Casting Light On Cultural Property, John J. Costonis May 2000

Casting Light On Cultural Property, John J. Costonis

Michigan Law Review

Theorists of private property invite comparison to theorists of light. For centuries, the latter have debated whether light is best understood as a wave or as a photon. The rivalry has been intense because each hypothesis explains some characteristics of light very well, but others very poorly. Wave theory outstrips photon theory in explaining such phenomena as light's frequencies and diffraction patterns. But photon theory, which reduces light to a succession of particles, more effectively explains such subatomic phenomena as changes in an atom's orbital shell produced by the interaction of photons and electrons. Property theorists too can be viewed …

Virtual Auditing Agents: The Edgar Agent Challenge, Kay M. Nelson, Alex Kogan, Rajendra P. Srivastava, Miklos Vasarhelyi, Hai Lu May 2000

Virtual Auditing Agents: The Edgar Agent Challenge, Kay M. Nelson, Alex Kogan, Rajendra P. Srivastava, Miklos Vasarhelyi, Hai Lu

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

Intelligent agents can be used as agents of organizational change. This potential exists in the domain of accounting audit, where much of what is currently done manually in batch mode could be done continuously and on-line. We discuss the use of intelligent Internet agents as a way of changing and expanding audit practices in the virtual world. A quality/service framework is presented that suggests ways that accounting firms can evolve in this era of on-line opportunities. The EDGAR Agent is presented as an example of an intelligent Internet agent that gathers financial information. The challenges involved in the development of …

Surveys were mailed to 300 faculty at associate and baccalaureate degree schools of nursing. The survey focused on faculty members' degree of ease or difficulty in providing accommodations, their perceptions of the adequacy of institutional support, and their own beliefs and understanding of the accommodation process. Analysis of the 109 returned surveys suggest the majority of faculty understood the need for accommodations. The majority of respondents stated they received adequate support from their respective institutions and were able to provide the …

Atmospheric Organochlorine Pesticides In The Western Canadian Arctic: Evidence Of Transpacific Transport, R. Bailey, L. A. Barrie, C. J. Halsall, P. Fellin, D. C. G. Muir May 2000

Atmospheric Organochlorine Pesticides In The Western Canadian Arctic: Evidence Of Transpacific Transport, R. Bailey, L. A. Barrie, C. J. Halsall, P. Fellin, D. C. G. Muir

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Concentrations of hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs), chlordane, and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) were measured in ambient air samples on a weekly basis between December 1992 and January 1995 at Tagish Yukon, Canada. In winter, unusually high air concentrations of HCHs, DDT, and chlordanes at Tagish were predominantly influenced by transpacific long-range atmospheric transport from eastern Asia that generally occurred within 5 days. HCH and heptachlor epoxide concentrations were correlated with the time that air spent over eastern Asia prior to arrival at Tagish. Chlordane and DDT, which also increase with transpacific transport, do not show a correlation with the time the upwind airshed included …

Money And Theology -- It's Not An Oxymoron, Valerie Kay Brown May 2000

Money And Theology -- It's Not An Oxymoron, Valerie Kay Brown

Student Scholarship

The premise of this research is that the lack of connecting church financial management principles to a biblical foundation is a primary cause for the lack of clergy and church leaders following effective financial management practices within a church setting. This research explored this hypothesis by teaching two church financial courses; one with heavy emphasis on the biblical foundation for financial and administrative management, and one that is secular in approach. This study will compare the experiences of teaching each course with the premise that the scripturally-based course will have a positive impact on the students' attitude toward church financial …

Phytoremediation Of A Pyrene-Contaminated Cecil Soil With Annual Ryegrass (Lolium Multiflorum Lam.), Teddy Luc Lalande May 2000

Phytoremediation Of A Pyrene-Contaminated Cecil Soil With Annual Ryegrass (Lolium Multiflorum Lam.), Teddy Luc Lalande

All Theses

Phytoremediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is inconsistent and the microbial mechanisms involved are unclear. We evaluated the effect of annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) and P availability on the degradation of pyrene (600mg kg-1 dry soil) in the top 7.5-cm of a Cecil sandy loam (fine, kaolinitic, thermic Typic Kanhapludults) over a 10-month experiment under field conditions in Clemson, SC. Changes associated with the soil microbial community were also evaluated. Plastic canopies were installed to prevent leaching and raindrop dispersion of pyrene. Treatment factors were pyrene, vegetation, and available P levels in a complete factorial experiment with four replications. …

Simple Model For Mixing At Accelerated Fluid Interfaces With Shear And Compression, John D. Ramshaw May 2000

Simple Model For Mixing At Accelerated Fluid Interfaces With Shear And Compression, John D. Ramshaw

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

A simple model was recently described for predicting linear and nonlinear mixing at an unstable planar interface between two fluids of different density subjected to an arbitrary time-dependent variable acceleration history [J. D. Ramshaw, Phys. Rev. E 58, 5834 (1998)]. Here we generalize this model to include the Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) instability resulting from a tangential velocity discontinuity delta u, as well as the effects of a uniform anisotropic compression or expansion of the mixing layer as a whole. The model consists of a second-order nonlinear ordinary differential equation of motion for the half-width h of the mixing layer. This equation …

Global Optimization: Techniques And Applications, Nathan Cahill May 2000

Global Optimization: Techniques And Applications, Nathan Cahill

Theses

Optimization problems arise in a wide variety of scientific disciplines. In many practical problems, a global optimum is desired, yet the objective function has multiple local optima. A number of techniques aimed at solving the global optimization problem have emerged in the last 30 years of research. This thesis first reviews techniques for local optimization and then discusses many of the stochastic and deterministic methods for global optimization that are in use today. Finally, this thesis shows how to apply global optimization techniques to two practical problems: the image segmentation problem (from imaging science) and the 3-D registration problem (from …

The process developed began with pentachloropyridine which on reaction with potassium fluoride in …

Anomalous Shape Recognition Using Computer Vision, Chang-Sik Kim May 2000

Anomalous Shape Recognition Using Computer Vision, Chang-Sik Kim

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In this research, a new method for anomalous shape recognition, named Curvature-Angular Descriptor (CAD), was written. The CAD generates shape feature vectors from a given curve shape. These vectors can be used to uniquely characterize the shape.

The sweet potato has one of the most irregular shapes of any fruit or vegetable. The Standards for Grades of sweet potato shapes (The Code of Federal Regulation, title 7 Agriculture, 1995) are very subjective. For this reason, the sweet potato was chosen as an anomalous shape for evaluating the CAD. The CAD was applied using two methods for sweet potato shape recognition. …

Visual Test Using Color Frequency Doubling, Scott Whittenburg May 2000

Visual Test Using Color Frequency Doubling, Scott Whittenburg

Chemistry Faculty Publications

A novel psychophysical visual test is proposed for testing a person for glaucoma, and based on the discovery that a frequency doubling phenomenon is produced by isoluminent color visual stimuli. More specifically, it is proposed to construct a visual stimulus for which alternating colors in a grating pattern is the only basis for producing the frequency doubling phenomenon. That is, the colors are of the same luminance or intensity level, i.e., isoluminent, but each grating or pattern alternates from one color to another. Preferably, the colors are complementary color pairs, such as blue and yellow.

An Examination Of Gasoline Pollutants From Two-Cycle Marine Engines Within Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Brian Carter May 2000

An Examination Of Gasoline Pollutants From Two-Cycle Marine Engines Within Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Brian Carter

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Jet skis are a very popular "toy" to have in the United States. They account for almost a third of all boat sales, and their numbers are growing rapidly. Unfortunately jet skis use two-cycle engines that pollute at unacceptable levels. Jet ski motors can emit up to 25% of its fuel right back into the water. This alarmed me and I wanted to take a deeper look into how bad jet skis pollute Las Vegas' primary water source. Lake Mead. I looked into how a two-cycle engine differs from a regular engine and I looked at the actual pollutants a …

Remote Sensing And Geographic Information Systems For Decision Analysis In Public Resource Administration: Case Study In A Southwestern Watershed, William G. Kepner May 2000

Remote Sensing And Geographic Information Systems For Decision Analysis In Public Resource Administration: Case Study In A Southwestern Watershed, William G. Kepner

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Alternative futures analysis is a scenario-based approach to regional land planning that attempts to synthesize existing scientific information in a format useful to community decision makers. Typically, this approach attempts to investigate the impacts of several alternative sets of choices preferred by representative stakeholder groups relative to selected environmental or economical endpoints. Potential impacts from each of the scenarios are compared to current conditions of the region in terms of a set of processes that are modeled within a geographic information system. Future conditions are generally examined from the perspective of a recent baseline condition (versus empirically determined using a …

Reconstruction Of Convex Bodies In The Plane From Three Non-Collinear Point Source Directed X-Rays, Michael Lauzon May 2000

Reconstruction Of Convex Bodies In The Plane From Three Non-Collinear Point Source Directed X-Rays, Michael Lauzon

HMC Senior Theses

When one takes an x-ray, one learns how much material is along the line between the x-ray source and the x-ray sensor. The goal of tomography is to learn what one can about an object, by knowing how much material is on a collection of lines or rays passing through that object. Mathematically, this is a collection of line integrals of density function of the object. In this paper, we provide and prove reconstructions for a class of convex objects of uniform density using x-rays from three point sources.

The Stephens and Sommer survey instrument was modified to fit the educational setting. The assistant principal sample was selected from public high schools from the states of Illinois, Iowa, and Nebraska.

Pooled And Individual Bycatch Quotas: Exploring Tradeoffs Between Observer Coverage Levels, Bycatch Frequency, Pool Size, And The Precision Of Bycatch Estimates, Landon S. Jensen May 2000

Pooled And Individual Bycatch Quotas: Exploring Tradeoffs Between Observer Coverage Levels, Bycatch Frequency, Pool Size, And The Precision Of Bycatch Estimates, Landon S. Jensen

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The North Pacific Ocean is highly productive, hosting many of the world's largest groundfish populations and supporting a thriving fishing industry. Numerous regulations have been implemented to control the incidental take of non-target bycatch. Individual and Pooled Bycatch Quotas have recently been proposed as instruments that could further encourage the avoidance of such bycatch and increase enforceability of bycatch caps at less-than-entire-fishery levels of operation. The recent advent of fishing cooperatives such as the Pacific Whiting Conservation Cooperative and the Pollock Conservation Cooperatives create an additional impetus for examining the characteristics of pool and vessel specific bycatch quotas.

We have …
