An Economic Analysis Of The Use Of Citations In The Law, Richard A. Posner Jan 2000

An Economic Analysis Of The Use Of Citations In The Law, Richard A. Posner

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

This paper examines the use of citations analysis as an empirical tool for understanding aspects of the legal system and for improving the performance of the system. Emphasis is laid on the use of such analysis as a means to evaluate courts and judges (and therefore as judicial-management tool), to test hypotheses about judicial behavior, and to evaluate and improve legal scholarship. It is argued that economic models, particularly of reputation and of human capital, can frame and guide the use of citiations analysis in law.

Simplicity And Complexity In Contracts, Karen Eggleston Jan 2000

Simplicity And Complexity In Contracts, Karen Eggleston

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Standard economic models of contract imply that contracts should be highly "complex," by which we mean (1) rich in the expected number of payoff-relevant contingencies; (2) variable in the magnitude of payoffs contracted to flow between parties; and (3) severe in the cognitive load necessary to understand the contract. Yet most realworld contracts are simple along all three of these dimensions. We argue that many factors, often neglected in the literature, account for this discrepancy. The factors are categorized as asymmetric information, monitoring dynamics, evolutionary pressures, conventions, reliance on trust and reputation, enforcement costs, bounded rationality, and renegotiation. This positive …

Two (Multi) Point Nonlinear Lyapunov Systems Associated With An Nth Order Nonlinear System Of Differential Equations - Existence And Uniqueness, Kanuri N. Murty, Gary W. Howell, G. V.R.L. Sarma

Mathematics and System Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper presents a criterion for the existence and uniqueness of solutions to two and multipoint boundary value problems associated with an nth order nonlinear Lyapunov system. A variation of parameters formula is developed and used as a tool to obtain existence and uniqueness. We discuss solution of the second order problem by the ADI method and develop a fixed point method to find the general solution of the nth order Lyapunov system. The results of Barnett (SIAM J. Appl. Anal. 24(1), 1973) are a particular case.

Series Operation Of Direct Current Xenon Chloride Excimer Sources, Ahmed El-Habachi, Wenhui Shi, Mohamed Moselhy, Robert H. Stark, Karl H. Schoenbach

Bioelectrics Publications

Stable, direct current microhollow cathode discharges in mixtures of hydrochloric acid, hydrogen, xenon, and neon have been generated in a pressure range of 200–1150 Torr. The cathode hole diameter was 250 μm. Sustaining voltages range from 180 to 250 V at current levels of up to 5 mA. The discharges are strong sources of xenon chloride excimer emission at a wavelength of 308 nm. Internal efficiencies of approximately 3% have been reached at a pressure of 1050 Torr. The spectral radiant power at this pressure was measured as 5 mW/nm at 308 nm for a 3 mA discharge. By using …

Electroporation Dynamics In Biological Cells Subjected To Ultrafast Electrical Pulses: A Numerical Simulation Study, R. P. Joshi, K. H. Schoenbach

Bioelectrics Publications

A model analysis of electroporation dynamics in biological cells has been carried out based on the Smoluchowski equation. Results of the cellular response to short, electric pulses are presented, taking account of the growth and resealing dynamics of transient aqueous pores. It is shown that the application of large voltages alone may not be sufficient to cause irreversible breakdown, if the time duration is too short. Failure to cause irreversible damage at small pulse widths could be attributed to the time inadequacy for pores to grow and expand beyond a critical threshold radius. In agreement with earlier studies, it is …

Application Of Wavelets And Principal Component Analysis In Image Query And Mammography, Sol Neeman Ph.D. Jan 2000

Application Of Wavelets And Principal Component Analysis In Image Query And Mammography, Sol Neeman Ph.D.

Engineering Studies Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Breast cancer is currently one of the major causes of death for women in the U.S. Mammography is currently the most effective method for detection of breast cancer and early detection has proven to be an efficient tool to reduce the number of deaths. Mammography is the most demanding of all clinical imaging applications as it requires high contrast, high signal to noise ratio and resolution with minimal x-radiation. According to studies [36], 10% to 30% of women having breast cancer and undergoing mammography, have negative mammograms, i.e. are misdiagnosed. Furthermore, only 20%-40% of the women who undergo biopsy, have …

Effect Of Magnesium And Sulfur Fertilization Of Alfalfa, Kenneth L. Wells, James E. Dollarhide Jan 2000

Effect Of Magnesium And Sulfur Fertilization Of Alfalfa, Kenneth L. Wells, James E. Dollarhide

Soil Science News and Views

In response to concerns that high yields of alfalfa need to be fertilized with sulfur (S) because of soil depletion of S and less S entering the soil from atmospheric fallout, studies were conducted during 1998-1999, to test for S response by alfalfa. Additionally, alfalfa was tested for magnesium (Mg) response because previous hay analysis from the study site had shown very low levels of Mg.

Irrigated Field Crop Acres In Kentucky, Lloyd W. Murdock Jan 2000

Irrigated Field Crop Acres In Kentucky, Lloyd W. Murdock

Soil Science News and Views

Irrigation in Kentucky has always been limited. This is due to a limited water supply in many parts of Kentucky and the high amount of rainfall in the state which reduces the chances for a consistent profitable response to field crops.

Soil Testing For Agronomic And Environmental Uses, William O. Thom, Frank J. Sikora Jan 2000

Soil Testing For Agronomic And Environmental Uses, William O. Thom, Frank J. Sikora

Soil Science News and Views

Soil testing is a program that includes taking samples from a field or site, performing a laboratory analysis, and making recommendations for lime and crop nutrients. Good results from this program depend on several supporting factors: (I) obtaining samples representative of the soil in a field area or site; (2) using good techniques in the laboratory that give accurate indications of the nutrient status of the sampled area; and (3) having an extensive data base for making lime and nutrient recommendations from the analytical results.

Drawdown Of Soil Test Phosphorus And Potassium Levels By Alfalfa, Kenneth L. Wells, James E. Dollarhide Jan 2000

Drawdown Of Soil Test Phosphorus And Potassium Levels By Alfalfa, Kenneth L. Wells, James E. Dollarhide

Soil Science News and Views

Alfalfa hay production removes large amounts of phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) from soils. Because of this, there is always interest in the reduction of soil test phosphorus (STP) and soil test potassium (STK) levels by high-yielding alfalfa. Periodic soil sampling for 2 years during an on-farm· fertilizer study on a high yielding alfalfa field provided an insight into this.
