Hydrologic Variation In The Northern Great Plains During The Last Two Millennia, Sherilyn C. Fritz, Emi Ito, Zicheng Yu, Kathleen R. Laird, Daniel R. Engstrom

Reconstructions of lake-water salinity at decadal resolution for the last 2,000 years are compared among three lakes in North Dakota to infer regional patterns of drought. The intersite comparisons are used to distinguish local variation in climate or hydrology from regional patterns of change. At one lake, diatom-inferred salinity and lake-water Mg/Ca inferred from ostracode shell chemistry are coherent, both in terms of direction and magnitude of change, indicating that each is a robust technique for reconstructing lake-water chemistry. The data show that the last 2,000 years have been characterized by frequent shifts between high and low salinity, suggesting shifts …

The investigation of the dynamics of quantum many-body systems is a concerted effort involving computational studies of mathematical models and experimental studies of material samples. Some commonalities of the two tracks of investiga- tion are discussed in the context of the quantum spin dynamics of low-dimensional magnetic systems, in particular spin chains. The study of quantum fluctuations in such systems at equilibrium amounts to exploring the spectrum of collective exci- tations and the rate at which they are excited from the ground state by dynamical variables of interest. Production Of ϒ(1s) Mesons From ΧB Decays In Pp̅ Collisions At √S = 1.8 Tev, T. Affolder, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

We have reconstructed the radiative decays χ _b(1P) → Υ (1S) γ and χ_b(2P) → Υ (1S) γ in pp̅ collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV, and measured the fraction of Υ(1S) mesons that originate from these decays. For Υ(1S) mesons with p_T^Y > 8.0 GeV/c, the fractions that come from χ _b(1P) and χ_b(2P) decays are [27.1 ± 6.9(stat) ± 4.4(syst)]% and [10.5 ± 4.4(stat) ± 1.4(syst)]%, respectively. We have derived the fraction of directly produced Υ(1S) mesons to be [50.9 ± 8.2(stat) ± 9.0(syst)]%.
