Lds Life Tables: A Comparison Of Long-Lived Populations, Christopher R. Layton

Theses and Dissertations

This research estimates the life expectancy of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) in Utah. We create gender-specific life tables for four groups: total Utah, active LDS, less-active LDS, and non-LDS. Male life tables are based on data from 1991-1995; female life tables are based on data from 1994-1998. Life expectancy at birth is 75 years for all utah males, 79.8 years for active LDS Utah males, 71.6 years for less active LDS Utah males, and 71.5 years for non-LDS Utah males. Female life expectancy at birth is 80.4 years for all Utah females, 83.9 …

Awareness And Attitude Towards Environmental Issues : A Case Study In Section 17, Petaling Jaya, Selangor Darul Ehsan, Peck Leong Tan

Student Works (2000-2009)

The purpose of this study is to understand the level of knowledge and awareness on environmental issues. It also seeks to understand and examine the attitude and participation of the public in dealing with wastes and other environmental issues. It is generally believed that knowledge on environmental issues would increase participation in environmental programmes. However, the traditional measures of high awareness and knowledge are found not to be closely linked with public participation on environmental issues. As in other studies, this study found that some 93 per cent of the respondents know the adverse effects of environmental pollution. However. only …

MIS is a nationwide survey of sample size of 8738 interviews carried out in Peninsular Malaysia adopting stratified 2-stage cluster sampling, a complex sampling design that widely use in most of the general public surveys Taylor Expansion of ratio estimates method is employed in this study to compute the sampling errors. A total of 60 variables concerning ownership of household durable goods, daily consumer products bought in the past I month, media consumption habits, hanking services, leisure activities and literacy rate are analyzed …

Distribution Of Petrogenic Hydrocarbons In Water, Sediment And Cockles (Anadara Granosa) From Kuala Sungai Sepetang And Kuala Sungai Selangor, Mohd Hilmi Jaafar Jan 2000

Distribution Of Petrogenic Hydrocarbons In Water, Sediment And Cockles (Anadara Granosa) From Kuala Sungai Sepetang And Kuala Sungai Selangor, Mohd Hilmi Jaafar

Student Works (2000-2009)

In order to assess the level of oil pollution in the cockle culture areas along the Straits of Malacca, water, sediment and cockle samples were collected from the culture beds of Kuala Sepetang and Kuala Selangor, two of the largest cockle producing areas of Malaysia. The samples were analysed for petrogenic hydrocarbons by employing a spectrofluorometric technique which measures the content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in oil. The content of aliphatic straight chain hydrocarbons were measured by using gas chromatography􀀐mass spectrometry (GCMS) which also allowed for the estimation of carbon preference indices and hence providing a means of estimating …

The Effectiveness Of Malaysian Personal Income Tax Policy (1977-1997), Saidatulakmal Mohd Jan 2000

The Effectiveness Of Malaysian Personal Income Tax Policy (1977-1997), Saidatulakmal Mohd

Student Works (2000-2009)

This research aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the Malaysian Personal Income Tax Policy for the year 1977 - 1997. The areas of concentration are tax burden, poverty level, savings incentives, progressivity index and Inland Revenue Board's objectives. The methodologies to accomplish the mission are regression analysis, mathematical calculation, and index of progressivity. The research concludes that there is no significant relationship to explain any kind of relationship between the tax rates and the poverty level. Another finding shows that Malaysian personal income tax policy seems to be a good policy to induce private savings. Regression analysis, both under the …

Indiana Lane Merge System - Warrants For Use, Andrzej P. Tarko, Shyam Venugopal Jan 2000

Indiana Lane Merge System - Warrants For Use, Andrzej P. Tarko, Shyam Venugopal

JTRP Technical Reports

The entry to a work zone is critical for traffic smoothness and safety because of the discontinuation of one or more lanes. The Indiana Lane Merge System (ILMS) was designed to implement dynamic lane change control at work zone entries by encouraging drivers to switch lanes well upstream of the discontinuous lane taper, thereby reducing the number of aggressive lane changes at the taper. At the time of this research, the ILMS had not been implemented on a large scale at rural freeway work zones. The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) wanted to do a complete safety and capacity evaluation …

A Cross-Case Study Of Teacher Perceptions Of Program Design And Teaching Efficacy: The Seaview Reading Support Program, Susan L. Bowers Smith Edd Jan 2000

A Cross-Case Study Of Teacher Perceptions Of Program Design And Teaching Efficacy: The Seaview Reading Support Program, Susan L. Bowers Smith Edd

Dissertations

Teachers at Seaview Elementary School developed an innovative reading support program delivered by classroom teachers to increase the achievement of children who struggled to read literature in the district's core curriculum. Although studies of the program's impact on student achievement indicated that many of the children who received services in the classroom were able to fluently read grade level materials and improve their scores on standardized tests, issues created by the additional burden of this instruction on some teachers prevented the integration of the program into other grade levels and schools in the Seaview School District and Seaview Elementary School. …

Intrinsic Motivation As A Core To Educational Achievement, Amy E. Carman Jan 2000

Intrinsic Motivation As A Core To Educational Achievement, Amy E. Carman

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Every child has the right to learn, but not every child has the opportunity to learn. It is my belief that the elements suggested in this paper promote intrinsic motivation within the classroom and can give all children an opportunity. By empowering children to enjoy the challenges of academic achievement they will be reaching their highest potential. In this paper I examine five main points: 1. The definition of intrinsic motivation 2. The compatibility of extrinsic rewards and intrinsic reactions in education 3. Teaching methods that induce intrinsic motivation 4. Evaluating core characteristics of those teaching methods 5. Multiculturalism and …

Cyclic Dehn Surgery And The A-Polynomial, Patrick Shanahan Jan 2000

Cyclic Dehn Surgery And The A-Polynomial, Patrick Shanahan

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

We present a necessary condition for Dehn surgery on a knot in double-struck S sign3 to be cyclic which is based on the A-polynomial of the knot. The condition involves a width of the Newton polygon of the A-polynomial, and provides a simple method of computing a list of possible cyclic surgery slopes. The width produces a list of at most three slopes for a hyperbolic knot which contains no closed essential surface in its complement (in agreement with the Cyclic Surgery Theorem). We conclude with an application to cyclic surgeries along non-boundary slopes of hyperbolic mutant knots.

Perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics Predictions For Very High Energy Atmospheric Neutrinos And Muons, Gabriele U. Varieschi Jan 2000

Perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics Predictions For Very High Energy Atmospheric Neutrinos And Muons, Gabriele U. Varieschi

Physics Faculty Works

We compare the leading and next-to-leading order Quantum Chromodynamics predictions for the flux of atmospheric muons and neutrinos from decays of charmed particles. We then compute this flux for different Partonic Distribution Functions (PDF's) and different extrapolations of these at small partonic momentum fraction x. We find that the predicted fluxes vary up to almost two orders of magnitude at the largest energies studied, depending on the chosen extrapolation of the PDF's. We show that the spectral index of the atmospheric leptonic fluxes depends linearly on the slope of the gluon distribution function at very small x. Finally, we analyze …
