Consistency Of Findings Across International Surveys Of Mathematics And Science Achievement: A Comparison Of Iaep2 And Timss, Michael O'Leary, Thomas Kellaghan, George F. Madaus, Albert F. Beaton

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

The investigation reported in here was prompted by discrepancies between the performance of Irish students on two international tests of science achievement: the Second International Assessment of Educational Progress (IAEP2) administered in 1991 and the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) administered in 1995. While average science achievement for Irish 13-year-olds was reported to be at the low end of the distribution representing the 20 participating countries in IAEP2, it was around the middle of the distribution representing the 40 or so countries that participated in TIMSS at grades 7 and 8. An examination of the effect sizes associated …

Fermentation Strategies For Recombinant Protein Expression In The Methylotrophic Yeast Pichia Pastoris, Wenhui Zhang, Mehmet Inan, Michael M. Meagher

Papers in Biochemical Engineering

Fermentation strategies for recombinant protein production in Pichia pastoris have been investigated and are reviewed here. Characteristics of the expression system, such as phenotypes and carbon utilization, are summarized. Recently reported results such as growth model establishment, application of a methanol sensor, optimization of substrate feeding strategy, DOstat controller design, mixed feed technology, and perfusion and continuous culture are discussed in detail.

Mass Media Theory And Women's Zines On The World Wide Web, Jennifer Elaine Wagaman Aug 2000

Mass Media Theory And Women's Zines On The World Wide Web, Jennifer Elaine Wagaman

Communication

Two mass media theories, 'Spiral of Silence theory' and 'Uses and Gratifications theory, ' have been used to explain and evaluate media usage from a feminist perspective. These theories both succeed and fail when used to analyze the World Wide Web as a mass medium. In order to effectively examine so-called 'fringe' groups and their publications on the Web, a new theory is needed that considers the more user-driven interface that the Internet and the World Wide Web provide for users. Using a modest case study of women's Web zines, (online underground magazines) this paper attempts to show how some …

Chemo-Ecological And Evolutionary Aspects Of The Pollinator Reward System In Clusia Grandiflora (Clusiaceae), John Lokvam Aug 2000

Chemo-Ecological And Evolutionary Aspects Of The Pollinator Reward System In Clusia Grandiflora (Clusiaceae), John Lokvam

Agriculture and Horticulture

The dioecious, neotropical plant species Clusia grandiflora produces two major pools of secondary metabolites, latex and floral resin. Latex serves as a defense against herbivory and floral resin as a pollinator reward. This reward is gathered by bees who use it as a nest construction material. Nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectral studies show that C. grandiflora latex and resin share two classes of compounds, poly-isoprenylated benzophenones and tocotrienoic acids as major or minor components. The close chemical correspondence between latex and resin indicate that they are evolutionarily related. Though the tocotrienes were not found to have biological activity, benzophenones …
