Déchirures De V. Y. Mudimbe Ou Le Cri Pour Un Renouveau Poétique En Afrique Centrale, Kavwahirehi Kasereka Dec 2000

Déchirures De V. Y. Mudimbe Ou Le Cri Pour Un Renouveau Poétique En Afrique Centrale, Kavwahirehi Kasereka

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

V.Y. Mudimbe's Dechirures (1971) has been widely analyzed. Some critics have emphasized the poet's hermetism or intellectualism; others, his themes; still others attempt to reveal the moral lesson that emerges from his poetry. In this article, by focussing on the meaning of the poet's opening declaration ('I would like to cry out against poems''), by weighing quotations from Jean de la Croix, Rembrandt and Mallarme in the text, and by situating this collection in the context of African literature, the author is seeking to demonstrate that Dechirures can be considered as a manifesto for a postnegritude poetry. This new poet …

Participant Reference In Narrative Discourse: A Comparison Of Three Methodologies, Stephen A. Clark Dec 2000

Participant Reference In Narrative Discourse: A Comparison Of Three Methodologies, Stephen A. Clark

Theses and Dissertations

In recent years several linguists have developed quantitative methods for analyzing and describing how speakers of languages refer to activated participants in narrative discourse. One of the first of these was Talmy Givon, whose method (referred to by some as the Recency/Distance method) measured three factors in participant reference: referential distance, potential interference, and persistence. A few years later, Russell Tomlin proposed an alternative model, which he labeled the Episode/Paragraph method. He felt that Givon's method fails to account for the fact that the thematic paragraphs or "episodes" found in narrative texts largely determine the amount of coding material used. …

The Academic Achievement And Psychological Functioning Of College Students With A Family History Of Alcoholism, Rachel M. Dodd Dec 2000

The Academic Achievement And Psychological Functioning Of College Students With A Family History Of Alcoholism, Rachel M. Dodd

Theses and Dissertations

Fifty adult children of alcoholics (ACAs) and 50 non-ACAs in an undergraduate college student sample were compared on standardized measures of emotional functioning, alcohol consumption, academic achievement, and cognitive ability. A 2 (parental alcoholism status) X 2 (gender) multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was performed on each of the four categories of dependent variables. The MANOVAs were followed by univariate analyses of variance (ANOVAs) to determine which variables contributed to the multivariate effect.

With respect to emotional functioning, differences between ACAs and non-ACAs were found for males but not females. Male ACAs reported significantly more current anxiety and long-standing anxiety …

Functional Projections Of Predicates: Experimental Evidence From Coordinate Structure Processing, Stanley William Dubinsky, Marie Egan, A. Rene Schumauder, Matthew J. Traxler Dec 2000

Functional Projections Of Predicates: Experimental Evidence From Coordinate Structure Processing, Stanley William Dubinsky, Marie Egan, A. Rene Schumauder, Matthew J. Traxler

Faculty Publications

This paper reports the results of six experiments involving an on-line self-paced reading task that examine the processing of coordinate small clause predicate phrases versus coordinated arguments NPs. The results have particular significance for the analysis of small clause complement constructions, and support accounts wherein the small clause complement has an Agr projection associated with it. An adequate explanation of the processing of small clause coordination is shown to motivate a new parsing principle, Coordination Feature-matching, which accounts for the longer reading times observed for the coordination of predicates in small clause complements.

A Genre Study Of Ralph Ellison’S Invisible Man, Marilyn Faye Garrett Dec 2000

A Genre Study Of Ralph Ellison’S Invisible Man, Marilyn Faye Garrett

Theses (Pre-2016)

This study tests the hypothesis that Ralph Ellison's novel, Invisible Man, employs eclectic techniques, and is therefore a complex genre. Accordingly, the assumptions which undergird this investigation embrace notions attendant to folklore, myth and comedy. Testing these assumptions, the study proceeds with the following objectives: (1) , ,to isolate and identify major characteristics found in three genre of the literary canon, and (2) to focus on Jacques Lacan's theory of psychoanalysis and its applicability to the narratology of the novel. Specifically, there are three distinct concepts which shape the study. These are (1) Ellison's use of the blues in his …

Membership At Risk: Representation Of Disability In Popular Counselor Education Textbooks, Nancy A. Rosenau Dec 2000

Membership At Risk: Representation Of Disability In Popular Counselor Education Textbooks, Nancy A. Rosenau

Dissertations

Representations of disability in American culture are saturated with negative images and meanings. Pervasive negativity threatens full societal membership and its related benefits of a sense of belonging, connectedness, and inclusion, and a source of identity, social networks and empowerment for people with disabilities.

Disability pride is a resistant movement that seeks to denaturalize assumptions about the negative experience of disability. The multicultural turn in counseling recognizes that competent practice requires awareness of diverse groups in society. Disability as the largest minority group in the U.S. requires counselor awareness. This study examined the representation of disability in a sample of …

Environment, Cultures, And Social Change On The Great Plains: A History Of Crow Creek Tribal School, Robert W. Galler Jr. Dec 2000

Environment, Cultures, And Social Change On The Great Plains: A History Of Crow Creek Tribal School, Robert W. Galler Jr.

Dissertations

This study explores the socio-cultural history of a school for Native American students on the Crow Creek Sioux Reservation in central South Dakota. The case study places the school's history (1886-present) within the context of the historic interaction between environment, cultures, and social change on the Great Plains.

This work focuses on a Catholic school and the multi-dimensional students and staff who constitute its story. These individuals acted neither as perpetually passive students nor simplistically sinister administrators. Instead, this dissertation broadly explores the challenging nature of intercultural relations that led to the founding of the school and how tribal/Catholic interactions …

Changing English, Linguistic Identity And Elt, John E. Joseph Dec 2000

Changing English, Linguistic Identity And Elt, John E. Joseph

PASAA

A crucial part of knowing a language is knowing how to interpret variation- what it means if someone uses one form rather than another to say the same thing. This paper examines four ongoing changes in spoken English, and what it means to be a user of the old form or the new one. We interpret the identity of the people with whom we speak based upon these minor differences, and we often assess the truth or validity of what they are saying based on our assessment. In this sense, the linguistic identity of speakers cannot be separated from the …

Prognostic Factors For Treatment Outcome In Young Children With Autism, Susannah Grimm Poe Dec 2000

Prognostic Factors For Treatment Outcome In Young Children With Autism, Susannah Grimm Poe

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Over the past decade, systematic applications of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) have proven an effective means of improving the prognosis for many young children with autism. But in every study indicating that a number of participants have experienced good outcomes from these interventions, there remain a sizeable number of participants who have not had the same success. This study was undertaken to examine the differences between the parental rankings for each of eight characteristics across three points in time for children with autism to determine who succeeds with this kind of treatment and who does not. These parental reports were …

Mapping Appalachia, Jennifer Hall Boggess Dec 2000

Mapping Appalachia, Jennifer Hall Boggess

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The complexities of natural and human events that make up the history of a place also create components of its image. Images, even those that are meant to describe limited, specific information, often reveal more than that which they were designed to tell. The maps that have been used in conjunction with traditional notions of landscape painting suggest that there is no single way to understand a place. They also hint of something ineffable but true emerging from their forms. The history of movement of people and natural forces, the arriving and leaving of individuals and cultures change the landscape. …

Concepts Of World Literature, Comparative Literature, And A Proposal, Marián Gálik Dec 2000

Concepts Of World Literature, Comparative Literature, And A Proposal, Marián Gálik

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article, "Concepts of World Literature, Comparative Literature, and a Proposal," Marián Gálik surveys the concept of world literature as it occurs within comparative literature based on Goethe's Weltliteratur. Given its recurrent yet problematic occurrence, he proposes a way in which comparatists can acknowledge and address the problems of the concept of a world literature. The concept is surveyed across various texts and studies and is mapped out in accordance with the ways in which it has been defined and discussed. The picture that emerges is the problem of national delimitations within the context of an international setting. Gálik …

Comparative Literature And The Culture Of The Context, Jan Walsh Hokenson Dec 2000

Comparative Literature And The Culture Of The Context, Jan Walsh Hokenson

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Comparative Literature and the Culture of the Context," Jan Walsh Hokenson poses a series of interrogatives around the question of what, as comparatists, we have learned about "literature in the context of the culture it represents" (Mario J. Valdés). She argues that in theoretical terms, culture has become the new vessel for the old wine of sources and influences, and that global intercultural contexts will change the analytical categories for comparatists in the coming millennium. In Hokenson's opinion, if comparative literature is to survive it must regain the panoptic view, and if it is to thrive as …

Comparative Literature In India, Amiya Dev Dec 2000

Comparative Literature In India, Amiya Dev

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article, "Comparative Literature in India," Amiya Dev bases his discussion on the fact that India has many languages and literatures thus representing an a priori situation and conditions of diversity. He therefore argues that to speak of an Indian literature in the singular is problematic. Nonetheless, Dev also observes that to speak of Indian literature in the plural is equally problematic. Such a characterization, he urges, either overlooks or obscures manifest interrelations and affinities. His article compares the unity and the diversity thesis, and identifies the relationship between Indian commonality and differences as the prime site of comparative …

Comparative Literature In Slovenia, Kristof Jacek Kozak Dec 2000

Comparative Literature In Slovenia, Kristof Jacek Kozak

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article, "Comparative Literature in Slovenia," Kristof Jacek Kozak provides a historical overview of the practice of theory in the discipline of comparative literature in Slovenia. Despite its small size and relative low profile, Slovenia is taken as an exemplar within comparative literature scholarship. Kozak observes that the development of comparative literature in Slovenia may be characterized by an attempt to both arbitrate and mediate between distinct poles. On the one hand, Slovenian scholarship has felt the need to secure or determine itself in accordance with its own interests and concerns. On the other hand, it has recognized the …

Theory, Period Styles, And Comparative Literature As Discipline, Slobodan Sucur Dec 2000

Theory, Period Styles, And Comparative Literature As Discipline, Slobodan Sucur

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article, "Theory, Period Styles, and Comparative Literature as Discipline," Slobodan Sucur attempts to answer the following question: Can a rapprochement be brought about between various, often antagonistic, literary-theoretical views and the concept of comparative literature itself, which requires accord, consensus, agreement, etc., for it to function as a concrete body and discipline? Sucur attempts dealing with this question in three parts of the paper: First, he establishes a relationship/link between the theoretical discord of today (humanism, formalism, deconstruction, etc.) and the high theorizing which began during the Jena-Berlin phase of Romanticism (Shelling, Hegel, F. Schlegel, etc.); secondly, he …

Comparative Literature In The United States, Manuela Mourão Dec 2000

Comparative Literature In The United States, Manuela Mourão

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article, "Comparative Literature in the United States," Manuela Mourão offers a historical overview of the debates about comparative literature as a discipline, from the early years of its institutionalization in the United States until the present. Mourão summarizes the most pointed -- and anxious -- interventions of prominent scholars in the field and she discusses the permanent sense of crisis that has typically been part of the discipline. Further, Mourão links the permanent anxiety of the discipline with the prescriptive tendencies that have continued to endure until the present. She then looks at the debates that followed the …

Comparative Literature And The Ideology Of Metaphor, East And West, Karl S.Y. Kao Dec 2000

Comparative Literature And The Ideology Of Metaphor, East And West, Karl S.Y. Kao

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article, "Comparative Literature and the Ideology of Metaphor, East and West," Karl S.Y. Kao offers a comparative reading of the ideological function of metaphor within Eastern and Western thinking. Nietzsche is recognized as the earliest serious challenger to the concepts of meaning and truth within the West, whilst Derrida and de Man are discussed with respect to their conception that figurality is inherent within -- and integral to -- Western philosophical and literary discourse. Parallel to this conception of conceptuality is the Eastern view of language and literature. Kao notes that the Western opposition between logic and rhetoric …

The Goethean Concept Of World Literature And Comparative Literature, Hendrik Birus Dec 2000

The Goethean Concept Of World Literature And Comparative Literature, Hendrik Birus

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article, "The Goethean Concept of World Literature and Comparative Literature," Hendrik Birus presents a new reading and understanding of Goethe's famous dictum: "National literature does not mean much at present, it is time for the era of world literature and everybody must endeavour to accelerate this epoch" (Eckermann 198, 31 January 1827). According to Birus, this dictum is not to be taken at face value today and argues that Goethe's concept of world literature ought to be understood in the sense that today it is not the replacement of national literatures by world literature we encounter; rather, it …

Interliterariness As A Concept In Comparative Literature, Marián Gálik Dec 2000

Interliterariness As A Concept In Comparative Literature, Marián Gálik

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article, "Interliterariness as a Concept in Comparative Literature," Marián Gálik observes that the concept of interliterariness has a relative short history and limited application owing to geo-political reasons. He traces the history of the concept and cites instances of its use within the Central European scholarship of comparative literature. Dionýz Durišin is identified as the most prominent exponent of the concept and Gálik then locates the question of interliterariness within the context of its potential applications. The concept of interliterariness is defended as both a guiding and unifying principle in so far as it is irreducible, relative, and …
