Diversity In Reasoning And Rationality: Metacognitive And Developmental Considerations, David Moshman Feb 2000

Diversity In Reasoning And Rationality: Metacognitive And Developmental Considerations, David Moshman

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

Tasks in the adult reasoning literature are designed so that heuristic processing leads one astray and adequate rule-based processing requires explicit knowledge about applicable logical and quasi-logical norms. Other research, however, indicates that appropriate rule-based inferences can be automatic. Individual differences in rationality are largely due to differences in developmental progress toward metacognitive understanding of both heuristic and rule-based inferences.

Pion-Induced Transport Of Π Mesons In Nuclei, S. G. Mashnik, R. J. Peterson, A. J. Sierk, Michael R. Braunstein Feb 2000

Pion-Induced Transport Of Π Mesons In Nuclei, S. G. Mashnik, R. J. Peterson, A. J. Sierk, Michael R. Braunstein

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

A large body of data for pion-induced neutral pion continuum spectra spanning outgoing energies near 180 MeV shows no dip there that might be ascribed to internal strong absorption processes involving the formation of Δ’s. This is the same observation previously made for the charged pion continuum spectra. Calculations in an intranuclear cascade model or a cascade exciton model with free-space parameters predict such a dip for both neutral and charged pions. We explore several medium modifications to the interactions of pions with internal nucleons that are able to reproduce the data for nuclei from 7Li through Bi.

Search For Color Singlet Technicolor Particles In Pp̅ Collisions At √S = 1.8 Tev, T. Affolder, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration Feb 2000

Search For Color Singlet Technicolor Particles In Pp̅ Collisions At √S = 1.8 Tev, T. Affolder, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We search for color singlet technirho and technipion production in pp̅ collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. These exotic technimesons are present in a model of walking technicolor. The signatures studied are lepton plus two jets plus E/T and multijet final states. No excess of events is seen in either final state. We set an upper limit on the technirho production cross section and exclude a region in the technipion mass versus technirho mass plane.

Exact Analytic Relation Between Quantum Defects And Scattering Phases With Applications To Green’S Functions In Quantum Defect Theory, V. E. Chernov, N. L. Manakov, Anthony F. Starace Feb 2000

Exact Analytic Relation Between Quantum Defects And Scattering Phases With Applications To Green’S Functions In Quantum Defect Theory, V. E. Chernov, N. L. Manakov, Anthony F. Starace

Anthony F. Starace Publications

The relation between the quantum defects, μλ, and scattering phases, δλ, in the single-channel Quantum Defect Theory (QDT) is discussed with an emphasis on their analyticity properties for both integer and noninteger values of the orbital angular momentum parameter λ. To derive an accurate relation between μλ and δλ for asymptotically-Coulomb potentials, the QDT is formally developed for the Whittaker equation in its general form “perturbed” by an additional short-range potential. The derived relations demonstrate that μλ is a complex function for above-threshold energies, which is analogous to the fact that δ …

Infofilter: Supporting Quality Of Service For Fresh Information Delivery, Ling Liu, Calton Pu, Karsten Schwan, Jonathan Walpole

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

With the explosive growth of the Internet and World Wide Web comes a dramatic increase in the number of users that compete for the shared resources of distributed system environments. Most implementations of application servers and distributed search software do not distinguish among requests to different web pages. This has the implication that the behavior of application servers is quite unpredictable. Applications that require timely delivery of fresh information consequently suffer the most in such competitive environments. This paper presents a model of quality of service (QoS) and the design of a QoS-enabled information delivery system that implements such a …

The Wooster Voice (Wooster, Oh), 2000-02-03, Wooster Voice Editors Feb 2000

The Wooster Voice (Wooster, Oh), 2000-02-03, Wooster Voice Editors

The Voice: 1991-2000

This edition of the Wooster Voice focuses on a lawsuit that was taken against the college and students attending the college. On January 13, 2000, a former Kappa Chi pledge, Chris Babis, filed a civil suit against the College of Wooster, the Head Baseball Coach Tim Pettorini, the Kappa Chi fraternity, and 26 former members of Kappa Chi. Twelve of the 26 former members who were named, remained at Wooster during the lawsuit. Babis, through the lawsuit, asked for for $50,000 from each of the 31 defendants. This civil suit stemmed from incidents that occurred on January 20, 1999, when …
