The Relationship Between Mexican-American Parenting Styles, Level Of Acculturation, And Incidence Of Stress And Reports Of Child Abuse, Patricia Rocio Huerta-Perales

Theses Digitization Project

The parenting style, level of acculturation and incidence of stress, were explored in order to identify the likelihood of intervention by child protective services to prevent child abuse. Additionally, concerns of whether reports of child abuse were related more to the lack of information about American parenting rules, rather than intentionally abusive behavior.

The Next Generation: A Look At Where Today's Enterprise Resource Planning (Erp) Systems Came From And Where Technology Is Heading, Lance Ronald Lenhert

Theses Digitization Project

"Currently, the largest barrier to any given market usually involves capital. If a company does not have enough investment capital to start with, it could fail before it even gets started. However, there is a new component that affects some of the largest corporations in the world. The problem relates to being able to sustain current internal processing, as well as adapt and grow in new markets with higher volumes. There are systems out there today that claim to address these issues along with e-commerce and other electronic sharing of information."

The Skn7 Response Regulator Of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Interacts With Hsf1 In Vivo And Is Required For The Induction Of Heat Shock Genes By Oxidative Stress, Desmond C. Raitt, Anthony L. Johnson, Alexander M. Erkine, Kozo Makino, Brian Morgan, David S. Gross, Leland H. Johnston

Scholarship and Professional Work – COPHS

The Skn7 response regulator has previously been shown to play a role in the induction of stress-responsive genes in yeast, e.g., in the induction of the thioredoxin gene in response to hydrogen peroxide. The yeast Heat Shock Factor, Hsf1, is central to the induction of another set of stress-inducible genes, namely the heat shock genes. These two regulatory trans-activators, Hsf1 and Skn7, share certain structural homologies, particularly in their DNA-binding domains and the presence of adjacent regions of coiled-coil structure, which are known to mediate protein–protein interactions. Here, we provide evidence that Hsf1 and Skn7 interact in vitro and …

Crime, Punishment, And Romero: An Analysis Of The Case Against California's Three Strikes Law, Brian P. Janiskee, Edward J. Erler

Duquesne Law Review

In a well-received study, Crime and Punishment in California: The Impact of Three Strikes and You're Out, Franklin E. Zimring, Sam Kamin, and Gordon Hawkins assert that California's Three Strikes law has failed to deter crime. The authors submit that the study has not provided sufficient statistical evidence to prove that Three Strikes does not deter crime. The authors argue that the statistical methodology employed in the study was flawed, and that this flaw created a distorted view of the deterrent effect of Three Strikes. The authors do not attempt to demonstrate that Three Strikes deters crime; however, they …

Old Myths And New Realities: Uncovering The Implications Of Senator J. William Fulbright's Middle East Peace Plan, Angie Maxwell

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

On August 24, 1970, Senator J. William Fulbright presented the speech "Old Myths and New Realities II: The Middle East" to the United States Senate. The intent of this paper is to uncover the significant implications of Senator Fulbright's delivery of this particular speech at this particular moment in American History. In brief, Fulbright proposed a bilateral agreement between the United States and Israel, whereby Israel would return the conquered Arab lands of the I967 War in exchange for military protection from the United States. The speech, when taken out of context, provides a fairly simple plan to initiate peace …

Journeys: The Interpretation Of Modern Myth Through Art, Karen V. Dick Jan 2000

Journeys: The Interpretation Of Modern Myth Through Art, Karen V. Dick

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

"Journeys" primarily investigates the interpretation of one form of expression to another; i.e., the visual interpretation of myth through an in terms of the contemporary individual's psychological voyage. The basis for this study comes from the writings of noted scholar Joseph Campbell and others who place myth in the position of the inward, not the outward journey in the quest for human discovery. As Bill Moyers so eloquently states in The Power of Myth. "myths are the stories of our search through the ages for truth, for meaning, for significance. We all need to tell our story and to understand …

Comparing Nca Standards And School-To-Work: Standards Based Foundations For The High School Communication Classroom, David Wendt, Melissa L. Beall Jan 2000

Comparing Nca Standards And School-To-Work: Standards Based Foundations For The High School Communication Classroom, David Wendt, Melissa L. Beall

Iowa Journal of Communication

The authors explore ways School-to-Work ideology and the NCA K-12 standards can be used in the classroom. They first call for an educational reform that is both student-centered as well as teacher-centered. It is argued that skills needed in the workplace correlate well with the N CA standards, and traditional exercises and projects can be utilized to cover the learning and application of communication skills. The authors then provide sample activities to help teachers make the connection between NCA standards and School-to-Career strategies.
