On Logistic And Some New Discrimination Rules:Charecterizations,Inference And Application., Supratik Roy Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Introduction and Summary Consider the problem of classification of an observation into one of two specified populations. Fisher's classification rale, just as several other rules commonly used in practice, depends only on the ratio of the individual densities fi(x), i = 1,2. This led Cox (1966),/27) to model the "posterior odds" by a simple function. Specifically,Cox's logistic discrimination (LGD) rule is then based on the statistic a + 'ßx. This has the advantage that individual densities f.(x) need not be known and we only need to estimate the parameters a and B.Another advantage, which is claimed , is that the …

Carbon nanotubes represent ideal probes for high-resolution structural and chemical imaging of biomolecules with atomic force microscopy. Recent advances in fabrication of carbon nanotube probes with sub-nanometer radii promise to yield unique insights into the structure, dynamics and function of biological macromolecules and complexes.

Atmospheric Compensation For Seawifs Images Of Lake Superior Utilizing Spatial Information, Kirk Knobelspiesse Sep 2000

Atmospheric Compensation For Seawifs Images Of Lake Superior Utilizing Spatial Information, Kirk Knobelspiesse

Theses

Several assumptions are made with the established atmospheric compensation algorithm for images from the SeaWiFS remote sensing platform. One of these assumptions, the existence of Case I (optically clear) ocean water, cannot be made for images of Lake Superior. A modification to the established atmospheric compensation algorithm is presented, where empirical information and external spatial data are utilized to compensate for the atmosphere in all regions of the lake. The established SeaWiFS atmospheric compensation algorithm uses a form of the Dark Object Subtraction (DOS) method. SeaWiFS has two Near-Infrared (NIR) bands used for atmospheric compensation. At these wavelengths, Case I …

An Introduction To Formal Sexuality Education: A Qualitative Study., Kari Lynn Berg Sep 2000

An Introduction To Formal Sexuality Education: A Qualitative Study., Kari Lynn Berg

Theses and Dissertations

This study focused on perceptions of twelve fifth-grade boys and girls during a sexuality education unit in two elementary schools. The purpose of this study was to investigate, through open-ended questions of students and individuals involved with the puberty program planning and implementation, how students and adults accomplished a sexuality education class at the fifth-grade level. The research questions were: (1) How did classroom teachers and students perceive each other over the course of a puberty education unit? (2) What kind of learning environment was created for the puberty education classes? (3) How did the students experience the learning environment? …

Vector Difference Calculus., Brian John Moritz Sep 2000

Vector Difference Calculus., Brian John Moritz

Theses and Dissertations

The analysis of physical problems on complex structures often involves the use of a lattice model of the underlying physical space. The lattice sites provide a convenient basis for the representation of physical quantities. Analogous to the use of differential forms in continuous space, a discrete formalism is developed in which geometrical simplices can be used as a basis for vector as well as scalar quantities. The space of p-forms at a point in the theory of differential forms is replaced by the lattice vertex and the p-dimensional geometrical simplices which contain it. These p-simplices serve as a basis for …

Ice Nanotube: What Does The Unit Cell Look Like?, Kenichiro Koga, Ruben D. Parra, Hideki Tanaka, Xiao Cheng Zeng

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

It is discovered that for an n-gonal ice nanotube built from stacking a single type of n-gonal rings of water, the unit cell consists of two stacked n-gonal rings. In one ring the O–H bonds of water molecules line up clockwise whereas in the other ring the O-H bonds line up counterclockwise. Among the n-gonal ice nanotubes examined, the pentagonal or hexagonal ice nanotube appears to be the most stable.

Water

The town of Yarmouth currently has a $30 million septic sludge treatment plant and transport lines in place. The vast majority of the dwellings and businesses in the Hyannis Park area are on septic systems that are viable and Title 5 compliant, regardless of age. Conventional, "non-failing" septic systems, however, were never intended to remove form their effluent nutrients such as nitrogen. These have become recognized as an environmental threat only as our understanding of the impacts of excess nutrients on ecosystems has increased in recent decades.
