Sharpness Rules, Garrett Johnson, Mark Fairchild Jan 2000

Sharpness Rules, Garrett Johnson, Mark Fairchild

Presentations and other scholarship

A large-scale psychophysical experiment was performed examining the effects of various simultaneous variations of image parameters on perceived image sharpness. The goal of this experiment was to unlock some of the rules of image sharpness perception. A paired comparison paradigm was used to compare images of different resolution, contrast, noise, and sharpening. In total, 50 people performed over 140,000 observations. The results indicate that there are several very interesting tradeoffs between the various parameters of contrast, noise, resolution, and spatial sharpening. An interval scale of image sharpness was created. This scale was then used to test the results of several …

Linear Pixel Shuffling (I): New Paradigms For New Printers, Peter G. Anderson, Jonathan Arney, Kevin Ayer Jan 2000

Linear Pixel Shuffling (I): New Paradigms For New Printers, Peter G. Anderson, Jonathan Arney, Kevin Ayer

Presentations and other scholarship

Linear Pixel Shuffling (LPS) is a novel order for image pixel processing which provides opportunities for construction of dot placement algorithms for high-resolution printers through micro-clumping and the formation of pseudo clustered dots. We present the details of LPS, how to program using it, several of its properties and applications, especially for electrophotographic (EP) imaging.

Error Diffusion Using Linear Pixel Shuffling, Peter G. Anderson Jan 2000

Error Diffusion Using Linear Pixel Shuffling, Peter G. Anderson

Presentations and other scholarship

Linear pixel shuffling error diffusion is a digital halftoning algorithm that combines the linear pixel shuffling (LPS) order of visiting pixels in an image with diffusion of quantization errors in all directions. LPS uses a simple linear rule to produce a pixel ordering giving a smooth, uniform probing of the image. This paper elucidates that algorithm. Like the Floyd-Steinberg algorithm, LPS error diffusion enhances edges and retains high-frequency image information. LPS error diffusion avoids some of the artifacts (“worm-s,” “tears,” and “checkerboarding”) often associated with the Floyd-Steinberg algorithm. LPS error diffusion requires the entire image be available in memory; the …

Quantifying Mixed Adaptation In Cross-Media Color Reproduction, Sharron Henley, Mark Fairchild

Presentations and other scholarship

This paper describes an investigation undertaken to address the goal set by the CIE Technical committee TC8- 04: "To investigate the state of adaptation of the visual system when comparing soft-copy images on self-luminous displays and hard copy images viewed under various ambient lighting conditions." A set of psychophysical experiments have been conducted for the determination of corresponding colors between printed stimuli under CIE Illuminant D50 simulators and CRT displayed stimuli with a D93 white point. The experiments were completed with 15 observers and 6 different viewing conditions. Analysis was completed to quantify any systematic effects of viewing configuration and …

Attempting To Ensure Fairness In The Glare Of The Media, Richard D. Friedman Jan 2000

Attempting To Ensure Fairness In The Glare Of The Media, Richard D. Friedman

Book Chapters

All legal systems worthy of credit have a commitment to achieving fairness between the parties to the litigation. In addition, common law legal systems have a longstanding commitment to openness in judicial proceedings. At the same time, and in part for the same reasons, they also have a longstanding commitment to freedom of expression. There is inevitably a tension among these three goals, because in cases of great public interest openness leads to publicity, and publicity may threaten or at least appear to threaten the fairness of a trial. In addition, sometimes publicity may create an intrusion on the lives …

Couples: Marriage, Civil Union, And Domestic Partnership, David L. Chambers Jan 2000

Couples: Marriage, Civil Union, And Domestic Partnership, David L. Chambers

Book Chapters

In this country, during the last decades of the twentieth century, thousands of lesbians married other women and thousands of gay men married other men. Many of these couples recited traditional vows in churches and synagogues. Others have pledged to each other in their own backyards in words that they wrote themselves. But not one of these thousands of solemn occasions was recognized as creating a legally valid marriage. In the United States, each state has its own statute defining who can marry, and as far as the states were concerned, these couples were playing dress up. One state has …

Linking Postsecondary Sub -Baccalaureate Institutional Experience To The Career Planning Needs Of Future Workforce., Joycelyn Harrison Brunswick

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Recent changes in the labor market and predictions by the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicate that many of the jobs available in the 21st century will not require a four-year college degree, in contrast to what many high school students perceive will provide their entree to a successful career. Jobs which will be in demand necessitate highly specialized skills which can be developed at post-secondary sub-baccalaureate (PSSB) institutions. High school graduates who do not have the ability, time, money or inclination to earn a bachelor's degree may well obtain economic security by acquiring those skills in great demand, enabling them …

Evaporation Reduction Potential In An Undisturbed Soil Irrigated With Surface Drip And Sand Tube Irrigation, Masoud Meshkat, Richard C. Warner, Stephen R. Workman Jan 2000

Evaporation Reduction Potential In An Undisturbed Soil Irrigated With Surface Drip And Sand Tube Irrigation, Masoud Meshkat, Richard C. Warner, Stephen R. Workman

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

The efficiency of drip irrigation is highly dependent on evaporation losses occurring from the constantly saturated soil beneath emitters. Advent of subsurface drip irrigation is in part an approach to curb this inefficiency. An irrigation method, Sand Tube Irrigation (STI), is proposed to increase the efficiency of “Normal” surface applied drip Irrigation (NI method) on permanent tree crops without the need for burying the irrigation tubing. The sand tube consists of removing a soil core beneath the emitter and filling the void with coarse sand. A weighing lysimeter was constructed in the laboratory and instrumented to directly measure temporal evaporation …

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Reports of malformed frogs were made to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) from different parts of Minnesota in 1993, 1995, 1996, and 1997 and one, nine, 190, and 172 reports were received, respectively. MPCA field crews and Drs. Hoppe and McKinnell documented malformed frog locations starting in 1993. By 1997, MPCA field crews documented malformed frogs at 62 locations in Minnesota, in 29 of 87 counties. Most malformations were in young metamorphs of Rana pipiens but they were observed also in R. clamitans, R. septentrionalis, R. sylvatica, Bufo americanus, and Hyla spp. Frequencies of malformations varied by time of …

Analysis Of The Relationship Between Student Satisfaction And Student Perception Of Interaction In A Compressed Video Setting, Monty E. Sullivan

Doctoral Dissertations

This study used subjects participating in courses offered via the statewide Louisiana Compressed Video Network for the purpose of analyzing the relationship between student perception of interaction and student satisfaction. A correlation analysis was used to determine the relationship between student perception of interaction (sixteen interaction directionalities) and student course satisfaction (including instructional, technical, and overall satisfaction). Data were collected using the Compressed Video Student Perception of Interaction Scale and the Compressed Video Course Student Satisfaction Scale. The nine correlations used to answer the nine research questions resulted in a considerable number of significant correlations. The data generally indicated that …

Graduate Record 2000: The Future Is Now., Southwestern Oklahoma State University

SWOSU Yearbooks

We waited for the world to end… It didn't happen. We watched the skies for catastrophic or miraculous events. The sky was empty. As the clock struck midnight on December 31, 1999, we were ready for whatever the world was going to throw our way. And the world balked. After months, even years, of weathering predictions of disaster and chaos descending with the advent of Year 2000, we got nothing. The worried analysts who said computers around the world would crash just looked like fools. The doomsday predictors didn't even have good excuses as to why nothing happened.

So we …

Rwanda, Burundi, And Their "Ethnic" Conflicts, Stephen B. Isabirye, Kooros M. Mahmoudi Jan 2000

Rwanda, Burundi, And Their "Ethnic" Conflicts, Stephen B. Isabirye, Kooros M. Mahmoudi

Ethnic Studies Review

This paper demonstrably dispels the assumption that ethnic conflict in Rwanda and Burundi is a chronic endemic phenomenon. It emphasizes the consolidation of the caste system during the colonial era, intra regional disparities within the two communities, high population densities, very weak economic bases, poverty, and international interference as some of the cardinal dynamics behind the current deadly contentions within the two states. An analysis behind the genocidal tendencies in the two countries is well illustrated, with special emphasis on the Rwandese tragedy of 1994 as well as its parallels and divergences with the Nazi Holocaust.

[Review Of] Eric Greene. Planet Of The Apes As American Myth: Race, Politics, And Popular Culture, George H. Junne Jr Jan 2000

[Review Of] Eric Greene. Planet Of The Apes As American Myth: Race, Politics, And Popular Culture, George H. Junne Jr

Ethnic Studies Review

Planet of the Apes (1968) was such a hit movie that it spawned several sequels. They included Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970), Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971), Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972), and Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973). In the 1974 television season CBS broadcast the series "Planet of the Apes." NBC followed with the animated Saturday morning series (September, 1975-September, 1976), "Return to the Planet of the Apes." Eric Greene clearly demonstrates that the Apes saga is little more than the support of the American myth of triumphalism: …

[Review Of] America Rodriguez. Making Latino News: Race, Language, Class, M. L. (Tony) Miranda

Ethnic Studies Review

This is an excellent book. In the writing of this edition the author has left little to be criticized. The only criticism that could be made is that most of her analysis focuses on Latino media in Los Angeles and Miami and glosses over other U.S. cities with large Latino populations, however she provides valid reasons for this.

State Ownership Of Copyrights In Primary Law Materials, Irina Y. Dmitrieva Jan 2000

State Ownership Of Copyrights In Primary Law Materials, Irina Y. Dmitrieva

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

Although the Copyright Act of 1976 provides no protection for works of the United States government, no similar prohibition exists for works of state or local governments. Similarly, under principles of international copyright law, works of state governments in the United States are not considered to be within the public domain unless explicitly provided by state statute or through statutory interpretation. Nevertheless, many states post their statutory and legislative materials on the Internet. This article demonstrates that over half of the fifty states provide for state copyright of official statutory compilations, court reports or administrative compilations. The author reviews the …

Financing Intellectual Property Under Revised Article 9: National And International Conflicts, Lorin Brennan Jan 2000

Financing Intellectual Property Under Revised Article 9: National And International Conflicts, Lorin Brennan

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

The policies underlying the creation and exploitation of intangible intellectual property differ sharply from those for manufacture and sale of tangible goods. Intellectual property law seeks to protect the creditor's ability to benefit by his endeavors; in contrast, laws governing tangible goods are concerned with the transferability and availability of such goods in the interest of efficiency. This paper argues that current laws, such as the recent revision of Article 9 of the Uniform Commercial Code ("Revised 9"), ignores the concept that effective financing of intellectual property could and should operate in conjunction with state personal property financing laws. The …
