Mutational Analysis Of The Tra Locus Of The Broad-Host-Range Streptomyces Plasmid Pij101, Gregg S. Pettis, Stanley N. Cohen

Faculty Publications

The tra gene of Streptomyces lividans plasmid pIJ101 encodes a 621- amino-acid protein that can mediate both plasmid transfer and the interbacterial transfer of chromosomal genes (i.e., chromosome-mobilizing ability [Cma]) during mating. Here we report the results of in-frame insertional mutagenesis studies aimed at defining regions of Tra required for these functions. While hexameric linker insertions throughout the tra gene affected plasmid and chromosomal gene transfer, insertions in a 200-amino- acid region of the Tra protein that contains presumed nucleotide-binding motifs and that is widely conserved among a functionally diverse family of bacterial and plasmid proteins (K. Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

Pseudomonas syringae is a member of an important group of Gram-negative bacterial pathogens of plants and animals that depend on a type III secretion system to inject virulence effector proteins into host cells. In P. syringae, hrpyhrc genes encode the Hrp (type III secretion) system, and avirulence (avr) and Hrpdependent outer protein (hop) genes encode effector proteins. The hrpyhrc genes of P. syringae pv syringae 61, P. syringae pv syringae B728a, and P. syringae pv tomato DC3000 are flanked by an exchangeable effector locus and …

Comparison Of Health Promotion Behaviors And Performance On The Navy Physical Readiness Test Among Active Duty Shipboard Personnel With And Without Anterior Knee Pain, Robin Theresa Mckenzie Phd, Msn, Rn Aug 2000

Comparison Of Health Promotion Behaviors And Performance On The Navy Physical Readiness Test Among Active Duty Shipboard Personnel With And Without Anterior Knee Pain, Robin Theresa Mckenzie Phd, Msn, Rn

Dissertations

Health promotion is the number one health priority of the nation, yet, health promoting behaviors (HPB) are rarely part of the management plan for persons with anterior knee pain (AKP). In an active duty military population, AKP can interfere with performance on the required, semi-annual physical readiness test (PRT). The purpose of this descriptive, comparative study was to compare the relationships among HPB, AKP and performance on the PRT between two groups of active duty Navy shipboard personnel (those with AKP and those without AKP). Pender's (1996) Health Promotion Model (HPM) served as the theoretical framework. Subjects completed demographic and …

The Social Impacts Of Condominium Conversion In The Vieux Carré Neighborhood, New Orleans, La, Randi Kaufman Aug 2000

The Social Impacts Of Condominium Conversion In The Vieux Carré Neighborhood, New Orleans, La, Randi Kaufman

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In order to better understand the effects of condominium conversions, this study explores the nature and extent of the conversion trend, and its social impacts on the Vieux Carré neighborhood. The increasing number of conversions in the Vieux Carré, also known as the French Quarter, has been the focus of recent controversy and has been perceived by many residents as a threat to the viability of the historic district as a neighborhood. Long-term Vieux Carré residents and neighborhood organizations have expressed fears that the converted rental units are being used as short-term rentals to tourists or second homes, which may …

An Investigation Into The Effect Of The Compression Algorithm In The Presence Of Shifting And Cropping On Image Quality, Ornsiri Thonggoom Aug 2000

An Investigation Into The Effect Of The Compression Algorithm In The Presence Of Shifting And Cropping On Image Quality, Ornsiri Thonggoom

Theses

Image compression is a form of data compression frequently used in digital imaging applications to improve the efficiency of transmission and storage. In order to have a manageable file size, the data compression is lossy, i.e. image information is lost. Lossy compression algorithms such as Baseline JPEG use the insensitivity of the human eye to high frequency information as a basis for the compression. Discrete cosine transforms (DCT) are performed on the data followed by variable quantization. And the image blocking has no exact regulations for the spatial variation. Using this technique, information is lost and the decompressed image is …

The Role Of Public Policy In Skills Development Of Black Workers In The 21st Century, Timothy J. Bartik, Kevin Hollenbeck Aug 2000

The Role Of Public Policy In Skills Development Of Black Workers In The 21st Century, Timothy J. Bartik, Kevin Hollenbeck

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

This paper discusses the role of public policy in the skills development system of the U.S. It further examines the implications of that policy for the skill development and career progression of black workers. The paper describes the current "system" for skills development in the United States as a two- tiered system: The "first-chance" or conventional system allows individuals to proceed through an extensive public elementary, secondary, and postsecondary educational sector that is supplemented by private educational institutions and is followed by employer-provided job training and work experience. The "second-chance" system is designed for individuals who do not successfully traverse …

Development Of A Photoinitiator Blend For Uv Cured Inks And Coatings, Madhu Bansal

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study is to develop a new standard blend of photoinitiators, having properties of low odor, high solubility, faster curing, and being efficient for pigmented as well as for clear systems. In the process, we expect to understand the behavior of mixtures of photoinitiators and their resulting UV spectra. An important first step is to prepare different blend with different photoinitiator and characterize them on cure basis. Curing properties were studied by the KMnO4 yellow stain density test. The absorption range in the UV spectra was measured for each Photoinitiator with methanol and acrylate as background …

Building A Better Briton: Parliament's Push For State-Funded Secondary Schools, 1901-1903, Jason K. Burnett

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The first three years of the twentieth century were a crucial time in the development of state-funded education in England. The rising tide of Germanophobia in the wake of the South African War impressed Conservative politicians with the need to improve England's educational system in order that she remain competitive in the world. With the aid of a very few Liberal imperialists, the Conservatives were able to shepherd through a series of bills which established state funded secondary schools throughout all of England, an expansion on the system created by the Education Act of 1870 in terms of both curriculum …

The Victim Rights Movement: A Social Constructionist Examination, Angela Renee Evans Aug 2000

The Victim Rights Movement: A Social Constructionist Examination, Angela Renee Evans

Dissertations

What has been termed the victim rights movement has made great progress in promoting legislative changes regarding victim rights in the United States. This research examines the victim rights movement from a social constructionist perspective by focusing on two pieces of federal legislation passed in the 1980s: the Victim and Witness Protection Act of 1982 and the Victims of Crime Act of 1984. Using the social constructionist perspective, the research examines who was involved in the claims-making activities and which claims were most likely to be heard and acted upon. Rather than seeing social movements as the result of some …

Crystallization And Structure Determination Of The Catalytic Trimer Of Methanococcus Jannaschii Aspartate Transcarbamoylase, Jacqueline Vitali, Tatyana Vorobyova, Gordon Websterb, Evan R. Kantrowitza

Physics Faculty Publications

Aspartate transcarbamoylase (ATCase) catalyzes the first step in the pyrimidine biosynthetic pathway, the reaction between carbamoyl phosphate and L-aspartate to form N-carbamoyl-L-aspartate and phosphate. The structural analysis of the ATCase catalytic trimer from Methanococcus jannaschii, a unicellular thermophilic archaeabacterium, has been undertaken in order to gain insight into the structural features that are responsible for the thermostability of the enzyme. As a first step, the catalytic trimer was crystallized in space group R32, with unit-cell parameters a = b = 265.3, c = 195.5 Å and two trimers in the asymmetric unit. Its structure was determined using …

Childcare And Experiential Knowledge: Expanding Definitions Of Childcare, Lori L. Mcneil Aug 2000

Childcare And Experiential Knowledge: Expanding Definitions Of Childcare, Lori L. Mcneil

Dissertations

Childcare is traditionally defined as care for children while their parents/guardians are in the workforce or attending school. While technically accurate, it is argued that traditional definitions of childcare are partial and consequently do not fully describe childcare based on an experiential dimension. Thus, this research project sought to augment normative definitions of childcare by including the voices of children in childcare, parents using childcare and those caregivers providing childcare.

Several theoretical frameworks were used for this research. First, standpoint theory (Harding, 1987) was presented in order to inform an alternative perspective of childcare based on “experiential” rather than “expert” …

Capital Punishment: A New Perspective On Race And Ethnic Differences In Punishment And Death Sentence Outcomes, Martin G. Urbina Aug 2000

Capital Punishment: A New Perspective On Race And Ethnic Differences In Punishment And Death Sentence Outcomes, Martin G. Urbina

Dissertations

A review of the existing literature on death sentence outcomes (i.e., executions, commutations) shows evidence of discrimination against minority defendants (e.g., African Americans). Prior studies, however, have followed a Caucasian/African American and/or execution/commutation approach. Latino defendants have either been excluded or treated as a monolithic group. Thus, little is known about death sentence outcomes for Latinos, whose experiences differ from those of African Americans and Caucasians. Additionally, little is known about the treatment of the various ethnic groups (e.g., Cubans, Mexicans) that constitute the Latino community. And, since the focus has been on executions and/or commutations, little is known about …

Relationship Between Cutting Parameters And Bit Geometry In Rotary Cutting, Srikanth Addala Aug 2000

Relationship Between Cutting Parameters And Bit Geometry In Rotary Cutting, Srikanth Addala

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The main objective of this research was to investigate the relationship between cutting parameters (cutting force, penetration force, specific energy, specific respirable dust) and the bit geometry parameters (angle of the bit tip, bit tip size and shape of the bit) in order to reduce the amount of specific respirable dust generated and the specific energy consumed in rotary cutting. In the cutting process when two grooves are made in the rock at certain spacing, a land/ridge is formed between the two adjacent grooves. If that land/ridge can be removed in a cutting cycle, then a clean surface will be …
