Fighting Aids With Holistic Weapons: An Integrated Approach, Tom Goodwin Apr 2000

Fighting Aids With Holistic Weapons: An Integrated Approach, Tom Goodwin

Honors Theses

The current AIDS epidemic has changed the way we view the world as well as our society as a whole. Diseases have ravaged humanity since the dawn of time, so what makes AIDS so much different from every other disease encountered by man? One reason is its transmission method. We know that HIV passes from person to person via blood, semen, and vaginal secretions. Most people that suffer from this disease contract it during sex, during intravenous drug use, or during a blood transfusion. Early accounts of HIV disease occurred in minority groups, namely homosexual men. This may have bee …

Anti-Gag Cytolytic T Lymphocytes Specific For An Alternative Translational Reading Frame-Derived Epitope And Resistance Versus Susceptibility To Retrovirus-Induced Murine Aids In F1 Mice, Shawn-Marie Mayrand, Patricia A. Healy, Bruce E. Torbett, William R. Green Apr 2000

Anti-Gag Cytolytic T Lymphocytes Specific For An Alternative Translational Reading Frame-Derived Epitope And Resistance Versus Susceptibility To Retrovirus-Induced Murine Aids In F1 Mice, Shawn-Marie Mayrand, Patricia A. Healy, Bruce E. Torbett, William R. Green

Dartmouth Scholarship

Murine AIDS (MAIDS) develops in susceptible mouse strains after infection with the LP-BM5 murine leukemia virus complex that contains causative defective, and ecotropic helper, retroviruses. We previously demonstrated that the MAIDSresistant H-2d strains BALB/cByJ and C57BL/KsJ generate MHC class I (Kd ) restricted virus-specific CD81 cytolytic T lymphocytes (CTLs) that lyse cells expressing either defective or ecotropic gag proteins. In contrast, the congenic BALB.B and closely related C57BL/6J MAIDS-susceptible H-2b strains were unable to serve as a source of gag-specific CTLs (Schwarz and Green, 1994), suggesting that anti-gag CTLs might provide a basis for resistance to MAIDS. Although its susceptibility …

Univercity News (2000-04-03)

UniverCity News, 1998-2001

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Taking Animal Welfare Seriously: Minimizing Pain And Distress In Research Animals, The Humane Society Of The United States Apr 2000

Taking Animal Welfare Seriously: Minimizing Pain And Distress In Research Animals, The Humane Society Of The United States

ANIMAL RESEARCH

Pain and distress caused by specific research models and techniques raise serious concerns for those in the animal welfare community as well as in the scientific community. Yet good estimates of how much animal pain and/or animal distress is caused by particular techniques or methods are not yet available. The HSUS has compiled a preliminary list of research models and techniques that cause pain and distress. Analyses by the USDA and HSUS indicate that the majority of the animals reported in Column E are used in various testing procedures, with vaccine testing prominent among them. More data are needed to …

Gaps In International Legal Literature, Lyonette Louis-Jacques Apr 2000

Gaps In International Legal Literature, Lyonette Louis-Jacques

Chicago Journal of International Law

Once upon a time in Minnesota, a student approached a neophyte foreign and international law librarian, and asked for legal resources on the rights of gays in the military in Europe. After much searching, the librarian found hardly any publications written on the topic in any language. That challenging (yet wondrous) quest for resources taught the librarian a very important lesson. When little is published on an area of law, it is very difficult to research that area. And if you do find literature to fill such a gap, make a note of it. And then tell the world! I …

How The Host ‘Sees’ Pathogens: Global Gene Expression Responses To Infection, Ian D. Manger, David A. Relman Apr 2000

How The Host ‘Sees’ Pathogens: Global Gene Expression Responses To Infection, Ian D. Manger, David A. Relman

United States Department of Veterans Affairs: Publications

Innate immune responses to pathogens are believed to be patterned and stereotyped. Adaptive responses display variety but in relatively few types of products and with limited numbers of mechanisms. Is this apparent disparity between microbial pathogen diversity and a restricted set of host responses an accurate picture of infection or is it the result of a limited collection of analytic tools? DNA microarray technology permits one to address simple descriptive questions about global gene expression inside cells. In particular, it offers an opportunity to examine the relationship between host and pathogen in much greater detail than has been possible previously. …

Effect Of Chlamydia Trachomatis Infection And Subsequent Tnfa Secretion On Apoptosis In The Murine Genital Tract, Jean-Luc Perfettini, Toni Darville, Gabriel Gachelin, Philippe Souque, Michel Huerre, Alice Dautry-Varsat, David M. Ojcius Apr 2000

Effect Of Chlamydia Trachomatis Infection And Subsequent Tnfa Secretion On Apoptosis In The Murine Genital Tract, Jean-Luc Perfettini, Toni Darville, Gabriel Gachelin, Philippe Souque, Michel Huerre, Alice Dautry-Varsat, David M. Ojcius

All Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Articles

The pathology observed during Chlamydia infection is due initially to localized tissue damage caused by the infection itself, followed by deleterious host inflammatory responses that lead to permanent scarring. We have recently reported that the infection byChlamydia in vitro results in apoptosis of epithelial cells and macrophages and that infected monocytes secrete the proinflammatory cytokine interleukin-1β. At the same time, proinflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) can also trigger apoptosis of susceptible cells. To study the possible relationship between Chlamydia trachomatis infection and apoptosis in vivo, we used the terminal deoxynucleotidyltransferase-mediated dUTP nick end labeling technique to …

Where Is Critical Care Medicine In Today's Undergraduate Medical Curriculum?, Hatem O. Qutub Apr 2000

Where Is Critical Care Medicine In Today's Undergraduate Medical Curriculum?, Hatem O. Qutub

Saudi Medical Journal

Critical Care Medicine is a well-established specialty in developed countries. Medical students have exposure to it at undergraduate level and it is an independent subspecialty at postgraduate level. However, in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Critical Care Medicine is minimally taught under other subject headings in Surgery, Internal Medicine or Anesthesia. This article discusses the need for the inclusion of Critical Care Medicine in the undergraduate curriculum for better integration of basic and clinical sciences on one hand and improvement of the student9s base of knowledge and quality of patient care on the other.

Natural Transfer Of Helminths Of Marine Origin To Freshwater Fishes, With Observations On The Development Of Diphyllobothrium Alascence, Robert L. Rausch, Ann M. Adams Apr 2000

Natural Transfer Of Helminths Of Marine Origin To Freshwater Fishes, With Observations On The Development Of Diphyllobothrium Alascence, Robert L. Rausch, Ann M. Adams

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Infective stages of helminths of 5 species that occur as adults in marine mammals were found in burbot, Lota lota (L.) (Gadidae), from the lower Kuskokwim River (southwestern Alaska): Diphyllobothrium alascense Rausch et Williamson, 1958; Pyramicocephalus phocarum (Fabricius, 1780); Corynosoma strumosum (Rudolphi, 1801); Corynosoma semerme (Forsell, 1904); and Pseudoterranova decipiens (Krabbe, 1878). Some larval stages were obtained also from smelt, Osmerus mordax dentex Steindachner, an anadromous fish important as prey of burbot. Burbot, which are freshwater fish, could become paratenic hosts of those helminths by means of at least three interactions: by consuming marine fishes in brackish waters at river …

Diffusion Problems In Wound Healing And A Scattering Approach To Immune System Interactions, Julia Suzanne Arnold Apr 2000

Diffusion Problems In Wound Healing And A Scattering Approach To Immune System Interactions, Julia Suzanne Arnold

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

A theoretical model for the existence of a Critical Size Defect (CSD) in certain animals is the focus of the majority of this dissertation. Adam [1] recently developed a one-dimensional model of this phenomenon, and chapters I–V address the exist the CSD in a two-dimensional model and a three-dimensional model. The two dimensional (or 1-d circular) model is the more appropriate for a study of CSD's. In that model we assume a circular wound of uniform depth and develop a time-independent form of the diffusion equation relevant to the study of the CSD phenomenon. It transpires that the range of …

Cytokines And The Anorexia Of Infection: Potential Mechanisms And Treatments, Donna O. Mccarthy Apr 2000

Cytokines And The Anorexia Of Infection: Potential Mechanisms And Treatments, Donna O. Mccarthy

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Anorexia during infection is thought to be mediated by immunoregulatory cytokines such as interleukins 1 and 6 and tumor necrosis factor. This article reviews the potential mechanisms of action by which these cytokines are thought to suppress food intake during infection and examines the proposition that blocking of cytokine activity might be one approach to improving food intake of the infected host.
