Detection Of Rare Events And Rule Extracition By Neural Networks And Decision Trees, Wooyoung Choe, Okan K. Ersoy

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Sample stratification is a technique for making each class in a sample have equal influence on decision making. For classification with neural netwobrks, it is often preferable to use a stratified sample including an equal number of examples from each class;. However, it is not always possible to have a stratified sarrlple because of unavailability of examples (referred to as rare event cases). For rare event detection, we develop two sample stratification schemes in this research. The first scheme stratifies a sample by adding up the weighted sum of the derivatives during the backward pass of training. The second scheme …

Opening The Doors Of Communication And Guiding Parents Into Classrooms And Schools, Katy Anne Forsyth

Honors Theses

"A good parent is a national treasure and we need to make parents and families partners with their children's teacher and principals in the process of education," (Beyond the Classroom 308). This quote is the heart behind the contents of this book. For the love and concern that we as teachers have for the children in our lives, we owe it to them to help make their educational experience the most well rounded prosperous experience possible. To accomplish this, a partnership needs to be created by opening the doors of communication and guiding parents into classrooms and schools. As teachers, …

Future Leadership, Old Issues, New Methods, Douglas V. Johnson Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

Each year, the Army After Next Seminar students are asked to orient their Strategy Research Papers on topics appropriate to the programs 30-years in the future focus. Thirty years ago, the United States Army was deeply involved in Vietnam and in the Cold War. Officers could reasonably expect to serve repetitive tours in Southeast Asia interspersed with tours along either the Korean Demilitarized Zone or the Inter-German Border. The tension between sometimes guerrilla, sometimes major warfare in the Pacific and the prospects of nuclear war in Europe made any prognostications of a future like that which we currently enjoy an …

A Guideline To Clinical Utility Of Prostate Specific Antigen, Walid A. Farhat, Aida A. Habbal, Raja B. Khauli

Saudi Medical Journal

Prostate cancer has emerged as the most common tumor effecting adult men. In the USA, 300,000 cases each year, and some 40,000 deaths per year are expected from this disease. Once prostate cancer gets to an advanced stage, one cannot prevent its progression and cure is no longer possible. Thus, to effect the course of prostate cancer and to diminish the death rate from this disease, it should be detected at its early stages. The prostate specific antigen serum test is the best tumor marker present but it is certainly not perfect. The proper utility of prostate specific antigen testing, …

It has been a decade since Computer Ethics came into prominence within the field of computer science and engineering, changing not only the profession but the classroom as well. The commercialization and globalization of the World Wide Web has impacted us all, both producers and consumers alike. What was once the province of the few has become the virtual society of the multitudes. Ethical issues concerning security, privacy, information, identity, community and equity of access once contained and localized, have assumed additional complexity in the global environment. Every day, the front pages of our newspapers and magazines report violations of …

Design, Synthesis, And Evaluation Of A Novel Serine Protease Inhibitor Based On Monocyclic Β-Lactams, Ian M. Paquette Mar 2000

Design, Synthesis, And Evaluation Of A Novel Serine Protease Inhibitor Based On Monocyclic Β-Lactams, Ian M. Paquette

All Theses And Dissertations

Serine proteases are a large family of proteolytic enzymes which utilize a serine residue as a reactive nucleophile in the active site. Some of the more common serine proteases are chymotrypsin, trypsin, thrombin, human leukocyte elastase (HLE), human cathepsin G, and human cytomegalovirus protease (HCMV protease). Unregulated serine protease activity has been implicated in several common ailments, including rheumatoid arthritis, emphysema, pancreatitis, atherosclerosis, cystic fibrosis, and Alzheimer’s disease. Since serine proteases are responsible for the onset of such a wide range of diseases, there is an equivalent need for a large library of synthetic serine protease inhibitors to selectively counteract …

A Comparative Discussion Of The Notion Of 'Validity' In Qualitative And Quantitative Research, Glyn Winter Mar 2000

A Comparative Discussion Of The Notion Of 'Validity' In Qualitative And Quantitative Research, Glyn Winter

The Qualitative Report

The issues surrounding the use and nature of the term 'validity' in qualitative research are controversial and many. In this paper, the author attempts to establish that 'validity' is not a single, fixed or universal concept, but rather a contingent construct, inescapably grounded in the processes and intentions of particular research methodologies and projects. The first section of this work deals with the problems faced in defining 'validity' in both quantitative and qualitative research methods and will briefly review other authors' attempts to categorise it. The work will then proceed to distinguish and compare the claims to 'validity' made by …

Modeling The Growth Dynamics Of Antarctic Krill Euphausia Superba, Eileen E. Hofmann, Cathy M. Lascara

CCPO Publications

A time-dependent, size-structured, bioenergetically based model was developed to examine the growth dynamics of Antarctic krill Euphausia superba 2 to 60 mm in size. The metabolic processes included in the model are ingestion, a baseline respiration, respiratory losses due to feeding and digestion, and an activity-based respiration factor. The total of these processes, net production, was used as the basis for determining the growth or shrinkage of individuals. Size-dependent parameterizations for the metabolic processes were constructed from field and laboratory measurements. Environmental effects were included through time series of pelagic phytoplankton concentration that were derived from data sets collected west …

Conceptual Problems With Remote Element Synthesis, Oliver Manuel Mar 2000

Conceptual Problems With Remote Element Synthesis, Oliver Manuel

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The notion of remote element synthesis has recently been modified to explain the presence of nucleogenetic isotopic anomalies and decay products of short-lived nuclides by injection of a small amount of exotic nucleogenetic material. Even with this modification, remote element synthesis seems inconsistent with the following observations: Evidence of coupled variations in the chemical and isotopic compositions of the source material for meteorites. Residual coupling of chemical and isotopic heterogeneities across planetary distances in the solar system today. The mass-fractionation relationship seen across isotopes of elements in the planetary system, in the solar wind, and in solar flares. Linkage of …

A High Energy X-Ray And Neutron Scattering Study Of Iron Phosphate Glasses Containing Uranium, Mevlüt Karabulut, G. K. Marasinghe, C. S. Ray, Y. S. Badyal, M.-L. Saboungi, S. Shastri, D. Haeffner, George Daniel Waddill, D. E. Day

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The atomic structure of iron phosphate glasses containing uranium has been studied by complementary neutron and x-ray scattering techniques. by combining x-ray and neutron structure factors, detailed information about different pair interactions has been obtained. Most of the basic structural features such as coordination numbers and O-O and P-O distances in uranium containing glasses are the same as those in the base glass of batch composition 40Fe2O3-60P2O5 (mol %). However, the Fe-O distances change slightly with the addition of uranium. The observed structural parameters support a structural model in which the waste elements occupy voids in the Fe-O-P network, hence, …

Photoelectron Diffraction Determination Of The Structure Of Ultrathin Vanadium Films On Cu(001), George Daniel Waddill, D. P. Moore, Osman Ozturk Mar 2000

Photoelectron Diffraction Determination Of The Structure Of Ultrathin Vanadium Films On Cu(001), George Daniel Waddill, D. P. Moore, Osman Ozturk

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

X-ray photoelectron diffraction (XPD) and low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) have been used to study the structural properties of V thin films on Cu(001). For room-temperature growth, submonolayer coverages result in (1x1) LEED patterns that evolve to exhibit very diffuse (2x1) structure at approximately 1 monolayer coverage. We do not observe any V forward-focusing enhancements for V films that exhibit either the (1x1) or (2x1) structure, suggesting that these structures are limited to the first 1-2 vanadium layers. At coverages above 1 monolayer, the V films display complex LEED patterns characteristic of four bcc(110) domains. This structure persists to V coverages …

Testing Of The New Usgs K Index Algorithm At Bear Lake Observatory, Ariel O. Acebal Mar 2000

Testing Of The New Usgs K Index Algorithm At Bear Lake Observatory, Ariel O. Acebal

Theses and Dissertations

The K index was developed by Bartels in 1939 as an estimate of the level of geomagnetic activity caused by the Sun. This index was computed manually every three hours at geomagnetic observatories using the magnetic traces of the surface planetary magnetic field. In 1991, the International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy approved four additional methods to compute the K index; all of them were computer algorithms. One of the approved methods, the Wilson code, recently underwent some modifications. The new algorithm is now part of a Windows-based computer program being developed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). After …

The Evaluation Of Competing Classifiers, Stephen G. Alsing Mar 2000

The Evaluation Of Competing Classifiers, Stephen G. Alsing

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation research makes contributions towards the objective evaluation of competing classifiers, i.e., classification systems (CSs) or pattern recognition algorithms. Automatic CSs have been under development for almost 40 years in a wide range of military and medical applications. During this period, scientists and engineers have developed extensive theory and algorithms for classification, but by comparison have focused little on the testing and evaluation of their systems. Classifier evaluation is very important in the fields of automatic target recognition (ATR) and pilot workload classification. In order for military operators to be confident in new CSs, they must have an objective …
