Some Results On Derivation Groups, Murat Alp Jan 2000

Some Results On Derivation Groups, Murat Alp

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper we describe a share package XMOD of functions for computing with finite, permutation crossed modules, their morphisms and derivations; cat$^1$-groups, their morphisms and their sections, written using the GAP \cite{GAP} group theory programming language. We also give some mathematical results for derivations. These results are suggested by the output produced by the XMOD package.

Multipliers Between Orlicz Sequence Spaces, P. B. Djakov, M. S. Ramanuan Jan 2000

Multipliers Between Orlicz Sequence Spaces, P. B. Djakov, M. S. Ramanuan

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Let $M, N $ be Orlicz functions, and let $D(\ell_M , \ell_N ) $ be the space of all diagonal operators (that is multipliers) acting between the Orlicz sequence spaces $\ell_M$ and $\ell_N$. We prove that the space of multipliers $D(\ell_M , \ell_N )$ coincides with (and is isomorphic to) the Orlicz sequence space $ \ell_{M_N^{*}} ,$ where $ M_N^{*} $ is the Orlicz function defined by $M_N^{*}(\lambda ) = \sup \{ N(\lambda x) - M(x), \; x \in (0,1) \}$.

On The Acquisition Of An Indefinite Determiner: Evidence For Unselective Binding, Claire Foley, Barbara Lust, David Battin, Annie Koehne, Katherine White

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

This paper investigates the contrast between quantificational and referential properties of the English indefinite determiner during the course of first language acquisition. · Various syntactic, semantic and pragmatic knowledge related to indefinites has previously been probed in the acquisition literature. (See Brown 1973, Maratsos 1976, Warden 1976, Emslie and Stevenson 1980, Zehler and Brewer 1982, Pine and Martindale 1986, Valian 1986, Gerken, Landau and Remez 1990, Philip 1995, Bohnacker 1997, and Burns and Soja 1997, among others.) However, to date, the contrast between referential-type and quantificational/variable-type interpretations of indefinites has not been extensively studied in first language acquisition. In this …

Family Leave And The Gender Wage Gap, Michael Selmi Jan 2000

Family Leave And The Gender Wage Gap, Michael Selmi

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

In this article, I argue that the key to achieving greater gender equality in the workplace is finding a way to change the behavior of men with respect to the care of children. Until now, most suggestions have focused on changing the behavior of women or employers, but women continue to face significant disadvantages in the workplace despite substantial changes in their labor force behavior. In the first part of the article, I analyze the latest data and conclude that the gender pay gap reflects both women's actual labor market behavior, which still differs from men's, and employers' exaggerated responses …

Adaptive Object-Oriented Filtering Framework For Event Management Applications, Ehab Al-Shaer, Mohamed Fayad, Hussein Abdel-Wahab, Kurt Maly Jan 2000

Adaptive Object-Oriented Filtering Framework For Event Management Applications, Ehab Al-Shaer, Mohamed Fayad, Hussein Abdel-Wahab, Kurt Maly

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Event filtering is an essential element in event management applications. In event management environments, the filtering mechanisms are employed to track the events generated from applications at run-time and perform the corresponding appropriate actions. Several key applications domains, such as system and network management, distributed system toolkits, communication protocols and active databases, utilize event filtering for various management purposes. The goal of this paper is to describe the object-oriented design and implementation of an adaptive event filtering framework which can be integrated and reused efficiently to develop event management applications for various domain environments. In our approach, the event filtering …

A meeting was held in Santa Fe, New Mexico, October 21-22, 1999, to generate discussion and consensus about interoperability of publicly available scholarly information archives. The invitees represented several well known e-print and report archive initiatives, as well as organizations with interests in digital libraries and the transformation of scholarly communication. The central goal of the meeting was to agree on recommendations that would make the creation of end-user services -- such as scientific search engines and linking systems -- for data originating from distributed and dissimilar archives easier. The Universal Preprint Service (UPS) Prototype was developed in preparation for …

Small Combinatorial Cardinal Characteristics And Theorems Of Egorov And Blumberg, Krzysztof Ciesielski Jan 2000

Small Combinatorial Cardinal Characteristics And Theorems Of Egorov And Blumberg, Krzysztof Ciesielski

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

We will show that the following set theoretical assumption

  • \continuum=\omega2, the dominating number d equals to \omega1, and there exists an \omega1-generated Ramsey ultrafilter on \omega

(which is consistent with ZFC) implies that for an arbitrary sequence fn:R-->R of uniformly bounded functions there is a subset P of R of cardinality continuum and an infinite subset W of \omega such that {fn|P: n in W} is a monotone uniformly convergent sequence of uniformly continuous functions. Moreover, if functions fn are measurable or have the …

Judicial Funding And Taxation Mandates: Will Missouri V. Jenkins Survive Under The New Federalism Restraints?, Janice C. Griffith Jan 2000

Judicial Funding And Taxation Mandates: Will Missouri V. Jenkins Survive Under The New Federalism Restraints?, Janice C. Griffith

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

The judiciary frequently mandates costly institutional reforms to correct state and local governmental constitutional violations. This Article examines the unprecedented equitable power exercised by a federal district court in its oversight of a school desegregation remedial plan in Kansas City, Missouri at a cost exceeding $1.8 billion. The district court ordered taxation to ensure funding for the remedial plan and directed local authorities to disregard state law limitations that barred such taxation.

Dean Griffith criticizes the judiciary's disregard of remedial plan costs in devising institutional reforms. She proposes that courts apply a balancing test in the remedial process -- weighing …

Electrophilic Aromatic Nitrosation. Isolation And X-Ray Crystallography Of The Metastable No+ Complex With Nitrosoarene, Sergey V. Lindeman, E. Bosch, Jay K. Kochi Jan 2000

Electrophilic Aromatic Nitrosation. Isolation And X-Ray Crystallography Of The Metastable No+ Complex With Nitrosoarene, Sergey V. Lindeman, E. Bosch, Jay K. Kochi

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Isolation of the unstable 1∶1 complex of 4-nitrosoanisole with NO+PF6− allows its precise X-ray structural characterization. The charge-transfer crystal is formed via strong N⋯N coordination [the distance of 1.938(5) Å corresponding to a σ-bond order of ≈0.2] in the mean plane of the planar 4-nitrosoanisole donor. Thorough analysis of its molecular geometry in terms of valence resonance and MO schemes reveals a strong charge polarization with a local negative charge localized on the nitroso group and a local positive charge distributed over the adjacent p-methoxybenzyl moiety. Such a charge distribution accommodates the well-known passivation of …

The Development Of A Teacher Tolerance For Disagreement Measure, Jason J. Teven Jan 2000

The Development Of A Teacher Tolerance For Disagreement Measure, Jason J. Teven

Iowa Journal of Communication

The field of education has produced a vast amount of research on elements affecting communication in the classroom. Within any learning situation, disagreements about ideas or opinions are inevitable. This paper reports the development of a Teacher Tolerance for Disagreement measure (the TTFD instrument). The paper reviews the evolution of the Tolerance for Disagreement construct and previous efforts with reference to measurement. In this study, a 20-item version of a TTFD instrument was found to be unidimensional, reliable, and able to demonstrate good discriminant validity. Students' perceptions of their teachers' caring was found to be related to their perceptions of …

A Presumption Of Innocence, Not Of Even Odds, Richard D. Friedman

Articles

Now I know how the Munchkins felt. Here I have been, toiling in the fields of Evidenceland for some years, laboring along with others to show how use of Bayesian probability theory can assist in the analysis and understanding of evidentiary problems.' In doing so, we have had to wage continuous battle against the Bayesioskeptics-the wicked witches who deny much value, even heuristic value, for probability theory in evidentiary analysis.2 Occasionally, I have longed for law-and-economics scholars to help work this field, which should be fertile ground for them.3 So imagine my delight when the virtual personification of law and …
