3d Outside Cell Interference Factor For An Air-Ground Cdma ‘Cellular’ System, David W. Matolak May 2000

3d Outside Cell Interference Factor For An Air-Ground Cdma ‘Cellular’ System, David W. Matolak

Faculty Publications

We compute the outside-cell interference factor of a code-division multiple-access (CDMA) system for a three-dimensional (3-D) air-to-ground (AG) "cellular-like" network consisting of a set of uniformly distributed ground base stations and airborne mobile users. The CDMA capacity is roughly inversely proportional to the outside-cell interference factor. It is shown that for the nearly free-space propagation environment of these systems, the outside-cell interference factor can be larger than that for terrestrial propagation models (as expected) and depends approximately logarithmically upon both the cell height and cell radius.

Mode Vertices And Mode Graphs., Jobriath Scott Kauffman May 2000

Mode Vertices And Mode Graphs., Jobriath Scott Kauffman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The eccentricity of a vertex, v, of a connected graph, G, is the distance to a furthest vertex from v. A mode vertex of a connected graph, G, is a vertex whose eccentricity occurs as often in the eccentricity sequence of G as the eccentricity of any other vertex. The mode of a graph, G, is the subgraph induced by the mode vertices of G. A mode graph is a connected graph for which each vertex is a mode vertex. Note that mode graphs are a generalization of self-centered graphs. This paper presents some …

Activation Volumes In Thin Film And Particulate Systems, Roger D. Kirby, Mingjun Yu, David J. Sellmyer May 2000

Activation Volumes In Thin Film And Particulate Systems, Roger D. Kirby, Mingjun Yu, David J. Sellmyer

Roger Kirby Publications

We consider magnetization reversal and decay in thin film and particulate magnetic systems where thermally activated processes are important. We present measurements on the activation volumes associated with magnetization reversal in CoCrPt thin films. We find that the measured activation volume V* goes through a minimum as the film thickness is decreased from 17.5 to 5.5 nm. We have modeled this behavior qualitatively by assuming that the energy barrier to thermally activated reversal varies as 1/H, as has been predicted for incoherent nucleation processes and thermally activated domain–wall motion. This model also predicts that V* varies …

Ion-Kill Dosimetry, Robert Katz, F. A. Cucinotta, M. Fromm, A. Chambaudet May 2000

Ion-Kill Dosimetry, Robert Katz, F. A. Cucinotta, M. Fromm, A. Chambaudet

Robert Katz Publications

Unanticipated late effects in neutron and heavy ion therapy, not attributable to overdose, imply a qualitative difference between low and high LET therapy. We identify that difference as ‘ion kill’, associated with the spectrum of z/β in the radiation field, whose measurement we label ‘ion-kill dosimetry’.

Charge-Transfer Bonding In Metal–Arene Coordination, S. M. Hubig, Sergey V. Lindeman, Jay K. Kochi May 2000

Charge-Transfer Bonding In Metal–Arene Coordination, S. M. Hubig, Sergey V. Lindeman, Jay K. Kochi

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

X-ray crystallographic structures of donor–acceptor complexes of aromatic hydrocarbons with transition metals are re-examined with the focus on the arene ligands. Thus, significant structural and electronic changes are revealed in the arene moiety due to coordination to the metal center including: (i) expansion of the aromatic six-carbon ring; (ii) endocyclic π-bond localization; (iii) distortion of the planarity (folding) of the arene ring; and (iv) shortening of the metal-arene bond distances. All structural features are characteristic of metal–arene (π- or σ-) complexes that exhibit various degrees of (metal-to-ligand) charge transfer. The concept of charge-transfer bonding not only explains the structural details …

Altered T Cell-Mediated Immunity And Infectious Factors In Autism, Yong Hu May 2000

Altered T Cell-Mediated Immunity And Infectious Factors In Autism, Yong Hu

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Three major questions were addressed in this dissertation: 1) Do immune abnormalities associated with autism primarily alter CD4+ T cell-mediated or humoral immune responses? 2) Are specific T cell clones expanded in autism? 3) Which, if any, infectious agents play a role in autism?

CD4+ T cell-mediated (Th1) or humoral (Th2) immune responses can be distinguished on the basis of the cytokines expressed. CD4+ T-cells secrete interleukin type 2 (IL-2) and interferon-γ, whereas a Th2 response is associated with secretion of interleukin type 4(IL-4). mRNA extracted from peripheral blood mononuclear nuclear cells (PBMC) showed significantly increased levels of IL-2 and …

Holocene Tephrostratigraphy, Southern Kenai Peninsula, Lower Cook Inlet, Alaska, Kathleen J. Lemke

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This thesis describes the results of a study of 33 tephra layers found within two peat sections near Anchor Point and Homer, Alaska, on the lower Kenai Peninsula. Numerous lower Cook Inlet volcanoes have been active through the Holocene. Tephra layers found at these two sites provide a partial record of their eruptive activity. The hazards that accompany this activity have increased as populations and commercial activities expand and air traffic over the region increases. The tephras analyzed for this study provide an initial geochemical database for the lower Cook Inlet volcanoes. The database is available in electronic format at …

Debris-Flow Activity In Canyon Of Lodore, Colorado: Implications For Debris-Fan Formation And Evolution, Jennifer A. Martin May 2000

Debris-Flow Activity In Canyon Of Lodore, Colorado: Implications For Debris-Fan Formation And Evolution, Jennifer A. Martin

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Large-scale characteristics of Ladore Canyon debris fans are dependent upon the bedrock and lithology of the mainstem and tributary canyons. The largest fans occur in the widest section of the mainstem canyon, which typically correlates with the location of large faults. The steepest fans are found at the mouths of tributaries where cliffs are formed by resistant lithologies. Smaller-scale fan characteristics are dependent upon the magnitude and frequency of events from the respective drainage basin, which is controlled primarily by climate. Three distinct deposit ages (oldest, intermediate, youngest) were distinguished on individual fans and were tentatively correlated throughout the canyon …

Responses Of Sphagnum And Carex Peatlands To Ultraviolet-B Radiation, And A Meta-Analysis Of Uv-B Effects On Vascular Plants, Peter S. Searles May 2000

Responses Of Sphagnum And Carex Peatlands To Ultraviolet-B Radiation, And A Meta-Analysis Of Uv-B Effects On Vascular Plants, Peter S. Searles

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The severity of stratospheric ozone depletion in the temperate and polar latitudes has raised concerns about the sensitivity of terrestrial vegetation and ecosystems to solar ultraviolet (UV-B) radiation. This dissertation examined the responses of plants and microbes to solar UV-B for 3 years in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina (55° S). This region is under the influence of the Antarctic "ozone hole" during the austral spring. Additionally, a quantitative review of the UV-B literature was conducted using a set of statistical techniques known as meta-analysis.

For the field studies in Tierra del Fuego, plots were established in a Sphagnum moss peatland …

Late Quaternary Glacier Fluctuations And Vegetation Change In The Northwestern Ahklun Mountains, Southwestern Alaska, Yarrow L. Axford May 2000

Late Quaternary Glacier Fluctuations And Vegetation Change In The Northwestern Ahklun Mountains, Southwestern Alaska, Yarrow L. Axford

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This research examines moraine and lacustrine records of glacier fluctuations, in combination with palynological records of vegetation change, from the previously unstudied northwestern Ahklun Mountains in southwestern Alaska.

Moraine mapping reveals that ice-cap outlet glaciers in the study area extended ca. 60 km from the center of the Ahklun Mountians ice dome during the early Wisconsin (sensu lato), and ca. 40 km during the late Wisconsin. Correlations with well-studied moraines in the southern Ahklun Mountains indicate an asymmetry of glaciation over the range, with ice-cap outlet glaciers more extensive to the south. This asymmetry was more striking during …

Riparian Zone Protection: The Use Of The Willingness-To-Accept Format In A Contingent Valuation Study, Catherine A. Broadhead

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The contingent valuation method (CVM) is used to evaluate the minimum compensation landowners require to forego production on farm riverbanks areas. The elicitation format used in the survey is a yes-no participation question followed by an open-ended question.

Chapter 2 presents the results of the survey. The Heckman approach is used in the econometric analysis to take care of the self-selection problem arising with this formatting of the questions. Chapter 3 is devoted to further examining the potential for undertaking valuation exercises using the willingness-to-accept format (WTA)

WTA estimates obtained with open-ended format are compared to WTA estimates obtained when …

A Case Study Of The Undergraduate Biomedical Research Component Of A Federally Funded Minority Student Development Program, Nancy A. Drickey

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Tremendous growth in the biomedical science workforce has increased the need for trained scientists. The current workforce is severely underrepresented by minority groups, particularly Native Americans. To address this issue, the federal government funded programs that encouraged Native American students to participate in undergraduate biomedical science courses and research. One such program, funded by the National Institutes of Health, is the Minority Student Development Program at Northern Arizona University. Little research has been done on educational programs for minority populations.

The purpose of this study was to identify and describe qualities and characteristics of the undergraduate research component of the …

Returns To Public Agricultural Expenditure Under Uncertainty, Sanjeev Misra May 2000

Returns To Public Agricultural Expenditure Under Uncertainty, Sanjeev Misra

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A vast literature has investigated the returns to investment in agriculture research and generally found extremely high rates of return. These results suggest policymakers would do well to maintain or increase resource allocation to public agricultural research. Remarkably little attention has been paid, however, to the issue of how best to allocate public agricultural research funding between competing research areas and organizations. This paper considers the relative returns to alternative uses of public agricultural research funds committed to the agricultural experiment stations of 10 western states of the United States over the years 1967-91. A model of expected utility maximization …

Evaluation Of Bispectral Spectrophotometry For Accurate Colorimetry Of Printing Materials, Sergio Gonzalez May 2000

Evaluation Of Bispectral Spectrophotometry For Accurate Colorimetry Of Printing Materials, Sergio Gonzalez

Theses

During recent years the need for accurate color measurements has been increasing. One of the most wide spread techniques to measure color is based on spectrophotometric measurements. However, when dealing with hardcopy materials (paper and inks) that contain fluorescent components, the color measurements become questionable. Conventional spectrophotometers measure total radiance factors of fluorescent materials for the light source within the instrument. Such measurements cannot be used to obtain accurate colorimetry for other illuminants or sources. On the other hand using bispectral methods, which measure reflected and fluorescent spectral radiance factors as a function of incident wavelength, produces illuminant independent data …

The Botetourt Dragoons In War And Peace, Michael G. Henkle

Honors Theses

This thesis studies a Confederate cavalry company from the immediate prewar years through the war, ending with the death of one of its last members. Most soldiers were residents of Botetourt County, Virginia. The study focuses upon both the men themselves and the battles in which they fought. Letters, diaries, and postwar accounts reveal their thoughts. After the war, many took an active role in both veterans' affairs and their community by joining veteran camps and participating in politics. Near the end, many received pensions or stayed in old soldiers' homes.

Lead Exposure And Physiological Enzymes Among Industrial Versus Non-Industrial Workers In Al-Ain, United Arab Emirates., Fatima Rashid Mattar Said Al-Neamy May 2000

Lead Exposure And Physiological Enzymes Among Industrial Versus Non-Industrial Workers In Al-Ain, United Arab Emirates., Fatima Rashid Mattar Said Al-Neamy

Theses

Lead, which is considered to be as a toxic metal without any useful physiological or biochemical function in human body was widely used since the evolution of the industrialized era as a chemical part of much machinery and commodities. Lead containing gasoline, lead paints, lead-soldered cans, lead-glazed earthenware and tobacco are examples of sources of lead. Therefore, lead continues to be a significant public health concern globally.

Nowadays it is particularly impossible to find a person with blood lead level lower than 0.48μmol/L (100 μg/ dL) especially in city areas. Changes in neurobehavioral, cardiovascular, hematological, and renal functions are found …

Rotational Structure Of Extremely Floppy Van Der Waals Complexes: Adiabatic Separation Of Angular And Radial Motion, P. Daniel Ward May 2000

Rotational Structure Of Extremely Floppy Van Der Waals Complexes: Adiabatic Separation Of Angular And Radial Motion, P. Daniel Ward

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The adiabatic or Born-Oppenheimer approximation is often used in molecular calculations to simplify the solution to the Schrödinger equation. The basis of the approximation is the large difference in the relative motions of the nuclei and electrons in the molecule—the electrons are able to respond almost instantly to the movements of the nuclei. Thus, the nuclei may be regarded as being fixed in a certain position and the Schrödinger equation can then be solved using the potential obtained by solving the electronic problem at fixed nuclear configuration.

A similar argument can be used to decouple the angular and radial motions …

Mean-Square Error Bounds And Perfect Sampling For Conditional Coding, Xiangchen Cui May 2000

Mean-Square Error Bounds And Perfect Sampling For Conditional Coding, Xiangchen Cui

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In this dissertation, new theoretical results are obtained for bounding convergence and mean-square error in conditional coding. Further new statistical methods for the practical application of conditional coding are developed.

Criteria for the uniform convergence are first examined. Conditional coding Markov chains are aperiodic, π-irreducible, and Harris recurrent. By applying the general theories of uniform ergodicity of Markov chains on general state space, one can conclude that conditional coding Markov chains are uniformly ergodic and further, theoretical convergence rates based on Doeblin's condition can be found.

Conditional coding Markov chains can be also viewed as having finite state space. …

Comparing Nonlinear And Nonparametric Modeling Techniques For Mapping And Stratification In Forest Inventories Of The Interior Western Usa, Gretchen Gengenbach Moisen May 2000

Comparing Nonlinear And Nonparametric Modeling Techniques For Mapping And Stratification In Forest Inventories Of The Interior Western Usa, Gretchen Gengenbach Moisen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Recent emphasis has been placed on merging regional forest inventory data with satellite-based information both to improve the efficiency of estimates of population totals, and to produce regional maps of forest variables. There are numerous ways in which forest class and structure variables may be modeled as functions of remotely sensed variables, yet surprisingly little work has been directed at surveying modem statistical techniques to determine which tools are best suited to the tasks given multiple objectives and logistical constraints. Here, a series of analyses to compare nonlinear and nonparametric modeling techniques for mapping a variety of forest variables, and …

Positive Solutions Obtained As Local Minima Via Symmetries, For Nonlinear Elliptic Equations, Florin Catrina May 2000

Positive Solutions Obtained As Local Minima Via Symmetries, For Nonlinear Elliptic Equations, Florin Catrina

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In this dissertation, we establish existence and multiplicity of positive solutions for semilinear elliptic equations with subcritical and critical nonlinearities. We treat problems invariant under subgroups of the orthogonal group. Roughly speaking, we prove that if enough "mass " is concentrated around special orbits, then among the functions with prescribed symmetry, there is a solution for the original problem.

Our results can be regarded as a further development of the work of Z.-Q. Wang, where existence of local minima in the space of symmetric functions was studied for the Schrödinger equation. We illustrate the general theory with three examples, all …

Theoretical Studies Of Penetration Of Magnetospheric Electric Fields To The Ionosphere, Stanislav Sazykin May 2000

Theoretical Studies Of Penetration Of Magnetospheric Electric Fields To The Ionosphere, Stanislav Sazykin

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Ionospheric disturbance electric fields of magnetospheric origin play an important role in determining the global morphology and dynamics of the ionosphere of the Earth. In this work, we present a number of numerical simulations of the transient electric fields in the middle and inner magnetosphere and the ionosphere equatorward of the auroral zone caused by idealized changes in the magnetospheric driving parameters. For these studies, we use the Rice Convection Model (RCM), a large computer code of the magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling which consistently computes the electric fields, currents, and plasma densities in the magnetosphere and the electric field and currents in …
