

Foraging Preference Of Atta Cephalotes (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), November 2000, Laurel Klein, Joseph Reid

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Leaf cutter ants, Atta cephalotes, were found to make distinct tree species choices as herbivores in the premontane wet forest of Cerro Plano, Costa Rica. One trail from each of six nests was studied. Trail lengths varied, ranging from 3.30 m to 40.40m. Trees were identified along the trail, as well as the host tree at the end of the trails. Three leaves were taken from each tree and tested for toughness, thickness, and percent water content. The results for each test for each tree along a trail were compared to those for the host tree. The ants selected for …

Profiting From Adversity - Meeting The Challenge Of Salinity Through New Industry Development, Andrew Quinn, Tamara Law, Peter Rowe Nov 2000

Profiting From Adversity - Meeting The Challenge Of Salinity Through New Industry Development, Andrew Quinn, Tamara Law, Peter Rowe

Natural resources published reports

Salinity in the Wheatbelt of Western Australia is one of the most significant challenges facing the State's agricultural sector.

Efforts to manage the increasing effect of salt influenced and threatened farming land requires not only the implementation of new farming systems, but a new way of thinking and attitude to production more in tune with environmental and technological limitations.

While past environment lobby pressures have significantly focused on other production activities such as mining and forestry, the future is likely to see increased community interest in agricultural production systems.

Consumers World wide are becoming more environmentally sensitive, with global media …

Low Recharge Farming Systems. Case Studies On The South Coast, Arjen Ryder, Jamie Bowyer, Gerry Skinner, Clare Mccarron Nov 2000

Low Recharge Farming Systems. Case Studies On The South Coast, Arjen Ryder, Jamie Bowyer, Gerry Skinner, Clare Mccarron

Natural resources published reports

This booklet is intended as a guide to assist land managers to design or select low recharge farming systems. Options that increase water use are described with benefits and issues for each option.

Case studies describe the experiences of landholders who have had a go at establishing and managing such systems. Examples are included from different rainfall zones. The systems mentioned in this manual are only a guide.

Permeabilization Of Cochliomyia Hominivorax (Diptera: Calliphoridae) Embryos, Dennis Berkebile, Jan Chirico, Roger A. Leopold Nov 2000

Permeabilization Of Cochliomyia Hominivorax (Diptera: Calliphoridae) Embryos, Dennis Berkebile, Jan Chirico, Roger A. Leopold

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Embryos of the primary screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel), were successfully permeabilized for use in subsequent cryopreservation studies. Mortality was greater for eggs incubated for<5 h before treatment. The mean survival of embryos to first instars was 55.7, 61.1, and 62.6% when the embryos were incubated for 5, 5.5, and 6 h before treatment, respectively. The survival to the pupal and adult stages was low. An improved media for culturing the embryos during and immediately after treatment needs to be devised and the procedure for rearing the larval stages also needs to be altered to improve survival for emerging adults.

Obituary: Elmer Clea Birney, 1940-2000, Hugh H. Genoways, Carleton J. Phillips, Jerry R. Choate, Robert S. Sikes, Kristin M. Kramer

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

On 11 June 2000, Dr. Elmer C. Birney unexpectedly passed away from cardiac arrest suffered while outside caring for his cattle at his home in Blaine, Minnesota. One of his former students, Robert Timm, probably best expressed the immediate reaction of his family and many friends: ‘‘He was too young and in too good of health to be gone so soon.’’ At the time of his death, Elmer was Professor in the Department of Ecology, Evolution and Behavior, the Curator of Mammals at the Bell Museum of Natural History, and Director of Graduate Studies of the program in Ecology, Evolution …

Marine Planktonic Archaea Take Up Amino Acids, Cleber C. Ouverney, Jed A. Fuhrman Nov 2000

Marine Planktonic Archaea Take Up Amino Acids, Cleber C. Ouverney, Jed A. Fuhrman

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

Archaea are traditionally thought of as “extremophiles,” but recent studies have shown that marine planktonic Archaea make up a surprisingly large percentage of ocean midwater microbial communities, up to 60% of the total prokaryotes. However, the basic physiology and contribution of Archaea to community microbial activity remain unknown. We have studied Archaea from 200-m depths of the northwest Mediterranean Sea and the Pacific Ocean near California, measuring the archaeal activity under simulated natural conditions (8 to 17°C, dark and anaerobic) by means of a method called substrate tracking autoradiography fluorescence in situ hybridization (STARFISH) that simultaneously detects specific cell types …

Practical Proof Of The Validity Of The Target Theory By Simulating Cellular Targets, Salih F. M Oct 2000

Practical Proof Of The Validity Of The Target Theory By Simulating Cellular Targets, Salih F. M

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Objective – To practically prove the validity of the target theory as a mathematical model to describe and understand themechanisms involved in cell killing by ionising radiation. Method – Experimental validation of the target theory was attempted using Bacillus megaterium spores. Sets of 100 vials containing averages of 1, 2, 5, 50 and 500 spores per vial was exposed to varying gamma radiation doses in presence (oxic) and absence (anoxic) of oxygen (O2). The percentage of the vials that exhibited bacterial growth after 6 days of incubation was taken as containing one spore or more, which survived a given dose. …
