Catecholamines play an important role in controlling white adipose tissue function and development. β- and α2-adrenergic receptors (ARs) couple positively and negatively, respectively, to adenylyl cyclase and are co-expressed in human adipocytes. Previous studies have demonstrated increased adipocyte α2/β-AR balance in obesity, and it has been proposed that increased α2-ARs in adipose tissue with or without decreased β-ARs may contribute mechanistically to the development of increased fat mass. To critically test this hypothesis, adipocyte α2/β-AR balance was genetically manipulated in mice. Human α2A-ARs were transgenically expressed in the adipose tissue of mice that were either homozygous (−/−) or heterozygous (+/−) …
Spring-Staging Ecology Of Waterfowl In Nebraska — Then Versus Now, Robert R. Cox Jr.
Spring-Staging Ecology Of Waterfowl In Nebraska — Then Versus Now, Robert R. Cox Jr.
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
Spring snow storms can influence migration chronology and nutrient-reserve dynamics of waterfowl in Nebraska.
For centuries, the Rainwater Basin and Platte River Valley of central Nebraska have attracted millions of migrating waterfowl during spring. While in this region, females begin to accumulate fat and protein reserves needed for egg-laying and for recruitment of young.

How Wisconsin Farmers Feed Theircows: Results Of The 1999 Wisconsin Dairy Herd Feeding Study, Douglas B. Jackson-Smith, J. M. Powell
Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications
The Wisconsin dairy industry has seen dramatic changes over the last 20 years (Jackson- Smith and Barham, 2000). Overall, dairy farm numbers have been cut in half since the early 1980s, and the average size of remaining herds has increased by more than 60 percent (from roughly 40 cows to over 65 cows per herd). Despite these changes, most dairies are still single-family businesses, relying on household members for virtually all their farm labor requirements (Buttel et al., 2000). In 1998, state statistics suggested that over 70 percent of Wisconsin dairy operations were milking between 30 and 99 cows, and …

Effect Of Calving Time And Weaning Time On Cow And Calf Performance - A Preliminary Report, R. J. Pruitt, B. Epperson, B. Johnson, D. Zalesky, R. Haigh, D. Young
South Dakota Beef Report, 2000
Cows grazing native range year round were allotted to 3 management systems: 1.) A calving season starting in mid March with calves weaned in late October; 2) A calving season starting in mid March with calves weaned in mid September; and 3) A calving season starting early May with calves weaned in late October. After 2 years of the study, pregnancy rate and calving interval were not affected by management system. Average weaning weight was the highest for the March calving/October weaned group in both years. In the first year of the study, severe winter weather caused a lower calf …

Long Term Drug And Alcohol Treatment Program: An Outcome Study Comparing Secular-Based Treatment With Faith-Based Treatment For Addiction, Ruby Lee Adams
Theses Digitization Project
The study was conducted to see if there is as much or more of a difference in outcome of treatment for addiction in faith-based treatment than secular-based treatment. The research was conducted using a sample of thirty-seven respondents from various sites in Southern California who volunteered to fill out the questionnaire. Data was collected using a self-administrated survey questionnaire.

Telemedicine: The Invisible Legal Barriers To The Health Care Of The Future, Heather A. Daley
Telemedicine: The Invisible Legal Barriers To The Health Care Of The Future, Heather A. Daley
Annals of Health Law and Life Sciences
Telemedicine has the potential to transform the world of health care just as the Internet transformed the world of commerce. Ms. Daly examines two legal obstacles to expanding the use of telemedicine: licensure and liability. She defines telemedicine and discusses its common applications and significant benefits. Licensure laws and liability rules result in formidable barriers to the expanded use of telemedicine, while also failing to provide sufficient protection for consumers. Ms. Daly argues that for the benefits of telemedicine to reach those most in need, mutual recognition of licensing laws coupled with a universal standard of care is necessary.

Examining Counseling Strategies For African American Adolescent Crack Abusers, Paula Reed Dorris
Examining Counseling Strategies For African American Adolescent Crack Abusers, Paula Reed Dorris
Graduate Research Papers
The author of this paper has addressed the significance of the development of treatment strategies to implement with African American adolescent crack addicts. An integral basis for tailoring culturally specific treatment approaches for African American adolescents relates to the unique circumstances, which may promote more extensive crack abuse by this group. Depression was the difficulty which the author chose to focus upon. Several different methods of helping these adolescents are discussed. The intervention strategies which show promise in helping African American adolescent crack addicts include: (a) Interpersonal Therapy; (b) psycho-educational programs; (c) involvement of family members in treatment; (d) use …

Ec00-281 Body Condition Scoring Beef Cows: A Tool For Managing The Nutrition Program For Beef Herds, Richard J. Rasby, James A. Gosey, Don C. Adams
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Body condition scores (BCS) describe the relative fatness of a cow through the use of a nine-point scale and is an effective management tool to evaluate nutrition status of the herd.
This extension circular describes the nine-point body condition scoring system, relationship between body condition and productivity of the cow herd, and use of body condition as a management tool to develop and monitor nutritional programs. Incorporation of body condition scoring as a management tool can increase the profit potential of the cow/calf enterprise.
