Somatic Embryogenesis From Mature Seed Cultures Of Pistacia Atlantica, Ahmet Onay Jan 2000

Somatic Embryogenesis From Mature Seed Cultures Of Pistacia Atlantica, Ahmet Onay

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Embryogenic mass was produced from kernels of mature fruits of Pistacia atlantica cultured in liquid Murashige and Skoog media, supplemented with 100 mg/l casein hydrolysate, 100 mg/l l-ascorbic acid, and benzylaminopurine (BAP). Embryogenic mass-es were differentiated directly from the kernel explants after culture for 3 weeks in liquid medium with 0.5-4 mg/l benzylaminop-urine. After transfer of the embryogenic masses into the same medium, but after a few subcultures with benzylaminopurine, somat-ic embryos appeared. Clusters of somatic embryos were transferred to the agar solidified MS medium for maturation. Matured somatic embryos, germinated on the maturation medium without growth regulators, developed into …

Growth And Variations In Proline, Sodium, Chloride, Phosphorus And Potassium Concentrations Of Chickpea ( Cicer Arietinuml. Cvs.) Varieties Under Salinity Stress, Hesna Özcan, Murat Ali̇ Turan, Özlem Koç, Yakup Çikili, Süleyman Taban

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Under salinity stress, growth and variations in proline, Na, Cl, P and K concentrations of three chickpea varieties (Canitez- 87, ILC-195/2 and Damla), which are cultivated widely in Turkey, were investigated. For this purpose, experimental soil was salinized with 68 mmol kg ^{-1}NaCl. The salinity responses of chickpea varieties were compared by means of various plant parameters. According to the results, Damla was affected by salinity stress much more than Canitez-87 and ILC-195/2 cultivars. However, under salinity stress, the dry weight of the Damla variety was influenced much less than the others. Sodium and Cl contents were generally found to …

Surviving The Flood: Plastron Respiration In The Non-Tracheate Arthropod Phrynus Marginemaculatus (Amblypygi: Arachnida), Eileen Hebets, Reginald F. Chapman Jan 2000

Surviving The Flood: Plastron Respiration In The Non-Tracheate Arthropod Phrynus Marginemaculatus (Amblypygi: Arachnida), Eileen Hebets, Reginald F. Chapman

Eileen Hebets Publications

Specimens of Phrynus marginemaculatus can remain responsive when submerged in water for more than 24 hours. Behavioral data indicate that P. marginemaculatus utilizes dissolved oxygen from the surrounding water. Scanning electron miscroscopy and light microscope sections show cuticular modifications for plastron respiration. All previous examples of plastron respiration have involved animals with tracheal systems, but amblypygids respire through the use of two pairs of book lungs. This study provides the first example of plastron respiration not only in the order Amblypygi, but also, in any non-tracheate arthropod.

En Banc Revisited, Michael B. Abramowicz Jan 2000

En Banc Revisited, Michael B. Abramowicz

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Legal commentators have proposed a variety of solutions to the perceived problems of the U.S. courts of appeals, from splitting large circuits to assuring partisan balance in panel decisions. They have always assumed, however, that judges a particular appellate court should have sole responsibility for creating the law of that circuit, except when caseload pressures make it necessary to borrow visiting judges. In this Essay, Professor Abramowicz proposes using visiting judges in a more important role: en banc decision-making. Under this proposal, en banc decisions for one circuit would be made entirely by courts of appeals judges randomly selected from …

Exit, Voice, And Values On The Net, Dawn C. Nunziato Jan 2000

Exit, Voice, And Values On The Net, Dawn C. Nunziato

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Professor Lawrence Lessig makes the (rather dire) prediction in Code and Other Laws of Cyberspace that the Internet will be transformed from an unregulated medium into a highly regulated one. Lessig posits that the Net will largely be regulated not by the government but by commercial entities - in particular, by the software (or code) written by entities such as AOL and IBM. While the government's regulatory power is limited by the Constitution, regulation by commercial entities is not. For example, Internet service providers can censor "indecent" speech on the Net largely free of constitutional constraints. The "Net libertarians" applaud …

Expression Of A Dominant-Negative Mutant Of P21ras Inhibits Induction Of Nitric Oxide Synthase And Activation Of Nuclear Factor-Kb In Primary Astrocytes, Kalipada Pahan, Xiaojuan Lu, Michael J. Mckinney, Charles Wood, Faruk G. Sheikh, John R. Raymond Jan 2000

Expression Of A Dominant-Negative Mutant Of P21ras Inhibits Induction Of Nitric Oxide Synthase And Activation Of Nuclear Factor-Kb In Primary Astrocytes, Kalipada Pahan, Xiaojuan Lu, Michael J. Mckinney, Charles Wood, Faruk G. Sheikh, John R. Raymond

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

The present study underlines the importance of p21ras in regulating the inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in primary astrocytes. Bacterial lipopolysaccharides induced the GTP loading of p21ras, and the expression of a dominant-negative mutant of p21ras (Dp21ras) inhibited lipopolysaccharide-induced GTP loading in rat primary astrocytes. To delineate the role of p21ras in the induction of iNOS, we examined the effect of Dp21ras on the expression of iNOS and the production of nitric oxide. It is interesting that expression of Dp21ras markedly inhibited the production of nitric oxide and the expression of iNOS in lipopolysaccharide- and pro-inflammatory cytokine (tumor necrosis factor-a, …

Visual Communication And Entertainment Through Animation, James T. Hamrock

Graduate Research Papers

Virtual animation is used today for everything including entertainment in motion pictures and video games, advertising on television and the internet, virtual animated videos used for industrial teaching aids, and project approvals for major building construction. How Telecommunications Is Assisting The United States In Adult Educational Distance Learning Programs, Telemedicine, And Future Applications, Minna Ann Harrison

Graduate Research Papers

The future of telecommunications becomes more unpredictable every passing day. Products and services that were just dreamed of in the past, only six months to a year ago, are here and ready to be used in everyday life. Wireless service has been affected by PCS providers who are offering services to customers that are considerably cheaper. Voice recognition programs/applications were only being bounced around in 1997, but currently are being used at work places and homes. At the 1998 Comdex technology trade show six major software companies were promoting their voice recognition programs.

There are some glitches still. But as …

Student-Led Conferences : A Better Way, Beverly A. Maronn Jan 2000

Student-Led Conferences : A Better Way, Beverly A. Maronn

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this journal article is to inform teachers and administrators of a better way to conduct student-led conferences. The typical format is to hold these conferences in a small, advisory setting. This paper describes an alternative format, a "homeroom" arrangement, in which one teacher is available to facilitate the conferences of 12-20 students. The staff at Harlan Community Middle School has found that a large group, everybody together-type setting works better. The gym/commons/media center location alleviates many of the problems associated with the small group setting.

Continuous cultures of bovine trophectoderm (CT-1 and CT- 5) and bovine endoderm (CE-1 and CE-2) were initiated and maintained on STO feeder cells. CT-1 and CT-5 were derived from the culture of intact, 10- to 11-day in vitro-produced blastocysts. CE-1 and CE-2 were derived from the culture of immunodissected inner cell masses of 7- to 8-day in vitro-produced blastocysts. The cultures were routinely passaged by physical dissociation. Although morphologically distinct, the trophectoderm and endoderm both grew as cell sheets of polarized epithelium (dome formations) composed of approximately cuboidal cells. Both cell types, particularly the endoderm, grew on top …

Future Of Adr - The Earl F. Nelson Memorial Lecture, The, Frank E. A. Sander

Journal of Dispute Resolution

Because I've been fortunate to observe the ADR scene for much of its recent development, I'm often asked my views of where we stand now. My somewhat flip answer is, "On Monday, Wednesday and Friday, I think we've made amazing progress. On Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, ADR seems more like a grain of sand on the adversary system beach." So I think we have a way to go. Let me try to elaborate a little on those thoughts
