Febrile Convulsions In Children, Saleh F. Al-Ajlouni, Imad H. Kodah
Febrile Convulsions In Children, Saleh F. Al-Ajlouni, Imad H. Kodah
Neurosciences
The term febrile convulsion is not a diagnostic entity. It simply describes any seizure that occurs in response to a febrile stimulus. It usually occurs between the age of 3 months and 5 years and occurs in 2-4% of young children. The typical febrile convulsion is a generalized tonic clonic seizure lasting between a few seconds and 15 minutes, followed by a period of drowsiness. Febrile seizures tend to occur in families, although the exact mode of inheritance is not known. Viruses are the most common cause of illness in children admitted to the hospital with a first febrile seizure. …

Influence Of The Rail Program On Bus Transit In Los Angeles, Richard Stanger
Influence Of The Rail Program On Bus Transit In Los Angeles, Richard Stanger
Journal of Public Transportation
In November 1980, voters in Los Angeles County, California, approved Proposition A, which stipulated a one-time, three-year rollback of bus fares to 50¢. Afterwards, at least 35 percent of the revenues had to be used for rail construction and operation (with a stated emphasis on construction). The program moved forward as called for, and by the early 1990s the Blue Line to Long Beach was in operation. The subway and an additional light rail line would both open by 1995. In the early 1990s, however, opponents of rail began a campaign to discredit the program using premature, distorted, and sometimes …
A Systems Model For Evaluating Transit Performance, Joanne M. Sulek, Mary R. Lind
A Systems Model For Evaluating Transit Performance, Joanne M. Sulek, Mary R. Lind
Journal of Public Transportation
The purpose of this study was to illustrate how a systems modeling approach to transit performance measurement can be used to integrate the issues of service quality, efficiency, and effectiveness. The mathematical formulation of the systems model developed in this article was used to construct a single transit performance metric that can be used by elected officials, transit system personnel, taxpayers, and other decision-makers to compare similar transit systems. In this study, the systems model was applied to a set of small transit systems operating in the United States. Results revealed that fewer than one-fourth of these systems were efficiently …

Anomalous Moisture Diffusion In Viscoelastic Polymers: Modeling And Testing, S. Roy, W. X. Xu, Seung Jong Park, K. M. Liechti
Anomalous Moisture Diffusion In Viscoelastic Polymers: Modeling And Testing, S. Roy, W. X. Xu, Seung Jong Park, K. M. Liechti
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
It is now well known that Fick's Law is frequently inadequate for describing moisture diffusion in polymers or polymer composites. Non-Fickian or anomalous diffusion typically occurs when the rates of diffusion and viscoelastic relaxation in a polymer are comparable, and the ambient temperature is below the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the polymer. As a result, it is necessary to take into account the time-dependent response of a polymer, analogous to viscoelastic relaxation of mechanical properties, in constructing such a model. In this paper, a simple yet robust methodology is proposed that would allow characterization of non-Fickian diffusion coefficients from …

Double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) accumulates in virus-infected mammalian cells and signals the activation of host defense pathways of the interferon system. We describe here a novel form of dsRNA-triggered signaling that leads to the stimulation of the p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38 MAPK) and the c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase (JNK) and of their respective activators MKK3/6 and SEK1/MKK4. The dsRNA-dependent signaling to p38 MAPK was largely intact in cells lacking both RNase L and the dsRNA-activated protein kinase (PKR), i.e., the two best-characterized mediators of dsRNA-triggered antiviral responses. In contrast, activation of both MKK4 and JNK by dsRNA was greatly …

Time And Money: One State's Regulation Of Check-Based Loans, Deborah A. Schmedemann
Faculty Scholarship
This article, which is part narrative and part essay, describes one professor's experience working on “check cashing” (or “check-based loans”) cases at the Appalachian Research and Defense Fund in eastern Kentucky. Parts I and II describe the typical check-based loan transaction and its effects on low-income consumers. Part III recounts how the law of check-based loans has developed in Kentucky, during the professor’s time there and since. Part IV sets forth some observations about language and legal process, suggested by the preceding narrative.
Confronting Constitutional Contradictions : A Study Of The War On Drugs In America, W. Steven Edmonds
Confronting Constitutional Contradictions : A Study Of The War On Drugs In America, W. Steven Edmonds
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Of the people, by the people, for the people stated in the Declaration of Independence in 1776 is what the framers of the Constitution had in mind. It was the intention to establish a framework that would create sound and just government. It held a bill of rights that provided examples for the world to follow. Unfortunately, the United States fails its own declaration when considering some of its policy and legislation. When examining drug policy, it is apparent that these laws were not of the people, by the people, or for the people, and in fact are contrary to …
Insurance Contracts And Judicial Decisions Over Whether Insurers Must Defend Insureds That Violate Constitutional And Civil Rights: An Historical And Empirical Review Of Federal And State Court Declaratory Judgments 1900-2000, Willy E. Rice
Faculty Articles
Empirical findings suggest that extralegal factors, such as geographic location, ethnicity, gender, disability, perceived sexual orientation, and age of third-party victims, influence judicial decisions as to whether liability carriers must defend or reimburse the costs of defending various lawsuits. After the introduction, Part II of this article presents a brief discussion of state and federal declaratory judgment statutes and of the public policy behind liability and indemnification insurance contracts. Part III examines the origin and scope of insurers’ duty to defend, duty to pay legal expenses, and duty to reimburse litigation costs when third-party victims sue policyholders. Part IV argues …

Role Of Neurotropins In Rat Embryonic Testis Morphogenesis (Cord Formation), Elena Levine, Andrea S. Cupp, Michael K. Skinner
Role Of Neurotropins In Rat Embryonic Testis Morphogenesis (Cord Formation), Elena Levine, Andrea S. Cupp, Michael K. Skinner
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
The process of seminiferous cord formation is the first morphological event that differentiates a testis from an ovary and indicates male sex determination. Cord formation occurs by embryonic Day 14 (Day 0 5 plug date; E14) in the rat. A series of experiments were conducted to determine if neurotropins and their receptors are important for the process of rat embryonic cord formation. The expression of low affinity neurotropin receptor (p75/LNGFR) was determined by immunohistochemistry on sections of both testis and ovary from E13 through birth (Day 0, P0) with an antibody to p75/LNGFR. The staining for p75/ LNGFR was present …
