Refining American Strategy In Africa, Steven Metz Dr.
Refining American Strategy In Africa, Steven Metz Dr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
The author provides a broad overview of the African security environment as a basis for recommendations on the refinement of American strategy in that region. He assesses both the opportunities for positive change which exist today, and the obstacles. While only Africans themselves can determine the future of their region, an American strategy which discourages proxy aggression, encourages private initiatives in the economic and political spheres, and uses the U.S. military, particularly the Army, to engage its African counterparts could pay great dividends. American defense strategy calls for using the military to help shape the global security environment, preempting and …
The Physiologic Development Of Speech Motor Control: Lip And Jaw Coordination, Jordan R. Green, Christopher A. Moore, Masahiko Higashikawa, Roger W. Steeve
The Physiologic Development Of Speech Motor Control: Lip And Jaw Coordination, Jordan R. Green, Christopher A. Moore, Masahiko Higashikawa, Roger W. Steeve
Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications
This investigation was designed to describe the development of lip and jaw coordination during speech and to evaluate the potential influence of speech motor development on phonologic development. Productions of syllables containing bilabial consonants were observed from speakers in four age groups (i.e., 1-year-olds, 2-year-olds, 6-year-olds, and young adults). A video-based movement tracking system was used to transduce movement of the upper lip, lower lip, and jaw. The coordinative organization of these articulatory gestures was shown to change dramatically during the first several years of life and to continue to undergo refinement past age 6. The present results are consistent …

On The Assessment Of Stability And Patterning Of Speech Movements, Anne Smith, Michael T. Johnson, Clare Mcgillem, Lisa Goffman
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Speech requires the control of complex movements of orofacial structures to produce dynamic variations in the vocal tract transfer function. The nature of the underlying motor control processes has traditionally been investigated by employing measures of articulatory movements, including movement amplitude, velocity, and duration, at selected points in time. An alternative approach, first used in the study of limb motion, is to examine the entire movement trajectory over time. A new approach to speech movement trajectory analysis was introduced in earlier work from this laboratory. In this method, trajectories from multiple movement sequences are time- and amplitude-normalized, and the STI …

A Cross-Cultural Content Analysis Of Television News: Weslaco And Abilene, Texas And Matamoros, Mexico, Biada Pena
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
This study is a cross-cultural research project involving two small Texas television markets and a third in Matamoros, Mexico. The study compares, through a research content analysis of video-taped TV newscasts, differences and similarities between three markets.
These three markets were selected because of their geographical and cultural characteristics to determine whether geographic proximity or cultural proximity is an indication of similarities.
The study concluded that the Matamoros TV newscasts concentrated more heavily on politics and the economy rather than on crime. The Weslaco newscasts aired the highest numbers of crime related stories while the newscasts in Abilene focused more …

Development And Testing Of A Simulated Closed Loop Drug Delivery System For Chf Patients Under Milrinone Administration, Runa Shah
Theses
The purpose of this thesis project is the development and testing of a simulated closed loop drug delivery (CLDD) system that consists of a pharmacokinetic, physiological, and feedback-controlling model. The focus of this study is on the control of milrinone inflision to maintain cardiac output at desired setpoint range for patients suffering from congestive heart failure (CHF). The simulated CLDD system is written in VisSim dynamic simulation language for an IBM-compatible PC.
Milrinone pharmacokinetics are represented by a three compartment model. The physiological model consists of the cardiovascular system model linked to the pharmacodynamic submodel of milrinone. The feedback-controlling model …
Translating Cyberculture : An Analysis Of American And Brazilian Cultural Differences Evidenced In The Translation Of A Popular Computer Text, Angela M. Ferrao
Translating Cyberculture : An Analysis Of American And Brazilian Cultural Differences Evidenced In The Translation Of A Popular Computer Text, Angela M. Ferrao
Theses
This thesis examines the translation of a popular American computer book and its translation into Brazilian Portuguese to determine whether current discourses on computers and technology are being literally translated or culturally adapted for their target audience. The selected text adopts a humorous approach to learning new software applications and replaces complicated technical explanations with culturally-bound examples that are inextricably tied to American attitudes toward technology.
An analysis of the translation reveals that the ideologies and social codes at work in the book threaten to impede the Brazilian reader's understanding due to the translator's failure to adapt the text for …

Memory_Archive_Database V 3.0: Database Culture Is Only Partly A Reflection Of The Rise Of The Internet., Steve Dietz
SWITCH
"Memory_Archive_Database v 3.0" details and discusses the implications of the rising internet database in relation to information, art, and society within the early 2000s. With the internet database, the perpetually updated mass digital archive of information available to the general public. Being as prominent as it is, its holistic effects over the art world has grown tremendously and continues to do so with its expansion into the modern art world. Dietz discusses these implications in length, specifically “database culture” and its effects on new media art as well as different works of new media art which pertain to data archiving. …
The Relationship Between Chinese Character Recognition Strategies And The Success Of Character Memorization For Students Of Mandarin Chinese, Hui-Yen Emmy Chen
The Relationship Between Chinese Character Recognition Strategies And The Success Of Character Memorization For Students Of Mandarin Chinese, Hui-Yen Emmy Chen
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between beginning Chinese language students' character memorization and the strategies they used for the recognition of Chinese characters. In the experiment, a new character teaching approach, the phonetic-ideograph strategy, was introduced to all the subjects during two quarter terms. Subjects participated in the study were divided into two groups depended upon their language backgrounds: the phonographic group and the morphographic group. All the subjects in the phonographic group were English speakers and subjects in the morphographic group were Japanese speakers. All the subjects received the same treatment in the study. …
Ontology Of Organization As System, Joel Slayton
Ontology Of Organization As System, Joel Slayton
SWITCH
Organization is a naturally occurring phenomenon and is often seen in the field of digital media and data. Self organization is under the control of the data itsel, which leads and directs its own ordering. It evolves as more inputs are placed and ultimately forms networks for it to work within. All data has relations with other information.

Interview With Lev Manovich, Inna Razumova
SWITCH
In the interview with Lev Manovich, the author of the book, “Database as a Symbolic Form”, Manovich expands on his assessment of the relationship between narrative and database described in his book, particularly his assertion that the workings of cinema have afforded database the privilege of being the contemporary world’s key form of cultural expression as opposed to the former mechanisms of narratives, traditionally. Advancing the concept of new media changing the nature of the relationship between producers and users of cultural objects by creating a larger overlap between them, the interview leads into a detailed dissection of Manovich’s thoughts …
The Effect Of Using Averaged Versus Custom Real-Ear To Coupler Difference Values In The Desired Sensation Level Approach To Prescribing Hearing Instrument Gain, John Aaron Coverstone
The Effect Of Using Averaged Versus Custom Real-Ear To Coupler Difference Values In The Desired Sensation Level Approach To Prescribing Hearing Instrument Gain, John Aaron Coverstone
Dissertations and Theses
Because there are many variables and much missing information when fitting young children with hearing instruments, it is necessary to rely on prescriptive procedures such as the Desired Sensation Level (DSL) Method to create target 2cc gain values for ordering and fitting hearing instruments. Inherent in creating 2cc targets is a conversion process known as a real-ear to coupler difference (RECD) measurement. The DSL algorithms make allowances for averaged data to be used in lieu of this measurement.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the validity of using averaged real-ear to coupler difference values included in the DSL …
