U.S. Dietary Supplement Regulation: Belief Systems And Legal Rules, Michael H. Cohen Jan 2000

U.S. Dietary Supplement Regulation: Belief Systems And Legal Rules, Michael H. Cohen

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

This article explores dietary supplement regulation and the belief systems and legal rules that shape it. Part I discusses the key provisions of the federal Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA). Part II examines how DSHEA, philosophically, represents a compromise between extreme medical paternalism (the orthodox view that the FDA should dictate consumer access to dietary supplements) and radical patient autonomy (the liberal view that patients should have unlimited consumer access to dietary supplements). Part II frames the debate in terms of regulatory proposal, policy, values, and belief system. Strong controls in regulation (FDA's paternalistic viewpoint) and weak controls …

Faculty Publications

We conducted three experiments to determine the influence of mechanical processing on corn silage utilization by lactating dairy cows. Total mixed rations contained either unprocessed or processed corn silage harvested between 1/4 and 3/4 milk line. In trial 1, 12 multiparous Holstein cows were used in a replicated double switchback design with 21-d periods. Intake of dry matter (DM) was increased 1.2 kg/d by processing, but milk yield was unaffected. Processing did not affect apparent total-tract DM digestibility, but processing tended to lower starch and corn excretion in feces and reduced concentration of sieved corn kernel particles in feces. In …

A multiplex amplification and detection platform for the diagnosis of Mycobacterium bovis and Brucella abortus infection simultaneously in bovine milk and nasal secretions was developed. This system (designated the bovine pathogen detection assay [BPDA]-PCR) consists of duplex amplification of species-specific targets (a region of the BCSP31K gene of B. abortus and a repeat-sequence region in the hsp65 gene of M. bovis, respectively). This is followed by a solid-phase probe capture hybridization of amplicons for detection. On the basis of spiking experiments with normal milk, the analytical sensitivity of the assay was 800 CFU equivalents/ml of milk for B. abortus and …

Fermentation Of Glucose And Fructose By Leuconostoc Mesenteroides, Hüseyi̇n Erten Jan 2000

Fermentation Of Glucose And Fructose By Leuconostoc Mesenteroides, Hüseyi̇n Erten

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

The preferred order of glucose and fructose uptake by Leuconostoc mesenteroides was investigated in Glucose Fructose Yeast Extract Amino Acid medium with and without the addition of salt under anaerobic conditions. Strains NCIMB 8023 and NCFB 811 preferentially utilised glucose over fructose. A higher biomass was obtained when employing strain NCIMB 8023 compared with strain NCFB 811. The strains studied produced lactate and ethanol as major end-products, with lactate synthesis being greater than ethanol. Small amounts of acetate and mannitol were also formed.

Effects Of Leafy Spurge (Euphorbia Esula) Infestation On Breeding Birds Of The Sheyenne National Grassland, Nd, Daniel M. Scheiman

Masters Theses

Leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula) is an exotic invasive weed in the northern Great Plains. We examined the effects of leafy spurge infestation on densities and nest success of breeding birds in grasslands on the Sheyenne National Grassland (SNG), ND. We categorized spurge-infested grasslands into three levels of infestation, based on the area covered by spurge patches: (a) low (0-20%), (b) medium (20-60%) and, (c) high (> 60%). We surveyed 60 100-m radius circular plots (20 in each category), and searched for nests in three 16-ha plots (one in each category). There were no statistically significant differences in mean species richness …

Carbohydrate-Related Changes In Sweetpotato Storage Roots During Development, Don R. La Bonte, David H. Picha, Hester A. Johnson

Faculty Publications

The quantity and pattern of carbohydrate-related changes during storage root development differed among six sweetpotato cultivars [Ipomoea batatas (L.) Poir. 'Beauregard', 'Heart-o-Gold', 'Jewel', 'Rojo Blanco', 'Travis', and 'White Star']. Measurements were taken for individual sugars, total sugars, alcohol-insoluble solids (AIS, crude starch), and dry weight (DW) at 2-week intervals from 7 to 19 weeks after transplanting (WAT) in two separate years. Sucrose was the major sugar during all stages of development, representing at least 68% of total sugars across all cultivars and dates. Pairwise comparisons showed 'Heart-o-Gold' had the highest sucrose content among the cultivars. Sucrose content increased by 56% …
