The Administrative Role: A Reflective Essay, Donald R. Taylor Jan 2000

The Administrative Role: A Reflective Essay, Donald R. Taylor

Graduate Research Papers

Like everyone, my experiences, values, and goals are the basis of what has become my philosophy of education. My philosophy of education, in turn, determines my teaching style and together they define what I believe to be the purpose of education. Knowing that philosophies tend toward the idealistic by nature, my idealistic vision is not intimidated by the challenge of administration. The purpose of this reflective paper is to identify characteristics that are essential for a successful principalship. I will also articulate what I believe about each characteristic, provide research findings to support my perspective, and discuss how I might …

The Impact Of Laptop Learning, Curt J. Valentine Jan 2000

The Impact Of Laptop Learning, Curt J. Valentine

Graduate Research Papers

Computers and technology are becoming more commonly used and integrated in the educational environment every day. The problem that school districts are having is providing enough computers for students and staff to use on a regular basis. Trying to give students equal access to computers is what school districts are trying to accomplish. In 1996 Microsoft launched the Anytime, Anywhere Learning program that helped students to gain equal access to computers. This program, as well as others, gave students an opportunity to take their learning to other places. Instead of just learning at school, and keeping the learning inside the …

The Civil War: An Online Unit, Liz Walgamuth Jan 2000

The Civil War: An Online Unit, Liz Walgamuth

Graduate Research Papers

For my final project, I decided to do an online unit for middle school students on the Civil War (Appendix). My reasoning was twofold: I am very interested in online learning and the possibilities that it holds for students, and I saw a need for additional information on this particular subject matter in the middle school where I currently teach. In the social studies department at this particular school lecture and textbook readings are the predominate form of instruction. Because the Civil War is such an interesting topic and there is plenty of information available that includes music, poetry, diary …

A Schooling On Their Implications For Software Engineering [Trends], Ann K. Miller Jan 2000

A Schooling On Their Implications For Software Engineering [Trends], Ann K. Miller

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A discussion is presented on trends in software engineering. This can be done by simply extrapolating some of the popular, current trends. And, in fact, we examine a few of these obvious indicators. However, software engineering has had new approaches that are more revolutionary than evolutionary. In particular, we try to discern trends in software engineering based on trends in delivered software systems.

Establishment Of Big Bluestem And Illinois Bundleflower Mixtures With Imazapic And Imazethapyr, Daniel D. Beran, Robert A. Masters, Roch E. Gaussoin, Fernando Rivas-Pantoja

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Weeds interfere with establishment of native grasses and legumes. A study was conducted to determine the influence of imazapic1 [(±)- 2-[4,5-dihydro-4-methyl-4-(1-methylethyl)-5-oxo-1H-imidazol-2-yl]- 5-methyl-3-pyridinecarboxylic acid] and imazethapyr [2-[4,5-dihydro- 4-methyl -4 - (1- methylethyl) -5 -oxo-1H- imidazol -2 - yl]5- ethyl -3- pyridinecarboxylic acid] on weed control and establishment of ‘Pawnee’ big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii Vitman var. gerardii Vitman) and Illinois bundleflower [Desmanthus illinoensis (Michx.) MacMill.] planted in three binary mixtures of 220:110, 165:165, and 110:220 pure live seed (PLS) m-2. Mixtures were seeded at cropland sites near Clay Center, Mead, and Lincoln, NE. Parasitoids Of The Bean Leaf Beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) Found In Nebraska Soybean Fields, Stephen D. Danielson, James R. Brandle, Laurie Hodges Jan 2000

Parasitoids Of The Bean Leaf Beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) Found In Nebraska Soybean Fields, Stephen D. Danielson, James R. Brandle, Laurie Hodges

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The bean leaf beetle, Cerotoma trifurcata (Forster) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), is the major insect pest of soybean in Nebraska and throughout much of the midwestern United States. Natural enemies of the bean leaf beetle have been reported in other states, but none have been reported in Nebraska. In this study, bean leaf beetle adults were obtained by aspirating those found on soybean plants early in the season and by sweep net once plants were in the V4 stage (approximately 0.33 meter tall). Sampling was done in 1997 and 1998 in soybean fields at the University of Nebraska Agricultural Research and Development …

Awareness Of Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points, Gayle Brosseau Jan 2000

Awareness Of Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points, Gayle Brosseau

Theses

This study was an attempt to identify the awareness of principles of Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) by individuals who completed an eight-hour food handlers' class at Los Angeles Mission College. A six-item questionnaire was distributed to one hundred eighty individuals enrolled in the food handlers' classes during the winter of 1999-2000. One hundred twenty-five questionnaires were returned and tabulated during the spring 2000. Data analysis revealed that there is limited awareness of HACCP principles by trainees. The study, coupled with the literature review, indicates that there is a need for HACCP training. Other research showed a correlation between …

The Evolution Of Internet Interconnections, Sean Butler Jan 2000

The Evolution Of Internet Interconnections, Sean Butler

Theses

In 1995, the NSF officially shut down the NSFNet backbone, thereby ending the nascent Internets early architecture as a single backbone network. Today, the Internet is a group of loosely interconnected networks run by many diverse companies. These interconnections are in no way controlled by any industry or government agency, and are therefore held together only by the market demands of the Internet community. Although the FCC has traditionally maintained a stance of "unregulation" of all information and computer networks, they have increasingly show interest in ensuring the rapid deployment of Internet access. In addition, as more and more critical …

The Causes And Effects Of Job Dissatisfacation Among Emergency Room Nurses, Karen Shuptar Jan 2000

The Causes And Effects Of Job Dissatisfacation Among Emergency Room Nurses, Karen Shuptar

Theses

Statistics point to the fact that there is a nursing shortage. The number of people entering the field of nursing is declining and the number of nurses leaving the field is increasing. According to past studies, one of the reasons nurses are leaving the field is due to job dissatisfaction. This paper focuses on emergency room nurses at Strong Memorial Hospital, in Rochester, New York. The causes of their job dissatisfaction are studied as well as the effect their dissatisfaction has on their nursing careers. The results of this study indicate that emergency department nurses at Strong do not want …

Ethylene Production, Cluster Root Formation, And Localization Of Iron(Iii) Reducing Capacity In Fe Deficient Squash Roots, Brian M. Waters, Dale G. Blevins Jan 2000

Ethylene Production, Cluster Root Formation, And Localization Of Iron(Iii) Reducing Capacity In Fe Deficient Squash Roots, Brian M. Waters, Dale G. Blevins

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Dicots and non-graminaceous monocots have the ability to increase root iron(III) reducing capacity in response to iron (Fe) deficiency stress. In squash (Cucurbita pepo L.) seedlings, Fe(III) reducing capacity was quantified during early vegetative growth. When plants were grown in Fe-free solution, the Fe(III) reducing capacity was greatly elevated, reached peak activity on day 4, then declined through day 6. Root ethylene production exhibited a temporal pattern that closely matched that of Fe(III) reducing capacity through day 6. On the 7th day of Fe deficiency, cluster root morphology developed, which coincided with a sharp increase in the root Fe(III) …
