Resisting Globalization: Notes On The Seattle Uprising, Steven Pfaff

Sociology Faculty Books and Book Chapters

"The world seems to have been startled by recent events in Seattle. Between November 29th and December 3rd the city was gripped by unexpectedly powerful protests against the World Trade Organization meeting in the city. By now the conflict and chaos into which the conference descended - both in the streets outside the Washington State Convention Center and within it - are widely acknowledged. Not only did the WTO fail to agree upon an agenda for the next round of international trade liberalization and left the city in frustration, but Seattle presented a picture of urban protest rarely seen since …

The Perceptions Of Male And Female Western Australian Adolescents In Relation To Body Image And Smoking, Mary Edwards Jan 2000

The Perceptions Of Male And Female Western Australian Adolescents In Relation To Body Image And Smoking, Mary Edwards

Theses : Honours

Although the numbers of adult smokers has declined, numbers of adolescent smokers have not, with females outnumbering males. Research has indicated that adolescent females have higher levels of body image dissatisfaction than males. This dissatisfaction is mostly with regard to weight, which suggests a possible association between female adolescents smoking and weight control. A study of American adolescents (Camp, Klesges & Relyea, 1993) found that adolescent females were more likely to perceive that smoking is a method of weight control and to use smoking to control their weight than adolescent males. This present study investigated the perceptions of625 Western Australian …

Men's Health: How Men Understand The Concept Of Health And How This Understanding Shapes Actions, Craig T. Thompson Jan 2000

Men's Health: How Men Understand The Concept Of Health And How This Understanding Shapes Actions, Craig T. Thompson

Theses : Honours

The purpose of this research was to explore how men understand the concept of health, and how this understanding shapes actions. This dissertation developed as a result of both working at a Community Health Centre, and having an awareness that in Australia, statistics indicate that men's health is steadily deteriorating. A theoretical framework implementing the concepts of health, socialisation (masculinity) and cognition was utilised to guide the research. The research involved interviewing six male participants, who were university students ranging in age from 20 to 40 years. Participants were questioned regarding their perceptions of health and health management. Interview transcripts …

Wreath-Laying In Poet's Corner, Westminster Abbey, Chris Smith Jan 2000

Wreath-Laying In Poet's Corner, Westminster Abbey, Chris Smith

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

The Guest of Honour was The Rt Hon. Chris Smith, MP, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport. The Address he gave is summarized below:

Mr. Smith is a great admirer of George Eliot and it is said that he takes with him on holiday each year one of George Eliot's novels! He began by noting that he was standing next to the memorial stone to Henry James and he reminded us of James's admiration for George Eliot. Henry James wrote on 5 March 1873 'a marvellous mind throbs in every page of Middlemarch. It raises the standard of …

Annual Report 1999, Kathleen Adams

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

During 1999 we were unusually busy in planning the extra events to take place in 2000. Before I began this report I had spent a few weeks updating the Story of the George Eliot Fellowship which had been published for our fiftieth anniversary in 1980 and now needed a further 20 busy years added. So, as I began the report of activities for 1999 I had many other years buzzing around in my head. However, 1999 is now clear of those seventy years, and I am happy to begin with the news that 1999 was another profitable year for the …

First Amendment On Trial-The Libel Lawyer's Perspective, David M. Skover Jan 2000

First Amendment On Trial-The Libel Lawyer's Perspective, David M. Skover

Seattle University Law Review

In several significant ways, this event is a first. It is the first symposium to be held in Seattle University School of Law since the recent dedication of our magnificent new building. It is the first symposium of its kind ever to be held in the great Northwest. Furthermore, law school and law review symposia typically focus more on free speech theory than they do on the First Amendment in practice. As the Seattle University Law Review will be transcribing and publishing an account of this event, I thought it would be interesting to do a quick electronic search for …

Death Resurrected: The Reimplementation Of The Federal Death Penalty, Christopher Q. Cutler

Seattle University Law Review

This Comment analyzes the federal death penalty. Part one discusses the history of the federal death penalty, from its roots in the superstitions and religious dogma of colonial America to the Drug Kingpin Act and the Federal Death Penalty Act of 1994. Part two examines the Drug Kingpin Act, the first federal move into the death penalty arena since the landmark Supreme Court case of Furman v. Georgia. Next, the Comment explores Congress' broad expansion of the federal death penalty in its most recent statute, the Federal Death Penalty Act of 1994. Part four examines the practical application of …

Teachnology: Linking Teaching And Technology In Faculty Development, Mei-Yau Shih, Mary Deane Sorcinelli

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

As a coordinator of teaching technologies and director of a center for teaching in a large research university, we have worked collaboratively over the last year to achieve a common goal: to implement and refine several faculty development initiatives that create linkages among the domains of teaching, learning, and technology. In this case study, we will describe the kinds of programs we’ve developedand summarize lessons we’ve learned. We hope that faculty developers on other campuses who are grappling with how to define their mission related to technology and how to work with faculty to integrate teaching and technology can adapt …

Faculty Teaching Partners And Associates: Engaging Faculty As Leaders In Instructional Development, Myra S. Wilhite, Joyce Povlacs Lunde, Gail F. Latta

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Special interest discussion groups provide opportunities for faculty to address specific instructional issues in a variety of areas including technology, distance learning, general teaching topics, pre-tenure issues, honors teaching, and the like. In 1995, to leverage the Teaching and Learning Center’s resources, outstanding classroom teachers were invited to provide leadership for discussion groups by serving as Partners or Associates. This chapter describes how an inexpensive faculty discussion-group leadership program maximizes a teaching improvement center’s resources, makes innovative teaching visible, and provides peer models for other faculty while helping promote an overall institutional culture that actively supports teaching excellence.

Faculty Development Centers In Research Universities: A Study Of Resources And Programs, Delivee L. Wright Jan 2000

Faculty Development Centers In Research Universities: A Study Of Resources And Programs, Delivee L. Wright

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

The purpose of this study was to compile updated information on resources and programs of faculty/instructional development centers in Carnegie classification Research I and Research II universities. It allows centers across the country to see where they stand in regard to a number of specific aspects of center operation. Size of institution, mission, resources, budgets, and staffing vary greatly, while activities and services have a greater degree of similarity. The data reveal a number of questions for further study and discussion.

The Appeal Of Therapeutic Jurisprudence, Shirley S. Abrahamson Jan 2000

The Appeal Of Therapeutic Jurisprudence, Shirley S. Abrahamson

Seattle University Law Review

If therapeutic jurisprudence is so good, its applicability should not be limited to the trial courts. This Article offers some examples of how appellate courts can join the trial courts in applying therapeutic jurisprudence, but it also raises some concerns.

The Power Of Myth: A Comment On Des Rosiers' Therapeutic Jurisprudence And Appellate Adjudication, Edward A. Dauer Jan 2000

The Power Of Myth: A Comment On Des Rosiers' Therapeutic Jurisprudence And Appellate Adjudication, Edward A. Dauer

Seattle University Law Review

In the American legal system, the myths surrounding judicial decision-making may pose significant impediments to achieving therapeutic jurisprudence. Courts, we are taught, are confined to the preexisting law, applying it to the conflict as the law itself requires that the conflict be framed. This is, in many ways that matter, a belief system that is not conducive to the therapeutic jurisprudence way.

Therapeutic Jurisprudence And The Appellate Courts: Possibilities, Linda M. Mcgee Jan 2000

Therapeutic Jurisprudence And The Appellate Courts: Possibilities, Linda M. Mcgee

Seattle University Law Review

Therapeutic jurisprudence has multiple possibilities, provided it does not add another layer of cost, delay, and time to the process. First, we should see "a reduced number of cases for the appellate court to decide, fewer remands and secondary appeals, the streamlining of appeals through partial resolution of issues, the satisfaction of parties' underlying needs and interests, and the reduction of the time a case spends on appeal." Second, the outcome does not have to become part of the case law that applies to similar cases, possibly establishing negative precedent. Third, mediation allows personal healing and the development of positive, …

Cyberspace And The "Devil's Hatband", Jonathan J. Rusch Jan 2000

Cyberspace And The "Devil's Hatband", Jonathan J. Rusch

Seattle University Law Review

In this Article, I maintain that while there is an ongoing conflict of legal traditions over the desirability of fences in cyberspace, there are definite virtues in the creation of such fences, so long as we understand the physical, psychological, and moral dimensions of that process. Part I will present a brief survey of the history of barbed wire in the Old West, paying particular attention to the contending legal traditions that affected the manner and extent of that growth in the West. These contending legal traditions, which related to "fencing in" versus "fencing out" cattle, played a key role …

Direct-To-Consumer Advertising Of Prescription Drugs: After A Decade Of Speculation, Courts Consider Another Exception To The Learned Intermediary Rule, Mae Joanne Rosok Jan 2000

Direct-To-Consumer Advertising Of Prescription Drugs: After A Decade Of Speculation, Courts Consider Another Exception To The Learned Intermediary Rule, Mae Joanne Rosok

Seattle University Law Review

This Comment will explore whether Washington courts should recognize direct-to-consumer advertising as an exception to the learned intermediary rule. With the ultimate goal of advocating the best protection for the consumer, the discussion will suggest that Washington courts should not create an exception. A review of other exceptions to the learned intermediary rule does not support abandoning the doctrine when a drug company advertises its product directly to consumers. Nevertheless, advertising does affect consumer purchases and does influence consumer choices, and drug companies should accept the responsibility to present balanced information. This responsibility should encompass more than meeting the minimum …
