The "Persuasion Route" Of The Law: Advertising And Legal Persuasion, Sarah C. Haan
The "Persuasion Route" Of The Law: Advertising And Legal Persuasion, Sarah C. Haan
Scholarly Articles
Persuasive commercial messages--advertisements--dominate our experience of persuasion in contemporary American life. In the past quarter century, the commercial landscape has witnessed significant change in the volume, styles, and strategies of advertising. In particular, this Note argues that modern advertising contains little information about products and services, and that rational processing of information has become less important to consumer decisionmaking. At the same time, advertising research shows that consumers do not seek out or use product information contained in advertisements, and that less-informative advertising may actually be more persuasive than advertising containing a lot of information. This Note argues that changes …

Planning For Drought: Moving From Crisis To Risk Management, Donald A. Wilhite, Michael J. Hayes, Cody Knutson, Kelly Helm Smith
Planning For Drought: Moving From Crisis To Risk Management, Donald A. Wilhite, Michael J. Hayes, Cody Knutson, Kelly Helm Smith
National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications
Severe drought is a recurring problem for the United States, as illustrated by widespread economic, social, and environmental impacts. Recent drought episodes and the widespread drought conditions in 1996, 1998, and 1999 emphasized this vulnerability and the need for a more proactive, risk man-agement approach to drought management that would place greater emphasis on preparedness planning and mitigation actions. Drought planning has become a principal tool of states and other levels of government to improve their response to droughts. For example, since 1982, the number of states with drought plans has increased from 3 to 29. Many local governments have …

Chapter 18 Drought: Pervasive Impacts Of A Creeping Phenomenon, Donald A. Wilhite, Olga V. Vanyarkho
National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications
Throughout human existence, drought has been a threat to the survival of societies. It has often been a trigger for massive human migrations, famines, and wars, altering the course of history itself. Today, as we prepare to enter the twenty-first century, drought continues to affect our global community in countless ways. In fact, we are still discovering the complex interrelationships between drought and society and grappling with response and mitigation strategies that will lessen impacts and therefore reduce vulnerability for future generations.
Chapter 35 Preparing For Drought: A Methodology, Donald A. Wilhite
Chapter 35 Preparing For Drought: A Methodology, Donald A. Wilhite
National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications
Preparedness was defined in chapter 1 as predisaster activities designed to increase the level of readiness or improve operational and institutional capabilities for responding to an emergency. Drought preparedness has encountered increasing support from governments in recent years at various levels because of escalating impacts and the ineffectiveness and costs of emergency assistance programs that have little noticeable return. For example, between 1970 and 1984, state and federal government in Australia expended more than A$925 million on drought relief under the Natural Disaster Relief Arrangements (Wilhite 1986). The Republic of South Africa spent R2.5 billion for drought relief from the …
Including Preschool Children In The School Counseling Program : Classroom Recommendations For Counselors, Nancy A. Kriener
Including Preschool Children In The School Counseling Program : Classroom Recommendations For Counselors, Nancy A. Kriener
Graduate Research Papers
School counselors have long advocated including all children in their guidance programs. However, preschool children who attend public schools are often not a part of the school counseling program.
In light of the national trend emphasizing the importance of early childhood education, many public schools are assuming more responsibility for preschool education (Hohenshil & Hohenshil, 1989). As more and more preschools are being adopted by public schools, school counselors must be ready to extend their services to these children.

Assessing Factors That May Predispose Minnesota Farms To Wolf Depredations On Cattle, L. David Mech, Elizabeth K. Harper, Thomas J. Meier, William J. Paul
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
Wolf (Canis lupus) depredations on livestock cause considerable conflict and expense in Minnesota. Furthermore, claims are made that such depredations are fostered by the type of animal husbandry practiced. Thus, we tried to detect factors that might predispose farms in Minnesota to wolf depredations. We compared results of interviews with 41 cattle farmers experiencing chronic cattle losses to wolves (chronic farms) with results from 41 nearby "matched" farms with no wolf losses to determine farm characteristics or husbandry practices that differed and that therefore might have affected wolf depredations. We also used a Geographic Information System (GIS) to …

Evidence For Microbial Fe(Iii) Reduction In Anoxic, Mining-Impacted Lake Sediments (Lake Coeur D’Alene, Idaho), David E. Cummings, Anthony W. March, Benjamin Bostick, Stefan Spring, Frank Caccavo Jr., Scott Fendorf, Frank Rosenzweig
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Mining-impacted sediments of Lake Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, contain more than 10% metals on a dry weight basis, approximately 80% of which is iron. Since iron (hydr)oxides adsorb toxic, ore-associated elements, such as arsenic, iron (hydr)oxide reduction may in part control the mobility and bioavailability of these elements. Geochemical and microbiological data were collected to examine the ecological role of dissimilatory Fe(III)-reducing bacteria in this habitat. The concentration of mild-acid-extractable Fe(II) increased with sediment depth up to 50 g kg−1, suggesting that iron reduction has occurred recently. The maximum concentrations of dissolved Fe(II) in interstitial water (41 mg liter …

Teaching Composition As A Social Process, Bruce Mccomiskey
Teaching Composition As A Social Process, Bruce Mccomiskey
All USU Press Publications
Bruce McComiskey is a strong advocate of social approaches to teaching writing. However, he opposes composition teaching that relies on cultural theory for content, because it too often prejudges the ethical character of institutions and reverts unnecessarily to product-centered practices in the classroom. He opposes what he calls the "read-this-essay-and-do-what-the-author-did method of writing instruction: read Roland Barthes's essay 'Toys' and write a similar essay; read John Fiske's essay on TV and critique a show." McComiskey argues for teaching writing as situated in discourse itself, in the constant flow of texts produced within social relationships and institutions. He urges writing teachers …
What Is Fair? Experimental Evidence, David L. Dickenson, Jill Tiefenthaler
What Is Fair? Experimental Evidence, David L. Dickenson, Jill Tiefenthaler
Economic Research Institute Study Papers
There has been growing interest within the economics discipline in the role of equity concerns in the distribution of resources. This paper presents empirical evidence from a series of controlled laboratory experiments where third-party decision-makers must allocate resources between two individuals. The experimental results indicate that subjects view a wide range of different allocations as the fair distribution of resources. However, regression analysis indicates that both treatment effects and a few demographic variables explain some of this variation in fairness concepts. Most significantly, decision-makers rewarded subjects who earned their favorable positions and the gender of the decision-maker was an important …

This study investigated the effects of quantity and type of diet fed to superovulated donor heifers on molecular and metabolic indices of embryonic development. These effects included the relative abundances of mRNAs for the alpha 1 subunit of Na/K-ATPase and the antioxidant enzyme Cu/Zn-SOD, as well as pyruvate utilization in bovine morulae and blastocysts developed in vivo. Heifers were fed a daily ration of either grass silage and a citrus-beet pulp-based concentrate or grass silage and a barley-based concentrate for 116 days, both at 3 kg per day or ad libitum. In embryos derived from heifers fed the pulp-based diets, …

Background: Orange juice - a rich source of vitamin C, folate, and flavonoids such as hesperidin - induces hypocholesterolemic responses in animals. Objective: We determined whether orange juice beneficially altered blood lipids in subjects with moderate hypercholesterolemia. Design: The sample consisted of 16 healthy men and 9 healthy women with elevated plasma total and LDL-cholesterol and normal plasma triacylglycerol concentrations. Participants incorporated 1, 2, or 3 cups (250 mL each) of orange juice sequentially into their diets, each dose over a period of 4 wk. This was followed by a 5-wk washout period. Plasma lipid, folate, homocyst(e)ine, and vitamin C …

Direct And Indirect Parametrization Of A Localized Model For The Mountain Pine Beetle — Lodgepole Pine System, Zy Biesinger, James Powell, Barbara Bentz, Jesse Logan
United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The dynamic interaction between mountain pine beetles (MPB) and one of its hosts is reviewed briefly. The ‘local’ projection of a partial differential equation model describing this interaction is employed in model parameter estimation. Methods and assumptions for estimating non-fitted parameter values are given. Assigning values to non-fitted parameters, direct and indirect parametrization techniques are employed to estimate remaining parameter values. The indirect method is quickly and easily applied to many data sets but requires some assumptions and model simplifications. The direct method requires fewer assumptions but is computationally intensive. The results of these two techniques are compared and evaluated.
