Traffic Scheduling And Link Sharing Mechanisms For Controlled Load Service, Yun Choong Chin Jul 2000

Traffic Scheduling And Link Sharing Mechanisms For Controlled Load Service, Yun Choong Chin

Student Works (2000-2009)

The project studies and develops a simulator based on the link-sharing and traffic scheduling mechanism for Controlled Load service. The simulation adopts some of the features of the Class Based Queueing. The main factors that determine whether a packet scheduling algorithm is able to support integrated services or differentiated services on Internet is the ability to provide bandwidth guarantee. It is important to provide guarantee for minimum bandwidth when there are enough demands to ensure competing data flows do· not degrade each others' performance. The objective of this project is to observe the performance of the link-sharing and traffic scheduling …

Neutral Beam Stopping And Emission In Fusion Plasmas. I: Deuterium Beams, H. Anderson, M. G. Von Hellermann, R. Hoekstra, L. D. Horton, A. C. Howman, R. W.T. Konig, R. Martin, Ronald E. Olson, H. P. Summers

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The charge transfer reaction of neutral deuterium beams with impurities enables one of the principle quantitative diagnostic measurements of the hot core fusion plasma; that is, charge exchange spectroscopy. The complementary measurement of beam emission spectroscopy has been fruitful in motional Stark wavelength shift and fluctuation studies, but less so in using absolute measured intensities. In the last two years we have achieved substantial improvement in the quantitative analysis and agreement between the observed and modelled beam emission at the JET Joint Undertaking. This has depended on improved spectral fitting of the overlayed Dα motional Stark multiplet, self-consistent beam emission …

FOCUS on Boise State

There s no exact formula for creativity. We funnel together inspiration, perseverance, experience, emotions and serendipity -and sometimes we manage to distill the unwieldy mix into something new and wonderful. In this issue of FOCUS, we explore the creative spirit and how it manifests itself in our increasingly complex and busy world, where technology links us more closely than ever and time is often the most precious commodity of all. Transfer Pricing In The Decentralized Multinational Corporation, Peter C. Dawson, Stephen M. Miller Jul 2000

Transfer Pricing In The Decentralized Multinational Corporation, Peter C. Dawson, Stephen M. Miller

Economics Working Papers

This paper considers how the multinational corporation's transfer price responds to changes in international corporate effective tax rates. It extends the decentralized decision-making analysis of transfer pricing in the context of different tax rates. It adopts and extends Bond's (1980) model of the decentralized multinational corporation that assumes centralized transfer pricing. The direction of transfer price change is as expected, while the magnitude of change is likely to be less than predicted by the Horst (1971), centralized decision-making model. The paper extends the model further by assuming negotiated transfer pricing, where the analysis is partitioned into perfect and imperfect information …

Perceived Image Contrast And Observer Preference, Anthony Calabria Jul 2000

Perceived Image Contrast And Observer Preference, Anthony Calabria

Theses

A large-scale investigation into the perception of contrast in color images was performed. Experiments were performed to determine the influence of image lightness, chroma, and sharpness transforms on perceived image contrast and observer preference. The influence of lightness, chroma, and sharpness manipulations was investigated separately by independent soft-copy, paired-comparison tests of contrast perception and image preference. The perception of contrast between images of different transforms and different subject matter was also investigated as was the perception of image contrast relative to the most preferred image manipulation. In all, five experiments of contrast perception and four experiments of image preference were …

A Comparative Analysis Of Japanese And U.S. Teaching Styles Of Mathematics, Timothy Michael Wurdock

Mathematics Graduate Theses

This study examines the effects of different international teaching styles on the performance of junior high school students. Japanese students ranked higher than U.S. students on international tests. The whole-class method and open-ended problems are techniques frequently used in Japanese classrooms. These techniques will be incorporated into the author’s curriculum to determine their effectiveness in teaching mathematics. Two eighth grade classes will be studied. The author will teach the experimental group using the whole-class method. The control group will be taught using the American method.

Gamma-Ray Bursts Have Millisecond Variability, Katharine C. Walker, Bradley E. Schaefer, E. E. Fenimore Jul 2000

Gamma-Ray Bursts Have Millisecond Variability, Katharine C. Walker, Bradley E. Schaefer, E. E. Fenimore

Faculty Publications

We have performed searches for isolated flares and for steady flickering in the initial ∼ 1 s of gamma-ray burst light curves on the microsecond to millisecond timescales. Two bursts among our sample of 20 revealed four isolated flares with timescales from 256 to 2048 μs. A wavelet analysis for our sample showed low-level flickering for all bursts on timescales from 256 μs to 33 ms, with the majority of bursts containing rise times faster than 4 ms and 30% having rise times faster than 1 ms. These results show that millisecond variability is common in classical bursts and not …

Surfaces, Tree-Width, Clique-Minors, And Partitions, Guoli Ding, Bogdan Oporowski, Daniel P. Sanders, Dirk Vertigan

Faculty Publications

In 1971, Chartrand, Geller, and Hedetniemi conjectured that the edge set of a planar graph may be partitioned into two subsets, each of which induces an outerplanar graph. Some partial results towards this conjecture are presented. One such result, in which a planar graph may be thus edge partitioned into two series-parallel graphs, has nice generalizations for graphs embedded onto an arbitrary surface and graphs with no large clique-minor. Several open questions are raised. © 2000 Academic Press.

Gfrp Reinforced Concrete Bridge Decks (Kyspr 96-169), David Deitz, Issam E. Harik, Hans Gesund

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

This report investigates the application of glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) rebars in concrete bridge decks as a potential replacement or supplement to conventional steel rebars. Tests were conducted to determine the material properties of the GFRP reinforcement, and experiments were performed to study aspects of GFRP rebar placement in actual bridge decks. These included observation of GFRP rebar handling characteristics and worker response during construction. Load tests of full-scale reinforced concrete specimens were conducted to evaluate the characteristics of three reinforcing schemes: (1) an epoxy coated steel (ECS) reinforcing scheme; (2) a GFRP reinforcing scheme, and (3) a Hybrid …

Thawing Out The Cold Record: Some Thoughts On How Videotaped Records May Affect Traditional Standards Of Deference On Direct And Collateral Review, Robert C. Owen, Melissa Mather

The Journal of Appellate Practice and Process

Appellate courts are unable to “smell the smoke of battle” from a trial. For this reason, a trial court’s decision is owed deference when examining an appeal. Video technology makes this reason for deference less relevant.

Elizabeth River Reports

Executive Summary

A study of the macrobenthic communities of the Elizabeth River watershed was conducted in summer 1999. The three objectives of the Benthic Biological Monitoring Program of the Elizabeth River watershed are: (1) To characterize the health of regional areas of the tidal waters of the Elizabeth River watershed Chesapeake Bay as indicated by the structure of the benthic communities. These characterizations are based upon application of benthic restoration goals and the Benthic Index of Biotic Integrity (BIBI) developed for the Chesapeake Bay to five primary strata - the Mainstem of the river, the Lafayette River, the Southern Branch, …

Search For The Charged Higgs Boson In The Decays Of Top Quark Pairs In The EΤ And Μτ Channels At √S =1.8 Tev, T. Affolder, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

Top quark production offers the unique opportunity to search for a charged Higgs boson (H±), as the contribution from t→H+b→ τ + νb can be large in extensions of the standard model. We use results from a search for top quark pair production by the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) in the e τ +ET+jets and μ τ+ET+jets signatures to set an upper limit on the branching ratio of Ɓ (t→H+b) in 106 pb-1 of data. The upper …

Cryptanalysis Of The M-Permutation Protection Schemes, Hongjun Wu, Feng Bao, Dingfeng Ye, Robert H. Deng Jul 2000

Cryptanalysis Of The M-Permutation Protection Schemes, Hongjun Wu, Feng Bao, Dingfeng Ye, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Anderson and Kuhn have proposed the EEPROM modification attack to recover the secret key stored in the EEPROM. At ACISP ’98, Fung and Gray proposed an m-permutation protection scheme against the EEPROM modification attack. At ACISP ’99, Fung and Gray pointed out that in their original scheme, a secret key with too small or too large Hamming weight could be recovered easily. Then they proposed a revised m- permutation protection scheme and claimed that their revised scheme does not leak any information of the secret key. In this paper, we break completely both the original and the revised …

Direct Measurement Of Oscillations Between Degenerate Two-Electron Bound-State Configurations In A Rapidly Autoionizing System, Heider N. Ereifej, J. Greg Story Jul 2000

Direct Measurement Of Oscillations Between Degenerate Two-Electron Bound-State Configurations In A Rapidly Autoionizing System, Heider N. Ereifej, J. Greg Story

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper we report a direct observation of the oscillation between bound-state configurations in a rapidly autoionizing system. Calcium atoms were excited to a pure 4p3/2nd two-electron configuration using a 500-fsec laser pulse. The initial 4p3/2nd doubly excited state is energy degenerate with the 4p1/2n'd states and several continuum channels. Because of the short-pulse excitation, the initial state of the atom is not an energy eigenstate, but a nonstationary wave packet. As a result, oscillations between the two bound configurations were produced. These oscillations were measured by scanning the timing of a second …

Development In The Petroleum Sub-Sector And Their Impacts On Nigerian Economy., I. P. Ojinnaka

Bullion

The development of the petroleum industry has had both negative and positive impacts on the Nigerian economy. Two schools of thought can be examined. First, that positive impacts outweigh the negative, and secondly, the inverse. The paper will examined the impacts and analyzed the positive ones. From the approach of the study it is clear that the petroleum industry has had both negative and positive impacts on the Nigerian economy. Nigeria without petroleum could be like any other country without oil or gas, that is, import dependent. However, Nigeria with oil is the best thing that could have happened to …

Vennerstrom, Yuxiang Dong, Walter Reed Army Institute Of Research, Arba L. Ager Jr., Hong-Ning Fu, Sheri M. Walters, James K. Wood, Geoffrey Edwards, Alexandra D. Holme, W. Graham Mclean

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Sixteen alkyl-substituted dispiro-1,2,4,5-tetraoxanes (7,8,15,16-tetraoxadispiro[5.2.5.2]hexadecanes) were synthesized to explore dispiro-1,2,4,5-tetraoxane SAR and to identify tetraoxanes with better oral antimalarial activity than prototype tetraoxane 1 (WR 148999). The tetraoxanes were prepared either by peroxidation of the corresponding cyclohexanone derivatives in H2-SO4/CH3CN or by ozonolysis of the corresponding cyclohexanone methyl oximes. Those tetraoxanes with alkyl substituents at the 1 and 10 positions were formed as single stereoisomers, whereas the five tetraoxanes formed without the stereochemical control provided by alkyl groups at the 1 and 10 positions were isolated as mixtures of diastereomers. Three of the sixteen …

Mathematical Devices For Getting A Fair Share: Whether The Problem Involves An Estate, A Cake Or An Opportunity For Regency, Solutions Now Exist For Obtaining An Equitable Division, Theodore P. Hill

Research Scholars in Residence

Since the dawn of history (and certainly before) people have bickered, even battled, over the fair distribution of resources -- for example, the division of estates, disputed territories and the spoils of war. Such dilemmas have for the most part been resolved unilaterally by kings (Solomon and the baby), judges or simple force. Few truly logical solutions evolved. In the past 50 years, however, a number of mathematical devices have been discovered that offer elegant, practical and often surprisingly simple resolutions to many problems of fair-division.
