Assessment And Preparation Of Career And Technical Education Teachers: Implications For Curriculum Development, Victor K.A. Gbomita Aug 2000

Assessment And Preparation Of Career And Technical Education Teachers: Implications For Curriculum Development, Victor K.A. Gbomita

International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA) Conference

The study was designed to determine the preparedness of a cohort of career and technical teachers to meet the requirements of the contemporary classroom. Using the field-based, competency-based alternative teacher education model operated by Temple University, it was determined that Temple University's career and technical education teachers felt well prepared to meet the challenges of the contemporary classroom. It was also evident that there were both similarities and differences in how teachers in academic disciplines and teachers in career and technical fields perceived their readiness to teach the next generation of students. Indicators in the study further suggest that there …

Mining Labour Market Information For Use In Developing An It Manpower Predictive Model, Gar-Yun Garry Suen

International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA) Conference

To improve the information content of the data and to empower knowledge workers of today and tomorrow, the latest “hot” technologies that have emerged on the client/server arena are focused on filtering unnecessary data and presenting the valuable information in a user-friendly, intuitive, and easy to understand way. One of these technologies is data mining. This paper will highlight the significant of discovering meaningful new correlations, patterns, and trends by digging into (mining) large amounts of labour market information (LMI) stored in databases, using artificial-intelligence (AI) and statistical and mathematical techniques. For experimental purpose, a manpower predictive model will be …

Search For Antiproton Decay At The Fermilab Antiproton Accumulator, S. Geer, J. Marriner, M. Martins, R. E. Ray, J. Streets, W. Wester

Gregory Snow Publications

A search for antiproton decay has been made at the Fermilab Antiproton Accumulator. Limits are placed on 13 antiproton decay modes. The results include the first explicit experimental limits on the muonic decay modes of the antiproton, and the first limits on the decay modes ℯ-γγ and ℯ-ω. The most stringent limit is for the decay modep̅→ ℯ-γ. At 90% C.L. we find that τ p̅¯ / B ( p̅→ ℯ-γ)>7x105 yr. The most stringent limit for decay modes with a muon in the final state …

A Factor Analysis Of Caucasian College Students' Perceptions Of Native American Women., Stephanie Larocque Aug 2000

A Factor Analysis Of Caucasian College Students' Perceptions Of Native American Women., Stephanie Larocque

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined Caucasian college students' perceptions of Native American women. The impetus of this study was the paucity of data pertaining to perceptions of Native American women. A trait scale derived from a modified Katz/Braly (1933) scale from LaRocque (1995) was presented to 478 Caucasian undergraduate college students at the University of North Dakota. The intent of this study was to scrutinize more closely this population's perceptions of Native American women via factor analytic techniques, and also to examine if participants perceptions of Native American women would differ significantly from their perceptions of women in general. The results indicated …

A Lattice Path Integral For Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics, Simon Catterall, Eric B. Gregory Aug 2000

A Lattice Path Integral For Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics, Simon Catterall, Eric B. Gregory

Physics - All Scholarship

We report on a study of the supersymmetric anharmonic oscillator computed using a euclidean lattice path integral. Our numerical work utilizes a Fourier accelerated hybrid Monte Carlo scheme to sample the path integral. Using this we are able to measure massgaps and check Ward identities to a precision of better than one percent. We work with a non-standard lattice action which we show has an {\it exact} supersymmetry for arbitrary lattice spacing in the limit of zero interaction coupling. For the interacting model we show that supersymmetry is restored in the continuum limit without fine tuning. This is contrasted with …

An Approximation To Miscible Fluid Flows In Porous Media With Point Sources And Sinks By An Eulerian-Lagrangian Localized Adjoint Method And Mixed Finite Element Methods, Hong Wang, Liang Dong, Richard E. Ewing, Stephen L. Lyons, Guan Qin Aug 2000

Lyons, Guan Qin

Faculty Publications

We develop an Eulerian–Lagrangian localized adjoint method (ELLAM)-mixed finite element method (MFEM) solution technique for accurate numerical simulation of coupled systems of partial differential equations (PDEs), which describe complex fluid flow processes in porous media. An ELLAM, which was shown previously to outperform many widely used methods in the context of linear convection-diffusion PDEs, is presented to solve the transport equation for concentration. Since accurate fluid velocities are crucial in numerical simulations, an MFEM is used to solve the pressure equation for the pressure and Darcy velocity. This minimizes the numerical difficulties occurring in standard methods for approximating velocities caused …

Magnetic Localization In Transition-Metal Nanowires, Ralph Skomski, H. Zeng, M. Zheng, David J. Sellmyer Aug 2000

Magnetic Localization In Transition-Metal Nanowires, Ralph Skomski, H. Zeng, M. Zheng, David J. Sellmyer

David Sellmyer Publications

Magnetization reversal in transition-metal nanowires is investigated. Model calculations explain why magnetization reversal is localized, as opposed to the sometimes assumed delocalized coherent-rotation and curling modes. The localization is a quite general phenomenon caused by morphological inhomogenities and occurring in both polycrystalline and single-crystalline wires. In the polycrystalline limit, the competition between interatomic exchange and anisotropy gives rise to a variety of random-anisotropy effects, whereas nearly single-crystalline wires exhibit a weak localization of the nucleation mode. Model predictions are used to explain the coercive and magnetic-viscosity behavior of Co (and Ni) nanowires electrodeposited in self-assembled alumina pores.

Dot Gain Variation (A Study Of The Effects Of Dot Gain Variation To Improve Digital Workflow For The Xeikon Dcp/32d Digital Printing System), Voraphot Vacheravothan

Theses

Xeikon is a digital printing system that sends digital files directly to the press, thus eliminating film and plate processing. Technically, Xeikon is a web-fed press using electrophotographic technology to create information that is trans ferred to the substrate. From a marketing perspective, it is one of the preferred choices for on-demand, variable-data, and short-run printing because it has been proven to be an economical process than traditional offset. In the current printing process, the digital file is prepared as a postscript file and transferred to the Xeikon server and Xeikon Raster Image Processor (RIP) respectively. The computer section at …

An Interactive, Graphical Typeface Identification System, Charles Iii Myers Aug 2000

An Interactive, Graphical Typeface Identification System, Charles Iii Myers

Theses

Most, if not all, published type identification books suffer from serious drawbacks which make them difficult to use by both typographic novices and professionals. Few effective computerized programs exist to simplify the identification of typefaces. The purpose of this project is to create an effective, visually attractive, interactive and easy-to-use model of a type identification system, which, if successful, will be fully developed. This is accomplished by combining the graphics and interactivity of the World Wide Web with the database management capabilities of modern database products. The user is given a series of "questions" regarding readily observable structural characteristics of …

An Investigation Into The Effect Of The Compression Algorithm In The Presence Of Shifting And Cropping On Image Quality, Ornsiri Thonggoom Aug 2000

An Investigation Into The Effect Of The Compression Algorithm In The Presence Of Shifting And Cropping On Image Quality, Ornsiri Thonggoom

Theses

Image compression is a form of data compression frequently used in digital imaging applications to improve the efficiency of transmission and storage. In order to have a manageable file size, the data compression is lossy, i.e. image information is lost. Lossy compression algorithms such as Baseline JPEG use the insensitivity of the human eye to high frequency information as a basis for the compression. Discrete cosine transforms (DCT) are performed on the data followed by variable quantization. And the image blocking has no exact regulations for the spatial variation. Using this technique, information is lost and the decompressed image is …

Spectroscopy And Photometry Of Nearby Young Solar Analogs, Eric J. Gaidos, Gregory W. Henry, Stephen M. Henry Aug 2000

Spectroscopy And Photometry Of Nearby Young Solar Analogs, Eric J. Gaidos, Gregory W. Henry, Stephen M. Henry

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We present new photometry and spectroscopy of 34 stars from a catalog of 38 nearby (d < 25 pc) G and K dwarfs selected as analogs to the early Sun. We report that the least active star in our sample is also slowly rotating and probably of solar age. Two other stars appear to be evolved objects that have recently acquired angular momentum. A fourth star may be a spectroscopic binary. Many of the other stars belong to previously identified common proper-motion groups. Space motions, lithium abundances, and Ca II emission of these stars suggest ages between 70 and 800 Myr.

Molecular-Dynamics Study Of Phase Transitions In Alkali Thiocyanates, M. M. Ossowski, John R. Hardy, Robert W. Smith Aug 2000

Molecular-Dynamics Study Of Phase Transitions In Alkali Thiocyanates, M. M. Ossowski, John R. Hardy, Robert W. Smith

Physics Faculty Publications

An account is presented of our studies of the order-disorder phase transitions in KSCN, RbSCN, and CsSCN. These are based on parameter-free interionic potentials based on the Gordon-Kim modified electron gas formalism extended to molecular ions. We performed static structural relaxations and supercell molecular dynamics and predicted with reasonable accuracy the temperatures for the onset of the transitions. In particular, we address the question of how the SCN2 ions disorder to yield subsequent structural transformations. We found high-temperature phases of average Fm3¯m symmetry for both KSCN and RbSCN. We argue that in reality the full appearance of these phases is …

Subject Choice By Students In Year 12 In Australian Secondary Schools, Sue Fullarton, John Ainley

LSAY Research Reports

Choices that are in the subjects studied in senior secondary school influence differences in access to higher education, vocational education and training, and to labour market outcomes. Previous studies have shown that students from higher socioeconomic backgrounds, those from private schools, high early school achievers and students from non-English speaking backgrounds are more likely to participate in the courses that are avenues to higher education and the professions. Students from disadvantaged backgrounds tend to participate in courses that lead to vocational education and training or more often to entry into the labour market without any further formal education or training. …

Economics Of Using On-Farm Reservoirs To Distribute Diverted Surface Water To Depleted Ground Water Areas Of The Southern Mississippi Valley Region, Eric J. Wailes, Kenneth B. Young, James Smartt, Gail L. Cramer

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

Rapid ground water depletion has become a significant problem for parts of the Southern Mississippi River Valley. In 1997, the Arkansas Soil and Water Conservation Commission (ASWCC) declared six counties in the Grand Prairie of Arkansas critical ground water areas. A proposed solution to the ground water depletion problem in this region is to divert surplus flows from the White River by a canal system to the farmer stakeholders. To make the system work, on-farm reservoirs will be needed to store and manage the diverted surface water for crop irrigation use during the growing season.
