Do Timing And Pattern Of Myogenesis Correlate With Life History Mode In Anurans?, Matthew T. Smetanick, Rafael O. De Sá, Gary P. Radice

Biology Faculty Publications

The timing and pattern of myogensis varies among anurans that have been studied and the different patterns may provide useful phylogenetic information. Specific myogenic markers have been described (Muntz, 1975; Kielbowna, 1981; Boudjelida & Muntz, 1987; Radice et al., l989) and they can provide information on evolutionary changes for closely related lineages within a clade. For example, we previously compared first appearance of a muscle-specific protein, first twitch of axial muscle, onset of multinucleation within axial myotome, and first heartbeat in two pipid genera (Smetanick, et al., 1999). We found that although the timing of myogensis differed, the sequence of …

Reconstructing Ancient Egyptian Tombs, Hany Farid Dec 2000

Reconstructing Ancient Egyptian Tombs, Hany Farid

Computer Science Technical Reports

From the pyramids of Giza to the tombs of Thebes (modern Luxor), ancient Egypt's glorious history has produced remarkable architecture. Sadly, the nearly four million yearly tourists have taken a heavy toll on many of these ancient structures. Of particular concern are many of the tombs located opposite to Luxor on the western bank of the Nile. Digital reconstruction of these tombs has the potential to help document and preserve these important historical structures. Photographing and reconstruction of these tombs poses new and unique problems that this paper begins to address. Techniques for removing image distortions, recovering 3-D shape, and …

Convenants, Conditions, And Restrictions: Their Influence On Neighborhood Transitions And Quality Of Life, Mark A. Pecchenino Dec 2000

Convenants, Conditions, And Restrictions: Their Influence On Neighborhood Transitions And Quality Of Life, Mark A. Pecchenino

Master's Projects

Today urban planners have many tools at their disposal to develop, nurture and endorse proper planning techniques in both future urban developments and existing neighborhoods. However, when it comes to existing neighborhood code enforcement many planning departments lack proper funding to efficiently enforce code compliance issues in existing neighborhoods. Financial constraints placed on our urban planning departments, coupled with increasing urban sprawl, make code enforcement of existing neighborhoods difficult and time consuming. Today’s big city planners are investing more time on current issues like rapid growth, affordable housing, water, sewage, traffic congestion, and other pressing infrastructure issues. In general, neighborhood …

'Earlibrite' Strawberry, C. K. Chandler, D. E. Legard, David Dunigan, T. E. Crocker, C. A. Sims Dec 2000

'Earlibrite' Strawberry, C. K. Chandler, D. E. Legard, David Dunigan, T. E. Crocker, C. A. Sims

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

There is a need in west central Florida and other winter strawberry (Fragaria xananassa Duchesne) production areas for an early ripening cultivar to replace or be an alternative to 'Sweetcharlie' (Chandleretal., 1997a). 'Sweet Charlie' has benefitted the Florida strawberry industry through its relatively high production of fruit early in the season, when market prices are generally high. But the average fruit size is small, and the texture of its fruit is often soft, making shipment and shelf life of 'Sweet Charlie' problematic. 'Earlibrite' strawberry has produced high early-season (December through February) yields of large, flavorful fruit at the Univ. …

Taking “Stock” Of Pedagogical Content Knowledge In Science Education, Harcharan Pardhan, Alan Wheeler Dec 2000

Taking “Stock” Of Pedagogical Content Knowledge In Science Education, Harcharan Pardhan, Alan Wheeler

Institute for Educational Development, Karachi

This article focuses on efforts of facilitate the development of MEd science students' conceptual understanding of content, pedagogy and pedagogical content knowledge (PCK). A basic premise of the approach taken was that to teach conceptually, students must learn conceptually. A four-step conceptual process was followed with the participants to help them actively construct knowledge about fundamental science concepts and enhance their confidence and enthusiasm for science teaching. Equivalent forms of an assessment instrument entitled the Science Test of Content Knowledge (STOCK), used as per- and post-performance measures, revealed a significant difference. The article describes the structured activities built into the …

Risk Factors And Gender Differentials For Death Among Children Hospitalized With Diarrhoea In Bangladesh, Amal K. Mitra, Mohammad M. Rahman, George J. Fuchs Dec 2000

Risk Factors And Gender Differentials For Death Among Children Hospitalized With Diarrhoea In Bangladesh, Amal K. Mitra, Mohammad M. Rahman, George J. Fuchs

Faculty Publications

To identify risk factors for death among children with diarrhoea, a cohort of 496 children, aged less than 5 years, admitted to the intensive care unit of a diarrhoeal disease hospital in Bangladesh, was studied during November 1992-June 1994, Clinical and laboratory records of children who died and of those who recovered in the hospital were compared, Deaths were significantly higher among those who had altered consciousness, hypoglycaemia, septicaemia, paralytic ileus, toxic colitis, necrotizing enterocolitis, haemolytic-uraemic syndrome, invasive or persistent diarrhoea, dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, and malnutrition, Females experienced a 2-fold higher risk of death than males (p=0.003). Several indices of …

Teachers’ Perceptions Of School Culture In Relation To Job Satisfaction And Commitment, Mayda Bahamonde-Gunnell Dec 2000

Teachers’ Perceptions Of School Culture In Relation To Job Satisfaction And Commitment, Mayda Bahamonde-Gunnell

Dissertations

The concepts of culture and climate have been investigated in the corporate world and have been found to relate to increased job satisfaction and commitment. Schools can also benefit from such findings. In the school setting there are a number of studies that have been conducted relating school culture and climate to student achievement, but few have investigated the relationship of school climate and culture to job commitment and satisfaction.

Organizational culture, employee job satisfaction, an d employee commitment are all variables that must be measured in order to investigate how culture affects the organization. In this study, teachers’ perceptions …

An Exploratory Study Of Michigan Grantmaker Attributes And Competencies, Lisa R. Wyatt Knowlton

Dissertations

Foundation trustees and professional staff are giving greater attention to issues of accountability and return on investment, while voices of those with significant experience in the private sector inquire with increasing frequency and vigor about the organizational performance of foundations. For these reasons there must be renewed attention on the competencies and attributes of grantmaking practitioners. This study is a self-assessment by grantmakers based on the construct of Emotional Intelligence (Goleman, 1995) as well as competency studies in organizational management and leadership.

In association with the Council of Michigan Foundations, grantmakers associated with foundations holding in excess of $1 million …

Quality Of Earnings: An Accounting Model For Analysing Corporate Performance, M S Narasimhan, G Balasubramanian Dec 2000

Quality Of Earnings: An Accounting Model For Analysing Corporate Performance, M S Narasimhan, G Balasubramanian

IIMB Management Review

Strategic planning is the  process of deciding how to commit the firm’s resources across its business activities to create value. It i - cludes decisions on committig resources to new projects as well as improving existing activities The success of strategic planning depends on the extent to which the firm understands itself and the enviro - ment, particularly the industry and the market in which it operates. In the context of selfassessment and the firm’s relative position in the environme t, the ratios of key financial variables help firms gain an insight into their operating performance and financial health. However, …

The Merchant Power Plant: The Future Of Power Generation, Hari Natarajan Dec 2000

The Merchant Power Plant: The Future Of Power Generation, Hari Natarajan

IIMB Management Review

In most countries, till recently, the electrical supply industry (ESI) was either state owned and operated or was heavily regulated. However, with the recognition in the late 70s that this leads to severe misallocation of labour, capital and natural resources, many countries looked to restructure their ESI to introduce competition and allow the entry of the private sector. A typical restructuring exercise involved unbundling of generation, a potentially competitive sector, from transmission and distribution, which are considered to be natural monopolies. An outcome of the restructuring was the evolution of a new entity.

Minimal And Contributing Sequence Determinants Of The Cis-Acting Locus Of Transfer (Clt) Of Streptomycete Plasmid Pij101 Occur Within An Intrinsically Curved Plasmid Region, M. J. Ducote, S. Prakash, G. S. Pettis Dec 2000

Minimal And Contributing Sequence Determinants Of The Cis-Acting Locus Of Transfer (Clt) Of Streptomycete Plasmid Pij101 Occur Within An Intrinsically Curved Plasmid Region, M. J. Ducote, S. Prakash, G. S. Pettis

Faculty Publications

Efficient interbacterial transfer of streptomycete plasmid pIJ101 requires the pIJ101 tra gene, as well as a cis-acting plasmid function known as clt. Here we show that the minimal pIJ101 clt locus consists of a sequence no greater than 54 bp in size that includes essential inverted-repeat and direct-repeat sequences and is located in close proximity to the 3′ end of the korB regulatory gene. Evidence that sequences extending beyond the minimal locus and into the korB open reading frame influence clt transfer function and demonstration that clt-korB sequences are intrinsically curved raise the possibility that higher-order structuring of DNA and …

Simplified Calculation Of The Stability Matrix For Semiclassical Propagation, Sophya Garashchuk, John C. Light Dec 2000

Simplified Calculation Of The Stability Matrix For Semiclassical Propagation, Sophya Garashchuk, John C. Light

Faculty Publications

We present a simple method of calculation of the stability (monodromy) matrix that enters the widely used semiclassical propagator of Herman and Kluk and almost all other semiclassical propagators. The method is based on the unitarity of classical propagation and does not involve any approximations. The number of auxiliary differential equations per trajectory scales linearly rather than quadratically with the system size. Just the first derivatives of the potential surface are needed. The method is illustrated on the collinear H[sub 3] system.

The Art Of Writing Good Regulations, Harold W. Furchtgott-Roth Dec 2000

The Art Of Writing Good Regulations, Harold W. Furchtgott-Roth

Federal Communications Law Journal

In this introduction to the three pieces that follow, Commissioner Harold Furchtgott-Roth proposes his view that the regulation-drafting process relies more on art than science. The Commissioner sets out a four-category sliding scale to evaluate regulations, and lists the most frequently noted problems with FCC-promulgated rules.

The Fcc’S Implementation Of The 1996 Act: Agency Litigation Strategies And Delay, Rebecca Beynon Dec 2000

The Fcc’S Implementation Of The 1996 Act: Agency Litigation Strategies And Delay, Rebecca Beynon

Federal Communications Law Journal

Since it began promulgating rules to implement the local competition provisions of the Telecommunications Act of 1996, the FCC has been under attack in the courts. The road has been a rough one, and the Commission has lost on a good many issues. The Commission has regularly accused its opponents in these legal battles-chiefly the incumbent local exchange carriers-of using litigation to impede the implementation of the 1996 Act’s local competition provisions. As discussed in this Article, if litigation has in fact slowed the introduction of competition in the local exchange markets, the Commission itself must share some of the …

The Fcc’S Financial Qualification Requirements: Economic Evaluation Of A Barrier To Entry For Minority Broadcasters, Yale M. Braunstein Dec 2000

The Fcc’S Financial Qualification Requirements: Economic Evaluation Of A Barrier To Entry For Minority Broadcasters, Yale M. Braunstein

Federal Communications Law Journal

When analyzing issues surrounding minority ownership of media, scholars have often noted that policy discussions in the area suffer from the linked problems of inadequate data and a lack of tools with which to analyze the data that do exist and might be collected. In Issue Three of Volume 51, several authors made this particular observation. To address this problem, This Article shows how one may use economic analysis and a financial model of a "typical" radio broadcaster to quantify the effects of specific policies. Specifically, the Article focuses on barriers to entry imposed by the FCC’s financial qualification requirements …

The Rights Of Common Carriers And The Decision Whether To Be A Common Carrier Or A Non-Regulated Communications Provider, James H. Lister Dec 2000

The Rights Of Common Carriers And The Decision Whether To Be A Common Carrier Or A Non-Regulated Communications Provider, James H. Lister

Federal Communications Law Journal

The decision whether to be a regulated common carrier or a non-regulated communications provider carries with it numerous benefits and burdens that must be weighed. Although one may automatically assume that non-regulation is preferable, that may not always be the case. This Article directly addresses the decision of whether to be a lightly-regulated non-dominant common carrier or a non-regulated private carrier. The Article argues that certain statutory and regulatory rights enjoyed by common carriers are more important than the minimal regulatory burdens associated with non-dominant common carrier regulation.

Universal Service High-Cost Subsidy Reform: Hindering Cable-Telephony And Other Technological Advancements In Rural And Insular Regions, Emily L. Dawson Dec 2000

Universal Service High-Cost Subsidy Reform: Hindering Cable-Telephony And Other Technological Advancements In Rural And Insular Regions, Emily L. Dawson

Federal Communications Law Journal

Universal service is a public policy initiative designed to ensure that all United States citizens receive widespread access to affordable telecommunications services. Customers in high-cost service regions such as rural and insular areas are typically excluded from the latest telecommunications technology. Most large carriers serving these regions prefer to implement technological updates in urban areas where profit margins are higher while allowing the rural infrastructure to deteriorate. The Federal Universal Service Fund currently offers subsidies to telecommunications providers serving high-cost regions, but the FCC has announced efforts to reform the subsidy allocation system that could potentially impede technological advancement in …
