Estimation Of Base Temperatures For Nine Weed Species, Scott J. Steinmaus, Timothy S. Prather, Jodie S. Holt Feb 2000

Estimation Of Base Temperatures For Nine Weed Species, Scott J. Steinmaus, Timothy S. Prather, Jodie S. Holt

Biological Sciences

Experiments were conducted to test several methods for estimating low temperature thresholds for seed germination. Temperature responses of nine weeds common in annual agroecosystems were assessed in temperature gradient experiments. Species included summer annuals (Amaranthus albus, A. palmeri, Digitaria sanguinalis, Echinochloa crus-galli, Portulaca oleracea, and Setaria glauca), winter annuals (Hirschfeldia incana and Sonchus oleraceus), and Conyza canadensis, which is classified as a summer or winter annual. The temperature below which development ceases (Tbase) was estimated as the x-intercept of four conventional germination rate indices regressed on temperature, by repeated probit analysis, …

Selenium Poisoning Of Wildlife And Western Agriculture: Cause And Effect, N. E. Korte Feb 2000

Selenium Poisoning Of Wildlife And Western Agriculture: Cause And Effect, N. E. Korte

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

This project examined the hypothesis that selenium contamination is not the principal cause of the decline of endemic fish species in the Upper Colorado Basin. Activities employed to test this hypothesis included a reconnaissance of locations altered by recent road construction, a reinterpretation of available literature regarding selenium toxicity, and the interpretation of unpublished data obtained from the Upper Colorado Basin Fish Recovery Program. The project demonstrates that most of the evidence implicating selenium is circumstantial. Specifically, this research demonstrates that neither the historical record nor the technical literature consistently supports the emphasis given selenium toxicity. For example, many locations …

Quantum Calculations On The Vibrational Predissociation Of Nebr2: Evidence For Continuum Resonances, Thomas Alex Stephenson, N. Halberstadt Feb 2000

Quantum Calculations On The Vibrational Predissociation Of Nebr2: Evidence For Continuum Resonances, Thomas Alex Stephenson, N. Halberstadt

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works

Quantum mechanical calculations on the vibrational predissociation dynamics of NeBr2 in the B electronic state have been performed and the results compared with both experimental data and other computational studies. For vibrational levels with v less than or equal to 20 we find that the vibrational state dependence of the predissociation lifetimes is in qualitative agreement with experimental measurements, as are the calculated Br-2 fragment rotational distributions. For higher vibrational levels, the B <-- X excitation profiles are well represented by a sum of two Lorentzian line shapes. We attribute this result to the presence of long-lived resonances in the dissociative continuum that are reminiscent of long-lived dissociative trajectories in previous classical studies of NeBr2. Factorized Representation For Parity-Projected Wigner DJ (Β) Matrices, N.L. Manakov, A.V. Meremianin, Anthony F. Starace Feb 2000

Factorized Representation For Parity-Projected Wigner DJ (Β) Matrices, N.L. Manakov, A.V. Meremianin, Anthony F. Starace

Anthony F. Starace Publications

An alternative representation for the parity-projected Wigner dj(β) rotation matrix is derived as the product of two triangular matrices composed of Gegenbauer polynomials with negative and positive upper indices, respectively. We relate this representation for dj(β) to the one presented by Matveenko [Phys. Rev. A 59, 1034 (1999)], which, in contrast with our result, requires for its evaluation a matrix inversion. In addition, identities for bilinear sums of Gegenbauer polynomials are derived. This work is based on our recently introduced invariant representations for finite rotation matrices [Phys. Rev. A 57, 3233 (1998)].

Protecting And Sharing Western Australia's Coastal Fish Resources. The Path To Integrated Management., Fisheries Western Australia

Fisheries Management Papers

The fisheries management framework of the 21st Century must not only be able to manage the level of exploitation by commercial and recreational fisheries, but also provide an agreed basis and process for changes in the way fish and aquatic resources are used and shared by this community. There is a clear need to counter inevitable pressure on stocks from the impact of a growing population, increasing coastal development and the demands of various key user groups. Unless we are proactive in dealing with the growing exploitation of fisheries along our State’s vast 12,000km coastline, it will be difficult to …

Error Estimations For Indirect Measurements: Randomized Vs. Deterministic Algorithms For "Black-Box" Programs, Vladik Kreinovich, Raul A. Trejo

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many real-life situations, it is very difficult or even impossible to directly measure the quantity y in which we are interested: e.g., we cannot directly measure a distance to a distant galaxy or the amount of oil in a given well. Since we cannot measure such quantities directly, we can measure them indirectly: by first measuring some relating quantities x1,...,xn, and then by using the known relation between xi and y to reconstruct the value of the desired quantity y.

In practice, it is often very important to estimate the error of the resulting indirect measurement. In this paper, …

Separating Touching Objects In Remote Sensing Imagery: The Restricted Growing Concept And Implementations, Leen-Kiat Soh, Costas Tsatsoulis

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

This paper defines the restricted growing concept (RGC) for object separation and provides an algorithmic analysis of its implementations. Our concept decomposes the problem of object separation into two stages. First, separation is achieved by shrinking the objects to their cores while keeping track of their originals as masks. Then the core is grown within the masks obeying the guidelines of a restricted growing algorithm. In this paper, we apply RGC to the remote sensing domain, particularly the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sea ice images.

Using Freewriting To Assess Reading Comprehension, William P. Bintz Feb 2000

Using Freewriting To Assess Reading Comprehension, William P. Bintz

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Building on recent advances in holistic writing assessment, this article reports on an attempt to use freewriting as a tool to assess reading comprehension. It begins by situating this project within several recent efforts to reform reading comprehension assessment. Next, it discusses freewriting as a form of written retelling, a procedure used historically as an alternative form of reading assessment. Then, it presents a taxonomy that illustrates several patterns constructed from using freewriting with proficient readers (graduate students). Finally, implications of this project for thinking differently about reading theory and reading assessment are provided.

Characteristics Of Driven Polymer Surfaces: Growth And Roughness, Grace M. Foo, Ras B. Pandey Feb 2000

Characteristics Of Driven Polymer Surfaces: Growth And Roughness, Grace M. Foo, Ras B. Pandey

Faculty Publications

Using a Monte Carlo simulation, the growth and roughness characteristics of polymer surfaces are studied in 2 + 1 dimensions. Kink-jump and reptation dynamics are used to move polymer chains under a driving field where they deposit onto an impenetrable attractive wall. Effects of field (E) chain length (Lc) and the substrate size (L) on the growing surfaces are studied. In low field, the interface width (W) shows a crossover from one power-law growth in time (W∼tβ1) to another (W∼tβ2 …

Horizontal Structure Of The Upper Ocean Velocity And Density Fields In The Western Equatorial Pacific Warm Pool: Depth Range From 20 To 250 M, Alexander Soloviev, Roger Lukas, Peter Hacker Feb 2000

Horizontal Structure Of The Upper Ocean Velocity And Density Fields In The Western Equatorial Pacific Warm Pool: Depth Range From 20 To 250 M, Alexander Soloviev, Roger Lukas, Peter Hacker

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Wavenumber spectra of velocity and density fields in the western equatorial Pacific warm pool on scales 6–120 km are estimated using the shipboard survey data collected during the TOGA Coupled Ocean–Atmosphere Response Experiment (COARE). The spectra are averaged over three depth intervals: 20–60, 60–110, and 110–250 m (corresponding to the Yoshida jet, the South Equatorial Current, and the southern edge of Equatorial Undercurrent). The velocity spectra are corrected for the mean flow shear advection, which is important under conditions of low gradient Richardson number (Ri). After that, both velocity and density spectra are consistent with an internal wave spectral model …

Cataloging Expert Systems: Optimism And Frustrated Reality, William Olmstadt Feb 2000

Cataloging Expert Systems: Optimism And Frustrated Reality, William Olmstadt

E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)

There is little question that computers have profoundly changed how information professionals work. The process of cataloging and classifying library materials was one of the first activities transformed by information technology. The introduction of the MARC format in the 1960s and the creation of national bibliographic utilities in the 1970s had a lasting impact on cataloging. In the 1980s, the affordability of microcomputers made the computer accessible for cataloging, even to small libraries. This trend toward automating library processes with computers parallels a broader societal interest in the use of computers to organize and store information. Following World War II, …

Effect Of Slow Compression On The Linear Stability Of An Accelerated Shear Layer, John D. Ramshaw Feb 2000

Effect Of Slow Compression On The Linear Stability Of An Accelerated Shear Layer, John D. Ramshaw

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

An analysis is given of the effect of a slow uniform anisotropic compression or expansion on the linear stability of a normally accelerated planar interface between two fluids with different densities and tangential velocities, i.e., a combined Kelvin-Helmholtz and Rayleigh-Taylor instability, but generalized to an arbitrary time-dependent acceleration history. The compression is presumed to be sufficiently slow that the density remains uniform within each fluid and hence depends only on time. The perturbation is taken to be sinusoidal with amplitude h(t). The time evolution of h is determined by requiring pressure continuity across the interface in the usual way. The …

Applications Of Fuzzy Logic To Software Model, Yahaya Yuhanim Hani Feb 2000

Applications Of Fuzzy Logic To Software Model, Yahaya Yuhanim Hani

Student Works (2000-2009)

This thesis investigates the use of fuzzy logic approach in software metrics application. Software metrics defines a standard way of measuring the properties of software products, development processes and resources. The most common application of software metrics is the software cost estimation where it predicts the effort required for completing certain stages of a software development life cycle. The ability to obtain an accurate effort prediction is essential for the cost estimation process, as it helps a project manager to specify the efforts needed for project development. In relation to this, cost estimation models such as COCOMO (Constructive Cost Model), …

No set of issues has tended to separate economists and ecologists, especially in the mind of the public, more than those surrounding the linkages between economic growth, human carrying capacity, and the environment. The general lack of interest among the majority of economists in problems of the environment and a parallel lack of interest among the majority of ecologists in economic issues, combined with a lack of dialogue between the two groups, has allowed extreme positions to take hold in the public debate and to influence policy to an inordinate degree.

Lifetime Effects On The Dissociation Of Core-Excited N2 And Co Molecules, N. Saito, A. Hempelmann, F. Heiserq, Oliver Hemmers, K. Wieliczek, J. Viefhaus, U. Becker Feb 2000

Lifetime Effects On The Dissociation Of Core-Excited N2 And Co Molecules, N. Saito, A. Hempelmann, F. Heiserq, Oliver Hemmers, K. Wieliczek, J. Viefhaus, U. Becker

Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

Vibrational-resolved ion and ion-pair yield spectra of N2 and CO taken at their 1s⃗π* resonance excitations reveal decay-channel-dependent core hole lifetimes. The linewidths of the yield spectra tend to be shortened when the number of electrons ejected in the deexcitation process increases, finally becoming narrower than the total ion yield or absorption natural lifetime width of the core-excited states of N2 and CO, respectively. In contrast to this, the linewidths of the yield spectra for the singly charged molecular ions, N2+ and CO+, are shown to be broader than their corresponding natural linewidths. …

Degradation Of N-Hexadecane And Its Metabolites By Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Under Microaerobic And Anaerobic Denitrifying Conditions, Chawala Chayabutra, Lu-Kwang Ju

Chemical, Biomolecular, and Corrosion Engineering Faculty Research

A strategy for sequential hydrocarbon bioremediation is proposed. The initial O-2-requiring transformation is effected by aerobic resting cells, thus avoiding a high oxygen demand. The oxygenated metabolites can then be degraded even under anaerobic conditions when supplemented with a highly water-soluble alternative electron acceptor, such as nitrate. To develop the new strategy, some phenomena were studied by examining Pseudomonas aeruginosa fermentation. The effects of dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration on n-hexadecane biodegradation were investigated first. Under microaerobic conditions, the denitrification rate decreased as the DO concentration decreased, implying that the O-2-requiring reactions were rate limiting. The effects of different nitrate and …
