European Integration: Past, Present, And Future, Martin A. Rogoff Jan 2000

European Integration: Past, Present, And Future, Martin A. Rogoff

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

From its inception in the 1950s until the early 1990s, the European Union (EU) was largely the creation of politicians, jurists, and technical experts. Its effective sphere of operations was confined for the most part to economic matters. The Single European Act, which entered into force in 1987 and called for the completion of the economic integration project by 1992, marked the end of what might be termed the first, or economic, phase of European integration. With the entry into force of the Treaty on European Union (Treaty of Maastricht) in 1993, a second, or political, phase of European integration …

War And Diplomacy In The Age Of Louis Xiv: A Historical Study And Annotated Bibliography Volume Ii, William Anthony Young Jan 2000

War And Diplomacy In The Age Of Louis Xiv: A Historical Study And Annotated Bibliography Volume Ii, William Anthony Young

Theses and Dissertations

In the last forty-five years historians have produced numerous books and articles on European diplomatic relations and military affairs during the era of Louis XIV. However, there exists no up-to-date annotated bibliography listing and describing these works or older, but valuable studies. The latest annotated bibliography to appear regarding early modern history is Hugh Dunthorne and Hamish M. Scott, Early Modern European History c. 1492–1789 (London: Historical Association, 1983) which devotes less than six pages to international relations and warfare. John Roach's A Bibliography of Modern History (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1968) also contains little on war and diplomacy and …

From Hiroshima To Three-Mile-Island: Three Decades Of Nuclear Power Opposition Rhetoric In The United States, Theodore Erik Olds Jan 2000

From Hiroshima To Three-Mile-Island: Three Decades Of Nuclear Power Opposition Rhetoric In The United States, Theodore Erik Olds

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Rhetoric associated with the development of nuclear power in the United States was analyzed over 3-decades in order to better understand the beginnings and constituents of the rhetoric associated with anti-nuclear power perspectives. An amalgamation of existing historical/rhetorical methods utilized by Gamson and Modigliani (1989) and Darsey (1991) were employed. Progressive interpretive anti-nuclear rhetorical packages were identified for corresponding historical periods within the 34-year period. Historical periods were segmented by catalytic events, or incidents important to nuclear power development which also presented opportunities for anti-nuclear power rhetoric. The analysis reveals four individual rhetorical packages: (1) Pandora's Box; (2) Mirage; (3) …

College Radio Curricula: Las Vegas General Manager Views, Brad Leonard Weiss

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Radio continues to prosper in hundreds of different formats, with five radios on average in each American home, and over 10,000 radio stations in the United States. The key variables in the study of radio curriculum would seem to include: the specific classes that professionals believe would help students prepare for the radio industry; the theory/practical blend of course work; and the outside internship and professional programs available for students prior to entering the full-time radio job market; The purpose of this study is to gather and assess radio station general managers' perceptions of the ideal radio curriculum. Since general …

Tainted Perceptions: Liberal-Democracy And American Popular Images Of China, Thomas Laszlo Dorogi Jan 2000

Tainted Perceptions: Liberal-Democracy And American Popular Images Of China, Thomas Laszlo Dorogi

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The primary thesis of this study is that beginning with the pre-Tiananmen Square incident of 1989, American popular and institutional images of China focused on the reformist nature the government, but following the military crackdown in June 1989, this optimism dwindled and resulted in the creation of an ambivalent cross-cultural atmosphere toward the Chinese for the next half decade. When Chinese leaders decided to undertake military exercises in the Taiwan Strait in mid-1995, America's perception of the PRC swung even further in a distinctly negative direction; an event that marked the outset of a three year period during which Chinese …

Agricultural Trade Liberalization And Uneven Development: The Case Of South Korea., Heesun Chung

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Uruguay Round of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), which was concluded in 1993, was the principal global forum to discuss agricultural trade in an extensive way. In this last venue of the GATT, South Korean negotiators had to agree to open the nation's agricultural markets so as to assure manufacturing export access to international markets amidst heightening Pressure from surplus agricultural producers A broad range of economic studies have estimated that as an aftermath of the Uruguay Round, a majority of South Korean farmers, who are comparatively disadvantaged due to small-scale, labor-intensive farming, might be displaced. …

1989 Revolutions In East-Central Europe : A Comparative Analysis, Ruth Rodda Jan 2000

1989 Revolutions In East-Central Europe : A Comparative Analysis, Ruth Rodda

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses

There is a substantial amount of existing literature that focuses on the revolutionary events of 1989 in East-Central Europe. Yet, there are few comparisons which apply a comparative-historical approach to a small set of cases. A large body of existing literature provides the ideal situation for a comparative-historical study. This thesis will test the utility of applying a comparative-historical methodological approach to the events of 1989 in four countries in East-Central Europe. The four countries are paired into two cases. The case of Poland and Hungary is compared with the case of Bulgaria and Romania. A theoretical frame of reference …

School Life On The Mississippi: An Inquiry Into The Impact Of The Louisiana Reform Movement Related To Standards In World History Instruction In Three Secondary School Settings., Michael Joseph Schramm

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of standards on the instruction of world history in three secondary school settings. Contact with the Department of Education of the State of Louisiana found that the implementation of standards had only begun in 1997. After a grace period for implementation, the inaugural testing of the accountability system for these standards occurred in the spring of 2000. Therefore, this study became an exploratory investigation into the use of standards as they impact world history instruction. The first research question was designed to assist the researcher in exploring the influence that …

The Architectural Expression Of Anglican Rituals As Disseminated Through A Photographic Enquiry Of Six Devon Churches, Simon Standing Jan 2000

The Architectural Expression Of Anglican Rituals As Disseminated Through A Photographic Enquiry Of Six Devon Churches, Simon Standing

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

There have been a number of publications that have set out to clarify the relationship between architectural, liturgical and ritual developments within the nineteenth century Anglican church; especially that part of the Victorian Gothic Revival where fundamental developments in architectural design and doctrinal change occurred - 1840 to 1900. A variety of graphic illustrations have supported these texts and as a photographer who has had a long standing interest in visual forms of religious expression, it has raised the question as to whether new meanings of the architectural/ecclesiastical relationship could be established through a photographic-based research investigation. During the MPhil …

The Uses Of History In Struggles For Racial Justice: Colonizing The Past And Managing Memory, Katherine M. Franke Jan 2000

The Uses Of History In Struggles For Racial Justice: Colonizing The Past And Managing Memory, Katherine M. Franke

Faculty Scholarship

In this Commentary, Professor Katherine Franke offers an analysis on Richard Delgado and Jean Stefancic's California's Racial History and Constitutional Rationales for Race-Conscious Decision Making in Higher Education and Rebecca Tsosie's Sacred Obligations: Intercultural Justice and the Discourse of Treaty Rights. These two Articles, she observes, deploy history for the purposes of justifying certain contemporary normative claims on behalf of peoples of color: affirmative action in higher education for Delgado and Stefancic, and sovereignty rights for native peoples in Tsosie's case. Franke explores the manner in which stories of past conquest and discrimination contribute to contemporary conceptions of racial …

Private Order Under Dysfunctional Public Order, John Mcmillan, Christopher Woodruff Jan 2000

Private Order Under Dysfunctional Public Order, John Mcmillan, Christopher Woodruff

Michigan Law Review

Businesspeople need contractual assurance. Most transactions are less straightforward than a cash sale of an easily identifiable item. Buyers need assurance of the quality of what they are purchasing, and sellers need assurance that bills will be paid. The legal system may not always be available to provide contractual assurance - and when the law is dysfunctional, private order might arise in its place. Many developing and transition economies have dysfunctional legal systems, either because the laws do not exist or because the machinery for enforcing them is inadequate. In such countries, bilateral relationships, communal norms, trade associations, or market …

Empirical Insight And Some Thoughts On Future(S) Investigation: Comments On Mark West's 'Private Ordering At The World's First Futures Exchange', A.W. Brian Simpson

Michigan Law Review

Some considerable number of years ago, when I was in Chicago, I had a plan to undertake a general study of the origins of futures markets. They fascinated me for a variety of reasons, one being their bizarre nature: traders meeting together, usually in some form of ring, in order to sell, on a huge scale, quantities of commodities which they neither possess, nor intend to possess, to other traders, who have not the least wish to receive such commodities, and nowhere to put them if they did. At first sight it appears a weird perversion of the institution of …

Becoming Mormon Men: Male Rites Of Passage And The Rise Of Mormonism In Nineteenth-Century America, Bruce R. Lott

Theses and Dissertations

The evidence presented in this thesis supports a view of the first Mormon men as coming from the agrarian majority of early nineteenth-century American farmers and artisans who embraced a set of manly ideals that differed significantly, in many ways, from those embraced by their middle-class contemporaries. These men's life writings attest to boyhood experiences of working alongside their fathers as soon as they were physically able, and subsequently of acting as substitute farmers and breadwinners as well as being put out to work outside the direct supervision of their fathers. Such experiences enabled them to frequently follow in the …

The Role Of Lois Marie Gibbs In The Love Canal Crisis And Its Effect On Federal "Superfund" Legislation, 1973-1981., Daniel Victor Kahler

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In the spring of 1978, a young homemaker named Lois Marie Gibbs discovered that her child was attending an elementary school built on top of a 20,000 ton, toxic chemical dump in Niagara Falls, New York. Out of desperation, she organized her neighbors into the Love Canal Homeowners Association and struggled more than two years for relocation. Opposing the group’s efforts were the chemical manufacturer, Hooker Chemical Corporation, and local, state, and federal government officials who insisted that the leaking toxic chemicals, including dioxin the most toxic chemical known to man, was not the cause of high rates of birth …
