Bottom-Up Design Of Artificial Neural Network For Single-Lead Electrocardiogram Beat And Rhythm Classification, Srikanth Thiagarajan Jan 2000

Bottom-Up Design Of Artificial Neural Network For Single-Lead Electrocardiogram Beat And Rhythm Classification, Srikanth Thiagarajan

Doctoral Dissertations

Performance improvement in computerized Electrocardiogram (ECG) classification is vital to improve reliability in this life-saving technology. The non-linearly overlapping nature of the ECG classification task prevents the statistical and the syntactic procedures from reaching the maximum performance. A new approach, a neural network-based classification scheme, has been implemented in clinical ECG problems with much success. The focus, however, has been on narrow clinical problem domains and the implementations lacked engineering precision. An optimal utilization of frequency information was missing. This dissertation attempts to improve the accuracy of neural network-based single-lead (lead-II) ECG beat and rhythm classification. A bottom-up approach defined …

Approaching Fabrics Through Impressions On Pottery, Penelope B. Drooker Jan 2000

Approaching Fabrics Through Impressions On Pottery, Penelope B. Drooker

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Organic fabrics only rarely survive under archaeological conditions. Particularly in humid temperate or tropical zones, textiles and other fiber perishables rapidly decompose and disappear quite soon after deposition. A few remnants may be found in dry caves or anerobic wet sites, or as charred fragments or metal pseudomorphs, but these represent only a tiny proportion of regional prehistoric fabric production. Fortunately, though, the archaeological record does sometimes yield secondary evidence in the form of impressions on pottery of yam, fabric, and basketry.

Following the theme of this year's TSA symposium, "Approaching Textiles, Varying Viewpoints," this paper focuses on methods and …

Revisiting Kashmir In Spirit, Peter Harris

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Ladies and gentlemen, I stand before you, a fish out of water. I'm not primarily a scholar of textiles, but simply a maker of them, a visual artist working in the medium of tapestry weaving. The Symposium theme, "Approaching Textiles, Varying Viewpoints", is the perfect opportunity for me to point out that the rewarding time I have had studying Kashmir shawl weaving technique, was the result of a unique combination of interests, tapestry weaving and travel to India.

I've been surprised at how little cross-over interest there seems to be among textile artists, for textile history, as if …

Black Image And Identity African-American Art From The Permanent Collection, Daniel A. Siedell Jan 2000

Black Image And Identity African-American Art From The Permanent Collection, Daniel A. Siedell

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

T he presentation of Robert Colescott's groundbreaking solo exhibition, which represented the American Pavilion at the 1997 Venice Biennale, offers a unique opportunity for the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery and Sculpture Garden to display a selection of African-American art from its permanent collection. This exhibition, entitled Black Image and Identity, serves several important purposes. First, it locates Robert Colescott, one of the most important and influential African-American artists of the twentieth century, within the broader historical context of a dynamic and diverse African-American visual arts tradition. Second, it focuses attention on the important influence that Colescott has exerted on younger …

Social Workers: Their Role And Relationship With The People They Serve, Sheila Moriarty Jan 2000

Social Workers: Their Role And Relationship With The People They Serve, Sheila Moriarty

Theses and Graduate Projects

The purpose of this study was to analyze the perceptions that social service workers have of their role and relationship with the people they serve. This study explored these questions of role and relationship through stories told by the social service workers about their work. The literature review reveals that there has been little research looking at the role and relationship with people using the stories of social service workers. Postmodernism and its challenge to the social service worker role as expert is the conceptual framework for this thesis. The research method is hermeneutics. It recognizes the legitimacy of lived …

Pitfalls, Perceptions, Problems, And Possibilities In The Perusal Of Prehistoric Fabrics, Mary Elizabeth King Jan 2000

Pitfalls, Perceptions, Problems, And Possibilities In The Perusal Of Prehistoric Fabrics, Mary Elizabeth King

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Nearly 40 years ago, Anna Gayton wrote a paper entitled, "The Cultural Significance of Peruvian Textiles: Production, Function, Aesthetics for the Kroeber Anthropological Society Papers (1960). Textile studies at that time and earlier had tended to focus on one or more of these three categories when dealing with ethnological textiles, but studies of archaeological textiles were almost entirely descriptions of techniques and designs. While in the past 10 or 15 years, significant advances have been made in the interpretation of ancient fabrics; we still have a long way to go.

What, then, are the approaches that we must now take …

Thai Textiles: The Changing Roles Of Ethnic Textiles In Thailand, Linda Mcintosh Jan 2000

Thai Textiles: The Changing Roles Of Ethnic Textiles In Thailand, Linda Mcintosh

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Thailand is world renown for its luxurious silk. The weft ikat patterned silk produced in northeast Thailand perhaps represents Thai silk in our minds due to the consumption of this type of silk as souvenirs and as tailored clothing fashioned from old ikat tubeskirts sold in the kingdom and abroad. However, the various ethnic groups living in Thailand produce distinctive textiles using a wide array of techniques, motifs, and materials. A weaver combines of various techniques, motifs, colors and materials to create a textile that is a marker of her identity or of the person she intends the textile for. …

Culture-Specific Issues In Feminist Voices: A Comparative Study Of "The Bell Jar" And "Cronica Del Desamor"., Sonia Lagunas Jan 2000

Culture-Specific Issues In Feminist Voices: A Comparative Study Of "The Bell Jar" And "Cronica Del Desamor"., Sonia Lagunas

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis discusses the importance of the cultural elements within a literary text when an analysis of the text is accomplished. Two novels are analyzed in terms of their cultural setting: The Bell Jar , an American novel set in the 1950s written by Sylvia Plath, and Crónica del desamor , a Spanish novel set in the late 1970s, written by Rosa Montero. A cultural analysis of the novels appears necessary in order to develop a more comprehensive understanding of them. At the same time, a cultural analysis based on literary works is a valuable instrument in investigating the cultural …

"The Whole Bible Painted In Our Houses": Visual Narrative And Religious Polemic In Early Lutheran Art, Samuel Torvend Jan 2000

"The Whole Bible Painted In Our Houses": Visual Narrative And Religious Polemic In Early Lutheran Art, Samuel Torvend

Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers

(Excerpt)

In his discussion of the psychodynamics of orality, the Jesuit linguist and philosopher Walter Ong writes that ''the interiorizing force of the oral word relates in a special way to the sacral, to the ultimate concerns of existence. In most religions the spoken word functions integrally in ceremonial and devotional life ... In Christianity, for example, the Bible is read aloud at liturgical services. For God is thought of always as 'speaking' to human beings, not writing to them ... [Indeed] the Hebrew word dabar, which means word, means also event and thus refers directly to the spoken word …

The Metamorphosis Of Jewish Identities In Nineteenth Century Russia, 1801-1894., James Russell Weiss Jan 2000

The Metamorphosis Of Jewish Identities In Nineteenth Century Russia, 1801-1894., James Russell Weiss

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

During the period between the ascension of Tsar Alexander I and Tsar Nicholas II, the Jews of Russia and Russian officials were engaged in a curious partnership. Both parties were concerned with determining the precise definition of Jewishness and how this would change during the course of the nineteenth century. Russian officials, in the main, wanted to refashion the Jews of Russia into Russophiles imbued with Russian mores and education but, on no account, were these "new Jews" to be considered true Russians since God had made them a distinct group from their Slavic neighbors. Being compelled to be a …

'A Perfect Diamond Set In Lead': Henry, Prince Of Wales And The Performance Of Emergent Majesty., Gregory Vaughn Mcnamara

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Early Stuart court culture and the representation of majesty and power have been the subjects of considerable scholarly debate in recent years, yet Henry, Prince of Wales, one of the most significant figures of this dynamic historical period, has remained largely in the margins of scholarship and criticism. The heightened sensitivity to the fusion of power and aesthetics in the representation of early modern majesty that has characterized new historicist and revisionist scholarship has revealed tensions and disruptions within the framework of the court itself. Representational strategies at court operated in the context of social systems, often functioning harmoniously but …
