Notes Toward A Theory Of Dialogue, Grace Deniston-Trochta, Jane Vanderbosch, Ed Check Jan 2000

Notes Toward A Theory Of Dialogue, Grace Deniston-Trochta, Jane Vanderbosch, Ed Check

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Multiple dimensions of dialogue as pedagogical practice are examined in the following three essays. In the first piece, “When Life Imitates Art: Notes on the Nature of Dialogue,” poet and essayist Jane Vanderbosch reflects about the politics of silence and voice in graduate school. She analyzes how power and politics charge the atmosphere of the classroom. In “The Pedagogy of Dialogue: A Relation Between Means and End,“ Grace Deniston-Trochta focuses on self-examining the possibility of dialogue in a large “pit” classroom. She proposes teacher as listener/learner, a teacher who is self-reflective and respectful. In the final essay, “Managing the Silence …

The Write Approach To Mathematics Or How I Found The Middle Way, R. H. Ring Jan 2000

The Write Approach To Mathematics Or How I Found The Middle Way, R. H. Ring

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

Revising a course is a multifaceted process. Often, reform efforts are focused on a particular aspect, that of inquiry-based collaborative learning. This article discusses the implementation of another aspect of the reform of a course for pre-service elementary teachers: the use of journals and writing exercises for evaluation and assessment. The evolution of this particular reform is traced, with emphasis on the reactions of students and faculty, the issues raised by these reactions, and the solution and resolution attained by the author is outlined.

The Scope Of 'High Crimes And Misdemeanors' After The Impeachment Of President Clinton, Neil J. Kinkopf Jan 2000

The Scope Of 'High Crimes And Misdemeanors' After The Impeachment Of President Clinton, Neil J. Kinkopf

Faculty Publications By Year

Constitutional theorists have begun focusing a great deal of attention on constitutionalism outside the judiciary. As Professor Neal Katyal points out in his insightful paper, the impeachment and trial of President Clinton provide an outstanding opportunity to reflect upon the practice of constitutionalism outside the courts. During these episodes, the House of Representatives and the Senate confronted numerous constitutional questions, but rarely resolved them on the basis of an identifiable construction of the Constitution's meaning. There is, however, at least one important question of constitutional interpretation that the House of Representatives must be understood to have resolved: the scope of …

The Power Of Perception And Origin Myth: Reconsidering The Origins Of The Arthurian Legend, Rae Marie Marotta '00 Jan 2000

The Power Of Perception And Origin Myth: Reconsidering The Origins Of The Arthurian Legend, Rae Marie Marotta '00

Honors Projects

Ashe insists that the link between Riothamus and Arthur lies within the writings of Jordanes, a Gothic historian; Gregory of Tours, a Frankish historian; Sidonius Apollinaris, a Gallo-Roman author; and William, author of the Legenda Sancti Groeznovii (Lacy and Ashe 47; Ashe, "Ancient" 310-11; Ashe, Discovery 54-57). In the mid sixth century, Jordanes wrote the Gothic History, where he explained that the Britons answered the Roman Emperor Anthemius' request for aid when confronted with a Gothic threat in Gaul. However," Euric, King of the Visigoths, came against them with an innumerable army, and after a long fight he routed Riotimus, …

Introduction To The Articles Presented By Three Rising Stars In Bankruptcy Scholarship, Samuel Bufford Jan 2000

Introduction To The Articles Presented By Three Rising Stars In Bankruptcy Scholarship, Samuel Bufford

Faculty Scholarship

Bankruptcy law is one of the fundamental legal structures necessary to the functioning of a market economy. In the common law tradition of the United States and England, bankruptcy law dates back to 1542. Bankruptcy law's origins are even more ancient, with roots extending back to at least the Hammaurabi Code and the Law of Moses. In the transition to market economies and Western-style legal systems in Central and Eastern Europe, the development of a viable bankruptcy law is one of the first priorities. This, the United States bankruptcy law that forms the background for this symposium is central to …

A Manager's Guide To Diagnosing Conflict: The 3-D Approach, Suresh Gopalan, David Summers Jan 2000

A Manager's Guide To Diagnosing Conflict: The 3-D Approach, Suresh Gopalan, David Summers

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

Conflict is a natural part of organizational life (e.g., Caudron, 1998; Guttman, 1999; Jameson, 1999; Lippitt, 1982)). Managers struggle daily to effectively manage or resolve conflict (e.g., Cottringer, 1997; Robbins, 1974). As management educators and consultants we found ourselves constantly responding to requests by students and practicing managers for suggestions on how to more effectively deal with conflict. As a response to the many requests, we have developed the 3-D Approach to conflict management and/or resolution. The 3-D approach is based on a framework that enables mangers and students to systematically:

  • diagnose the source, scope and type of conflict
  • describe …

Information Vs. Formation In The Training Of Church Musicians, Quentin Faulkner Jan 2000

Information Vs. Formation In The Training Of Church Musicians, Quentin Faulkner

Glenn Korff School of Music: Faculty Publications

The inexorable erosion of purpose in the formation of United States clergy—which is of course a reflection of the current malaise in US religious life—is both well established and well-documented. An article by Paul Wilkes in The Atlantic Monthly reveals the uneasy situation in US seminaries of all denominational stripes:

The issue of personal spirituality of Protestant clergy has traditionally hardly ever been addressed in seminaries, and has not until recently been considered especially relevant. …faculty appointments are often made on the basis not only of scholarship but also of outlook. Religious beliefs are hardly considered. As for religious practice—attending …

Ancient Traditions, New Interpretations: Compression Resist Textiles In North And Mesoamerica, Virginia Davis Jan 2000

Ancient Traditions, New Interpretations: Compression Resist Textiles In North And Mesoamerica, Virginia Davis

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Anasazi pieces from the Southwest USA, circa 1100 - 1300 AD, are known having compression resist patterning by tieing or stitching. These may possibly show influence from further south. In Mexico, tie and stitch resist is seen in pre-Hispanic indigo dyed brown cotton fragments recovered in the region of Tehuacan, Puebla. The codices are rich in depiction suggesting tie-dye, in particular, the cloak of Nezahualpilli, Lord of Texcoco, Codex Ixtlilxochitl, analyzed by Dr. Patricia Anawalt. Nezahualpilli, means in Nahuatl "blue knot," linguistically reflecting the design in the legitimizing cloak. Codex Mendoza shows tribute to the Aztecs with tie design from …

Conversing With The Cosmos, Linda L. Beeman Jan 2000

Conversing With The Cosmos, Linda L. Beeman

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

This paper focuses on the silk tapestry headcloths woven by Tausug peoples from the Philippine Sulu Archipelago. Called pis siyabet, they captured my attention because they diverge so wildly from the cotton or abaca warp ikat weaving one associates with indigenous peoples from the Philippines and Indonesia. Their material, structure, motif and color fly in the face of local tradition. The dense complexity created by their interlocking square, triangle and diamond motifs suggests cosmic mazes - treasure maps to the unconscious. Pis puzzle us and compel our imaginations.

Some history is in order. The Philippine Archipelago was first peopled …

The Eclectic Model Of Censorship, Kenji Yoshino Jan 2000

The Eclectic Model Of Censorship, Kenji Yoshino

Faculty Articles

In Part I of this review, I elaborate on the parallel stories that can be told about changing conceptions of subjects and speech: stories of error (the classical model's sentimental conception), overcorrection (the Foucaultian model's skeptical conception), and equilibration (the contemporary model's comprehensive conception). I argue that despite postmodern encouragement to view all censorship as arising from norms, the contemporary model has retained a partially sentimental conception (which could also be called a partially skeptical conception) of both subjects and speech as discrete agents of censorship. I call the contemporary model the "eclectic" model of censorship, drawing on the historical …

Chinese Law, Trade And The New Century, Robert C. Berring Jan 2000

Chinese Law, Trade And The New Century, Robert C. Berring

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

China crammed a great deal of political activity into the 20th Century. In the year 1900 the Q'ing Dynasty still ruled the remnants of an ancient empire. The Q'ing conspired with rebels in the Boxer Rebellion in the hopes of expelling all foreigners from Chinese soil and returning to splendid isolation. In the year 2000 China is a superpower balancing communist theory and a capitalist market that is about to join the World Trade Organization. The intervening years saw warlords, democrats, fascists, Marxists and all stripes of communists leading the world's largest nation. As China enters the new millennium of …
